Mission: Wildlife Rescue, Inc.(WRI), founded in 1974 in Palo Alto, California, began with a small group of volunteers dedicated to raising and returning to the wild injured and orphaned local wildlife. Today we have over 160 professionally trained volunteers and staff working 3 shifts per day 365 days a year. More than 2200 birds, mammals, and reptiles from our surrounding communities come through our doors needing help each year. We are proud that we release back to the wild a very high percentage of these animals who could not have survived without our intervention. Additional trained volunteers care for animals in their homes, answer phones to assist local residents with wildlife questions, and speak to groups of children about rescuing wildlife. WRI is a totally independent non-profit entity, and relies on donations and grants for funding.
Programs: Wildlife Rescue's programs include our wildlife clinic which treats and rehabilitates over 2000 injured and orphaned wild animals each year; a Wildlife Hotline to help the public with wildlife problems; educational programs in schools and businesses, including a Wildlife Education Team, which brings educational animals to classrooms to teach about our local wildlife; a Volunteer Program which recruits and provides training in basic and advanced wildlife care to members of the public who would like to volunteer; and an Internship Program for college students providing them with hands-on wildlife experience for their future endeavors in the field of animal care. Since our work involves intimate observations of our local wildlife, we also fulfill our responsibility to the public to monitor the stresses on our environment, such as pollution, poisoning, and abuse and provide data to agencies and organizations, as appropriate.
