Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animals, Environment, Land Resources Conservation, Wildlife Preservation & Protection, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: Wild Love Preserve’s Mission remains steadfast in our efforts to protect and preserve native wild horses in their native environments and nurture the legacy of respective indigenous ecosystems in a collaborative, responsible and sustainable manner with regional engagement and benefit. Wild horses lead the way to cultivating the health and balance of our wild places as an interconnected whole. Kindness, mutual respect, integrity, science and education are paramount.

Results: Viewed as a paradigm project, Wild Love Preserve has pioneered an innovative model in wild horse preservation which has garnered national attention and serves as a pilot for other western states. Wild Love Preserve is located in central Idaho and engages public and private lands. Founded in 2010 by contemporary visual artist, Andrea Maki, the focus of Wild Love Preserve has been in bringing people together in a new light to collectively implement new working solutions which serve to benefit wild horses and the whole. WLP addresses all facets of regional wild horse conservation on home turf in central Idaho, from the 130 Challis, Idaho wild horses they rescued as result of the 2012 Challis Helicopter Roundup, to their collaborative work on the range and creation of a permanently protected wild expanse in the heart of Idaho wild horse country. As a non-profit Wild Love Preserve is funded by donors and grants, and at a government estimated savings of $50,000 per lifetime for each wild horse, WLP programs have saved taxpayers $7.5 million since 2013. Wild Love Preserve’s preservation of this American icon speaks to our greater good and collective well-being by bridging divides and bringing stakeholders together to collaboratively address total range health, sustainable ecosystems, co-existence with all wildlife, and livestock where applicable. Kindness, mutual respect, science and education are cornerstone to Wild Love Preserve’s mission. Wild Love Preserve was able to curtail a proposed 2017 BLM helicopter roundup to instead implement a hay bait trap gather because of our collaborative work with the Challis wild horses since 2010 and continued fluid communications with the BLM and stakeholders. This bait trap gather is in conjunction with the fourth year of our annual Native PZP-1YR collaborative management program with WLP and the Challis BLM. Read more: http://bit.ly/2017-challis-bait-trap. Since 2010, Wild Love founder, Andrea Maki’s, consistent and devoted attention to the plight of wild horses has been amazing to witness. A 30,000-foot view and her obvious political savvy have created an unlikely coalition of ranchers, environmentalists, wild horse advocates, and government agencies, working in delicate concert to save these majestic animal. She should be the envy of any activist looking to make a real impact. -Stone Gossard, Pearl Jam + The Vitalogy Foundation

In the middle of a complex, highly charged emotional and political struggle are the lives of thousands of wild horses, and thousands of acres of wild land. At the heart of that is Wild Love Preserve, working with unflagging commitment to protect the animals and the land in a way that brings people together instead of driving them further apart. I met Andrea Maki at the beginning of her journey, after she had made a promise to a group of captive wild horses that she was going to create a better way. Andrea's fortitude, compassion, dedication and creativity in the face of adversity are charting that course - for the horses, for all of us.

It started simply enough, a few years ago when a mutual Facebook friend requested some donation assistance to help feed some wild horses in Idaho during the winter, I was greatly intrigued and followed the link that was provided and discovered the Wild Love Preserve and it’s founder Andrea Maki.
I can still recall the thrill of seeing wild horses running off in the far away distance driving though Montana for the first time. I’d never seen anything so amazing before! For me it just doesn’t get more wild then seeing free mustang horses running on the open plane.
The believe the importance and magnitude of this Preserve is in excellent hands, it’s mission and founder have my complete trust to insure the solid future for these wild mustangs to remain wild. We all owe them and their ancestors an eternal debt of gratitude for helping to settle our Wild West!
I will continue to give to this critically important cause for our own humanity insuring sustainability with nature and the universe.

As a small non-profit organization in rural Idaho Youth Employment Program has found the need to create partnerships that share our values of hard work and education. Our mission of providing youth an opportunity to learn has been founded on working on public land resource management projects. We provide paying jobs for our youth to teach life skills of responsibility, accountability and team work. This work continues but we are working toward creating programming that will provide additional educational experiences. Working with partners in education and workforce training we are creating programs that result in credentialed job skills and continued education credits.

Youth Employment Program is a partner with Wild Love Preserve as we see the opportunity to engage our youth participants in unique and challenging issues and projects that include the science of the natural resource management field.

Wild Love Preserve's vision of a collaborative and holistic approach to wild horse management along with a large sanctuary home on deeded property has numerous unique opportunities for our youth to be involved and to learn.

As an environmental educator who works with horse owners teaching land management practices, I am excited about Wild Love Preserve because it's not just about holding and confining wild horses. The model proposed is one that looks at the whole native ecosystem and views wild horses as an indigenous, connected component of that system, seeking a balance. Wild Love Preserve offers an opportunity to explore new directions and new ways of managing this ecosystem. I look forward to being a part of the progress.

I found Wild Love Preserve while browsing the internet, and the discovery has been both inspiring and life-changing. I have witnessed what one person can do, watching Andrea Maki bring diverse groups together to find a compassionate and fiscally responsible solution to the question of how to protect and care for our wild horses. When I see people pulling together to protect these intelligent, beautiful animals, who are so vulnerable to our decisions, I am filled with hope for our world. In addition, as business owners (we own and operate hotels and a convention center in Idaho), it is clear that WLP is good business for Idaho. The new preserve will provide countless tourism and educational opportunities to Idaho residents and out-of-state visitors. When one also considers how many millions of dollars taxpayers have saved using this model, it is clear that this is a positive and sustainable solution that should be a model for wild horse management all over the country. Andrea is to be commended for her vision, hard work, and integrity. I'm in - I will support Wild Love Preserve in any ways that I can.

A few months back, I was watching a show where Wild Love Preserve was featured on Outdoor Idaho. It was the first time I had heard about the organization and at that moment, I was in love with Wild Love Preserve! Soon after the airing of that show, I had the privilege of meeting the woman responsible for such a brilliant idea and great organization...Andrea Maki. What an honor to know such a grounded and generous being. Her passion, dedication and love for our wild Mustangs shines through her in every way, especially in the sacrifices she’s made and continues to make each and every day. Her continued efforts never go unnoticed. I’m a huge supporter of Andrea and Wild Love Preserve. I look forward to helping her and the wild mustangs in any way I can. Because of Andrea, these horses get to live the way they’re meant to be...wild and free with their families. Thank you!

Since I've gotten to know Andrea and the work she is doing to preserve a key piece of American, I've been greatly impressed by her deep personal commitment, dedication and passion!

I've made three contributions to support her efforts and drive to unify the various organizations competing for similar funding!

Not only does she bring solid organizational skills to this effort, she adds her fantastic artistic skills as well.

I consider it an honor and privilege to say she's a friend!

I’ve known Andrea Maki for many years and have long been impressed by her resourcefulness and tenacity. She has turned those talents to the mission of her wonderful organization Wild Love Preserve. I’m so impressed by her goal to protect native horses and her ability to bring together the ranchers, the BLM, and environmentalists to do so; working with disparate interests is really the key and its a model that should be used in other places and for other causes. I hope that Wild Love Preserve receives the money it needs to help truly spread the love and save this amazing part of our country’s heritage.

Last month I visited the Wild Love Preserve in Challis, Idaho. I was overwhelmed by the beauty of the area and by the magnificent wild horses. The horses were very gentle as I walked among them. They seemed to thoroughly enjoyed their protected surroundings. The Wild Love Preserve works to save hundreds of horses from annihilation and allows us to appreciate these animals in their natural environment.

I spent many hours growing up around horses but hadn't experienced wild horses. We visited Wild Love Preserve this fall and it was fantastic! I could tell that the horses were so well taken care of and loved! While I thought "wild" meant wild and standoffish, quite a few of these horses were curious about me and let me near them. I fell in love with Twinkle!
Thank you for all of your terrific work bringing this preserve into being and for supporting these beautiful animals.

The story of Wild Horse Preserve has been a heart felt labor of love championed and lead by Earth Spirit volunteers who care for our planet's creatures. All creatures are seen as 'one' with the Planet Earth and the Universe, respected and cared for as family. Andrea is a great and passionate force in this worthy endeavor. She inspires commitment and participation. I have seen no greater active love.

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea Maki, president and founder of WLP, while conducting a verification survey for the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries of this very unique concept of allowing wild horses to remain in their respective herds, roam free over several hundred acres, and engage in all of their natural behaviors without adding to the wild horse population. Touring the sanctuary, it was clear that the horses were healthy and very relaxed, herds separate but also mingling together in a peaceful environment that is safe. Watching them play together or just hanging out in groups was such a calming experience! These horses are from Idaho's wild herds and it was a privilege to see these majestic animals in person and roaming free, a symbol of the wild that so few people are ever able to see and experience.

I have to echo everything that Allen Warren stated about Andrea and Wild Love Preserve. Her dedication in saving America's Iconic Wild Horses and providing a sactuary for them is to be honored. I marvel at everything Andrea has sacrificed in her personal life to achieve this goal and with their very existence being threatened today it is gratifying to know that Wild Love Preserve is helping these Iconic beings from becoming extinct.
I wholly support and endorse Wild Love Preserve and Andrea Maki.

As the founder of one of America's oldest and a fully accredited lifelong equine sanctuary, the Horse Harbor Foundation, I have kept up with the amazing job Andrea has done with Wild Love Preserve for several years now. She has managed to create what I believe is the best possible model for keeping America's wild horses in their native homes by bridging the gap between the BLM, local ranchers and the equine welfare community and getting them all behind her work. The diplomacy required for this monumental task required commitment, dedication and skill possessed by very few. Further, she has demonstrated how properly applied temporary birth control can maintain a free roaming wild herd at a proper population to preserve their range in the face of wide spread misunderstanding of the product and technique involved that has set other wild horse advocates at each others' throats. I strongly endorse Wild Love Preserve and the work Andrea Maki does there. It could well be the only course of action that will truly save America's wild horses from total extinction at a time more and more pressure is being placed upon them by various commercial interests intent on taking away their native and legal habitats. WLP is one of the most unique, innovative and successful ventures into wild horse preservation and deserves the continuing support of not only horse lovers but the general public which is in danger of losing one of our national icons. I have a long history with the Challis herd. I started photographing them on the range in 2004 on a photo assignment. Long after I delivered my photos, I kept going back.
In 2009, I photographed a BLM round up that was particularly brutal.
That horrific experience inspired me and 2 other women to adopt 21 older mares who were destined for long term holding.

A chance encounter with those rescued mares inspired Andrea Maki to get involved. And boy did she get involved! Andrea & Wild Love Preserve have stepped up in a remarkable way for the Challis herd.
I am in awe of what she has been able to do for them, both on and off the range. Her tenacity and hard work is to be admired and supported.
I give what I can financially, and I give thanks every day… I am deeply grateful to WLP for all the work they have done on behalf of these wild ones.
Please help WLP continue their work.

Wild Love Preserve was founded by Andrea Maki to do the practical work of keeping a magical promise to a band of wild horses. Since the early days of WLP, I've been impressed with the way she meets each challenge with integrity and creativity while encouraging everyone she associates with to do the same. WLP projects her strong ethics and inclusiveness as it collaborates with the BLM, local landowners, scientific groups and others.

Andrea is an accomplished visual artist which adds a unique dimension to sharing Wild Love's work with the world. Her photographs of these high desert horses are exceptional and express her connection to both the horses and the landscape.

This organization, with its passionate and committed volunteers, could not more worthy of support of all types.

Challis, Idaho, is a single main street town with 1081 inhabitants, and the county seat of Custer Counter. Set in a valley surrounded by mountains above and the Salmon River nearby, it is the home of the Wild Love Preserve. You wouldn’t realize, nor notice, that the Preserve on US Route 93 is the ranch home for wild horses. Captured on the high plateaus of the surrounding area, they graze on a 400-acre expanse in wind swept solitude.

The ranch, the horses are the wild love of Andrea Maki, the Preserve’s founder. In June, Bonnie Way and I had a chance to walk among the wild horses as they, and we, roamed over the grassy, and sometimes water soaked, fields of the ranch.

It was quite an experience for me because I have never had a good relationship with horses when young. I never developed the skill to ride them. When I tried, I was usually bumped out of the saddle and landed on the ground with a jarring thud. As an adult, I stayed away from them.

Yet, these wild horses were never threatening and had a fascinating appeal to Bonnie and me. They would gallop away as we approached, stop when we stopped. Eventually, as we stood still and watched quietly, they would approach guardedly assessing us from the distance. In time, we met. They would touch and smell our clothes, nibble on our shoulder bags, nudge our hats, and allow us to touch them and rub their necks and manes.

The experience was thrilling, especially after avoiding contact with horses for so many years. Perhaps the wild horses sensed that we were not a threat to them, just as much as we felt safe in their presence. It was also heartwarming, and educational, to experience these wild, beautiful creatures in their surroundings. They have a wonderful place among the agricultural and outdoor pursuits of the people of, and visitors to, Challis. -Janis Rogainis
