Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Services, Animals

Mission: Wild at Heart Horse Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit horse rescue located in Lancaster, CA. We do not support the Kill Pen buyers or auctions. We primarily take in surrendered horses from people that can no longer afford to care for their horses. This way the horses never go to auction and hence do not end up in the kill pen. We consider this a preemptive strike against the kill pens. Our mission is, where possible, to rehabilitate, train and prepare our rescue horses to become the well-loved family members they are meant to be. If a horse can be saved and live without pain, we are willing to do what it takes to make that happen.

Wild at Heart has extremely organized fund raisers that are fun and rewarding to volunteer for. I've volunteered at two of their cowboy bashes and it was a hoot! All of the volunteers are great people and a pleasure to work with! The horses are pretty awesome too

I adopted my baby from this rescue a couple of months ago. Can’t say enough how much love the owner has for her horses. She probably cares more for them than her own kids HA! The place is very clean, the animals are very happy and the volunteers are always smiling.

Trusting in a rescue organization is difficult these days, especially when you’ve not personally been able to go and see the site; the animals, the volunteers and the owner. Donating product and money to this organization fills my heart with overflowing and my mind with confidence.
These precious horses are loved and cared for and treated with human kindness, something you can see in the videos, photos and text messages.
I receive my weekly “Sunday” update about a sweet horse I help to sponsor, from Talin, whom I adore. She is so incredibly personable, funny and dedicated! Makes me feel like “family!”

I went for my first volunteering in May. Prior to my trip, when I was planning to come and was looking for information, the communication from the Sanctuary was promptly quickly & friendly . After that day, I never stopped going on the weekends that I’m available. Unfortunately, living in Orange County it doesn’t allowed me to go as much as I would like to. The work they do there is absolutely amazing; the love and caring to all the lives the’ve been saving and prioritizing the safety for the horses and the volunteers as well. They are the best !!

I found this great horse rescue in December 2022 and have been sponsoring horses since then. Pictured are my “sponsor babies”! The owner always has the horse’s best interests above all else! She treats all the horses as if they were her personal kids! Pickles & River have gone to other locations, so my current sponsor babies are Tristan & Oakley! I can’t wait to see them again!

My sister-in-heart sponsors horses through Wild at Heart Horse Rescue, so I hear about them all the time, as well as see the video’s they send her of the horses she sponsors, as well as the rescue at large. If I had the money to support an animal rescue, this one would be at the top of my list. They care for so many horses, and help many find new homes. They are second to none!

I love Wild at Heart Horse Rescue. A great organization that truly cares about the horses. They work very closely with them, making them the best horse they can be. Then they find loving homes for them! It doesn’t always start out good but by the time they are ready, it’s a happily ever after!

Went to a breakfast event a few months ago. Since then my Daughter started volunteering on Saturdays. They treat her like gold. She used to be leery of horses, but not any more. We recently went to their yearly round up and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. No words are there to describe the work they do to help all these magnificent horses find their forever homes!!

I cannot say enough positive things about Wild at Heart Horse Rescue. The horses they rehome are absolute gems, who deserve a second chance at living their best life. These horses have been discarded, as if they are a ripped pair of sweatpants. Leslie and her team take these horses in and remind them all that they are living beings who deserve love and companionship. I found my perfect riding partner at Wild at Heart!! If I am ever ready to take on the responsibility/privilege of adopting another horse, I will head directly to Wild at Heart!!

Wildathearthorserescue has rescued me in many ways. As a U.S. Navy veteran, my Dr. introduced me to the rescue after relocating to the area. I was able to be myself, pull myself out of depression, complete/end my blood pressure and anxiety medication.

While volunteering 3 days a week by mucking stalls, filling/cleaning water troughs and grooming the horses I am at ease but still mindful I'm moving near a large animal it keeps me in the present. The people treat the horses with respect and adapt to the horse's needs. I've seen horses rehabilitated and adopted.

I support the rescues efforts and being part of the Wild at heart family ❤️ continues to be one of my most memorable and valuable experiences.

I Was looking for a horse and A friend of mine referred this rescue to me. I checked out their website and saw the horse of my dreams. I drove 2.5 hrs to get there, mer the owner Leslie and met the horse I was so in love with. Leslie straight out told me that this horse would not be a good fit for me because of my experience. She then guided me to another horse whom she thought would be a better fit and I instantly fell in love. I appreciated her honesty and realized she wasn’t in the business to make a buck. She truly cares about her horses and who they end up with.

This is an incredible horse rescue. They do an incredible job sharing each horse’s progress from their initial intake, through rehabilitation and finally rehoming.
I love receiving photo updates and love their Instagram updates sharing each horse’s journey.
During some of the hardest years for horses and rescues financially, WAH has continued to provide a safe haven for so many horses in desperate need, while continuing to serve their community as well. Other horse rescues could take a page out of their book, they’re doing it right! They’ve got an incredible team of volunteers, all working hard to rehab, care for, train, prepare and place horses in their right, and forever home.
I’m always amazed at how much they accomplish, and am so glad these horses have a safe place to go while they await their special home and family. Thank you Wild At Heart for all you guys do!

A charity near and dear to my heart. Having a horse growing up this organization brings me such joy knowing the wonderful work they do daily to make sure these horses live out the rest of their lives knowing their loved and cared for as sanctuary horses or horses that are rehabilitated so they can be adopted to bring joy to a forever home. Many of these horses came from poor situations or owner surrender due to hardship. I love being a sponsor for Wild at Heart and knowing just a little bit goes a long way to protect, love and enjoy these beautiful creatures. I highly encourage everyone to be part of the experience by sponsoring, adopting or even volunteering… nothing like a smooch from one of the babies.

Horse trader in disguise as a rescue. In my opinion from experiences. Adoptable horses had undisclosed issues. No home checks. Don't care where they go or end up, just wants the cash for the ones they can flip.

Overly Friendly to your face, I'll give them that. Great place to go if your NOT interested in actually adopting or RELINQUISHING a horse. If that's the case watch out! Seem to nicely take care of the permanent resident horses of "their" personal choosing.

A friend of mine recommended me to this rescue. I had a horse whom I couldn’t care for anymore. I was feeling extremely guilty and heart broken knowing that I had to say goodbye to my best friend. When I met the owner, Leslie, she didn’t ask any questions or made me feel guilty. She reassured me that I could visit my horse anytime and that I’d made the right decision by surrendering my horse. I knew my horse was going to be very well taken care of after I met Leslie and seeing how happy her horses were, how clean her rescue is, and how much she loves her horses. This is the rescue I would surrender a horse to.

I’m a volunteer at Wild At Heart. It is a very welcoming environment and a fun place for adults and kids alike. My Kids, ages 3 to 9 have a really great time there. We get to feed carrots to the horses and sometimes we even wash them. The horses are very gentle and they each have a unique personality. Sometimes they’re even funny. The owner and the volunteers are very friendly and knowledgeable. I feel very safe when I take my kids there. I strongly recommend families to visit them and spend a couple hours in the open space. Can’t wait to go back!

After being cooped up for so long we were looking for something to do outdoors with the kids. We found Wild at Heart Horse Rescue and they were amazing. The owner was so friendly and the place was clean. A long term volunteer gave us a tour and took the time to answer all the questions the kids had. I felt really safe with even my little kids feeding the horses. It was just what they needed. The work they are doing is inspiring and we can’t wait to go back to help/play.

What a wonderful job Leslie and team does with their horses! I recently visited the ranch to look at available horses. While none were a fit at the time, that is the sign of a great horse rescue- there was no pressure to look at horses that were beyond my comfort zone or preference. There was no misrepresentation of horses. It shows that Leslie is dedicated to making lifetime matches where both horse and owner thrive. The horses are incredibly well cared for, the stalls are immaculate and water fresh. I can’t wait to visit again and volunteer my time there.

When I first started volunteering at this rescue, I didn’t know a thing about horses. The owner has been so patient with me and has taught me everything I need to know about horses. I’m not a expert but I know enough to get by. The horses all cherish the owner. It’s as if she’s their God. She takes very good care of them and loves them very much. She will not adopt a horse out to you just to get rid of her horses. If she senses that it’s not the right horse for you, she will definitely let you know. She will hold on to her horses forever until she finds the right home than to give away to just anyone that is willing to pay top dollars.

I have visited this rescue a few times in search of lesson horses. Leslie, who is a very kind and passionate person, showed me several of her awesome horses. They were so kind to let my farm do a 30 trial with three of their horses! So far so good with all three of them. I am very impressed with the rescue and I just about adore them. I am so glad that my mom showed me their Facebook page!! :)

I visited this place once after talking to the trainer who works with the horses at this rescue. I got to try out one of the mustangs they had rescued. I was very impressed with the mustang, but I wasn't ready since it was the first horse I had ridden in a while. The mustang soon found a great home with another adopter. The owner is very sweet and takes excellent care of the horses. She is very knowledgeable. The horses are thoroughly evaluated, rehabilitated, and trained before they are considered adoptable. The owner and trainer make sure that potential adopters are a good match for the horse. I have donated to this rescue a few times already and will continue to follow this rescue. I would adopt from this rescue in the future if and when the timing is right.

Leslie is amazing. She has a true heart of gold. She gives everything to these horses and these horses love her. I have volunteered here and I was amazed at the cleanliness of the grounds and the happiness of the horses. Leslie also helped me with an abandoned horse when I had no where else to turn, and limited space at my own property. Without hesitation she said “sure, we can take her!” The horses at Wild at Heart are lucky to have found such an amazing soft place to rest until their forever homes are found.

I have been volunteering for this rescue for a little over 2 years. This is my happy place. I have not ridden for years, except for occasional guided trail rides when on vacations. Just being here is a release to the tensions and craziness of the world. Helping to care for such amazing animals is rewarding. At first, I was a bit unsure and lacked confidence since it had been almost 40 years since I had my own horse. Under the watchful eye and careful guidance of the owners, I soon gained confidence and even started learning some of the groundwork necessary to help make the rescues adoptable.
Many of the horses arrive sad, neglected, or simply rejected due to no fault of their own. I have witnessed so many transform from underfed and sometimes lame, to beautiful, loving animals ready to be adopted. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty who have passed through because their owners cared enough to want them rehomed when they could not longer care for them. The owners and my fellow volunteers, work diligently to care for all the horses. We clean, muck, and simply love on them all until they are trusting of humans again and ready to find their forever families.

First time I went to volunteer it was the best thing I had done in months. I grabbed a rake and a wheelbarrow and started my day!! The horses were soooo sweet!! I cleaned their stalls and brushed them! They love getting brushed! Finally, the best moment came!! The bags of carrots! So they all stick their heads out the stalls as far as possible!! They love carrots! And let me tell you, hearing them chew is the best sound! They very gently grab the carrots from the palm of your hands! I just love it!!! They thank you from the gracious look in their big eyes!

I had the most wonderful experience adopting our new horse Scout ( previously Spirit) from Leslie and her team. We spent time together getting to know each horse on her property, the amount of care that each and every horse receives is very inspiring and clearly a labor of love.
I spent as much time with Scout prior to adoption as I felt we needed to make our decision, including my young daughter working with the horse with the guidance of our trainer.
I have nothing but positive experiences to share about adopting from Wild At Heart Horse Rescue

I have a friend Isaias that works riding and assess horses when they come in. He called me and told me that they had a mustang there and i need to buy her that she is for me. I went to go look I was impressed with this rescue very clean, waters clean overall i give it a 10. So i bought Sally and i ended up a month later rescuing another mustang Dakota. They go out of there way to make you feel at home. I would rescue from her again if i got another horse both my horses came from a one owner totally broke both of them 15. Last month I took my son to the Wild at Heart Horse Rescue to volunteer some time to take care of horses. He cleaned the stalls, fed the horses carrots, brushed them, hosed them down and had the greatest time doing it. The work they are doing at this rescue, helping these beautiful animals get the love and the care that they need until they can find their forever home is wonderful to see. I love that they allow children to volunteer and help care for these horses. They take horses in all kinds of conditions, no questions asked. Any funding they receive goes straight to caring for these animals and their biggest hope is to find loving homes for them all.

The amount of love and care they give to these horses is absolutely amazing! They are very thorough with their adoption process and don't adopt to just anyone. I came by to adopt a horse and met the owner and the horse, but the owner didn't think I had enough experience to ride such and advanced horse. She said she would let me know when another horse would come that will be a bitter fit.
