I found two wonderful horses through White Bird! They listened to what I was looking for, took time to introduce us to the horses, and worked to prepare them for trailering. Afterwards, they provided support and knowledge while the horses and I got settled. Their facilities are safe, large, and they are so friendly!

I became involved with White Bird following on of their blanket sales in 2021. White Bird not only cares for horses that would otherwise endure a terrible fate, they become a gathering place for the community. The Silent Night open house features free food and entertainment for the community, and the property is beautifully decorated.
White Bird is providing a meaningful place where people of all walks of like not just rescue horses, but build community! Volunteering here has been one of my happiest endeavors.

I am the Co-Founder of White Bird. For nearly 22 years, we have rescued, rehabilitated, rehomed and provided sanctuary for hundreds of horses who found themselves in harm's way. Thanks to the support we receive, these horses have been able to live out the remainder of their lives in safety and dignity, which is the promise we made to them. We are proud of the work we do, but we continue to dream of the day when horse rescues are no longer needed, and every horse has a safe haven.

I am the co-founder of the White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue, so I have been involved in its operations for over 17 years. Throughout this time, we have worked hard to reach at-risk horses, provide high quality care throughout their stay, and to find them homes whenever possible. We network with other rescues to provide the best possible adoption opportunities, and we provide many avenues of engaging the community in the care of deserving equines. We are proud of the work we do, and while in a perfect world, there would be no need for equine rescues, we are grateful for the support that allows us to continue this work, for as along as we are needed.

White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue is run by an amazing group of people. My son was looking for a meaningful project for his Eagle Scout project and WB needed help. They were very organized and thorough, generous and kind, and had volunteers show up to help support the scouts. An amazing organization doing great things for Horses and the kids in the community.

I first met the wonderful folks who run White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue, Tom & Jorg, many years ago. I was looking for a home for a sweet ex-camp horse who had gone through a local low-end auction & was in need of special care. They kindly took in Lily & gave her the love & care she so very much deserved as learned to navigate her world as she gradually lost her sight. They manage the rescue responsibly, assuring every precious soul who comes to them receives whatever they may need.
These folks do rescue the right way, making the best use of the support & donations they receive.

I have known the good folks at White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue for many years. I've worked with several horse rescues over the past 20 years & I have found them to be among the very best at providing for the horses lucky enough to find their way to them!
Many of the horses taken in are afflicted with various levels of vision loss, who require a special environment & handling to keep them safe...which is provided to each & every one of them, along with much love!!
They are definitely deserving of a Gold Star rating!

Working with Tom and Jorge Mayfield at White Bird Appaloosa Rescue center as a volunteer, I can attest to their enormous love and compassion for every horse that is taken in by the rescue center. The welfare of each of the horses in their care is a top priority. Their passion for the comfort and needs of the horses is their main concern. Since many of the horses develop health issues, the food and medication are always handled with meticulous detail to meet the requirements prescribed by the vet. While the health of the horses is of upmost importance, they keep very tight control over how each horse is to be handled by volunteers adhering to the individuality of that particular horseThis allows the horse to feel safe and secure. Each volunteer is kept informed as to all emergency phone numbers and procedures anytime a horse is in distress. Information is regularly provided to all individuals that are involved with the care of the horses. The Mayfield’s are steadfast in their training methods, so all volunteers have the same understanding of the individual needs of the horses. While personalized care and attention is a large part of the training, showing the horses love and compassion is always a prime objective of White Bird.

Great people, Jorg and Tom are. I've been assisting/volunteering with the horse rescue for several years.

I've also volunteered at other local non-profits. The enthusiasm, commitment and care for the animals and volunteers is unmatched.

Volunteer commitments and funding are both in short supply, so if anyone is willing to share time or funds, rest assured it will be going to a good cause.

I’m the farmer next door to the horse rescue. I’ve had the privilege of knowing the Mayfields and the horse rescue over the years. They are extremely passionate about their animals. Ive seen heaven and earth moved for the sake of a crippled meadowlark. Ive been roped into a roadside rescue of a buzzard; and that’s just what they do in their spare time. The horses are well tended and happy… despite tragic backstories. Come and see for yourself, it’s well worth the effort.

Several months ago,I began volunteering at White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue. As an animal lover, I have volunteered many places. This is my first time volunteering with horses. It is a rewarding experience working with these large, magnificent animals. I have learned so much about their personalities and their care. As I gained their trust and respect, I have grown to love these gentle giants. I would like to thank Tom and Jorg for all they do and taking time to answer my question and teaching me.

While Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue continues to be a great resource for our area. They take in horses as long as they have room and will help someone network for other solutions if they don’t. The horses at their facility are allowed to enjoy large pastures whenever possible. They are continually working to maintain a safe environment for all of their horses. I have helped with fundraising for them by holding small events at my farm.

I volunteered to help fund raise for this organization by holding a series of 'obstacle challenges' at my farm. White Bird has shown up at each challenge with useful information on their rescue. they have also helped with some of the set up and clean up of each event either by providing volunteers or coming themselves.
At their facility the horses are well cared for utilizing both pasture and stalled care as needed. each horse is evaluated and cared for as an individual. once a horse is stable and can be evaluated they encourage adoption but want to see the horse and owner be a good match. they have taken in several horses with vision issues up to being completely blind.
As with any horse facility maintenance is ongoing. fences are looked after, stalls are cleaned, pastures are mowed. they have planned the facility with long term goals of being able to have both pasture and their own hay fields; both critical items in horse care.
they draw on the local colleges for additional volunteers which is excellent during the school year but sometimes does leave them a little short in the summer months. not sure how to increase more local volunteer support.

The day I became a volunteer here was one of the best days of my life. I laughed about funny horse experiences, and I learned about what it takes to care for these majestic animals. I had empathy in my heart when going around that first time and reading what these horses have been through, and I am grateful that this rescue was there to help then and now. This rescue shows so much of what it means to be a horse lover, and it teaches you things that you might not have known about these beautiful animals. It allows you to learn about feeding, grooming, and the veterinary requirements of taking care of horses, and it gives you amazing memories while doing so. I remember many times of the horses cuddling up to me and trying to make me laugh with their noses. I truly love coming and volunteering here every week and enjoy the peace and quiet that the rescue offers as well!

My daughter and I volunteer at the rescue and have enjoyed getting to know the property owners and the horses and how to help take care of them. I also donate and my work matches funds. Photos here show the beauty and expanse of the property.

The owners take great care to be sure the horses have appropriate diets, companion horses, and veterinary care. The peacocks, dogs, cat, pigs also add charm to the rescue.

I highly recommend volunteering at and donating to this horse rescue.

I started volunteering at the White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue last August, and it has been something I look forward to doing every week. The rescue is such an amazing endeavor; these horses are getting a second chance at life. A great amount of hard work goes on here, and all the horses are very well taken care of. The love and care Tom and Jorg give the horses is evident. As a high school student interested in veterinary science, I am grateful for the opportunity to help out at White Bird. I have learned a lot about equines. Tom has explained parts of horse anatomy, as well as some of the horses' medical conditions and the medicine they receive because of them. We need more places like White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue in this world.

I currently volunteer on the White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue Farm. As a homeschooling parent, I am always on the lookout for educational and enjoyable activities for my children, and this place definitely hit the mark. From the moment we arrived, it was evident that the owners have genuine love for horses which translated into exceptional care provided to each animal on site. What is unique about this horse rescue is that it provides a safe home for horses who have been abused and injured by previous owners. Our family enjoy the opportunity to know the animals and to help make their short lives a happy one. In conclusion, if you are searching for a horse farm that is not only caring towards its animals but also provides an inclusive family atmosphere perfect for homeschoolers seeking an opportunity to serve, look no further than this Rescue Farm.

White Bird celebrates its 20th year this year, an indicator of careful fiscal governance. Maintaining the level of care during the ups and downs of the economy, is testament to the efforts of our volunteers (our heart and muscle) and the continuing support of our donors and grantees (our blood supply). The average lifespan of any animal rescue is 7years, and that of equine rescues 3years. Financial problems, premise leasing issues, and burn out of principals, being key factors in a rescue's lifespan. White Bird has a secure tenancy, and a secure financial future. All that remains is that the wonderful people supporting us continue to ensure we remain the Great Nonprofit we have always tried to be.

Participating in the running of an equine rescue is very rewarding but can also, at times, be exhausting. Without the help of our unpaid volunteers it would be impossible to maintain the standard of care required for older, often medically challenged, rescued horses. The rescue reaches its 20 year milestone next March, and that underlines the many expressions of support to be found in these reviews. It takes a village to provide the support our horses need, and in 20 years we have easily seen the population of a village pass through the rescue as volunteers, donors, sponsors and adopters. If we deserve the kind words seen across these reviews, it is because these are the supporters that have helped maintain the the caring environment that White Bird provides for its rescued horses. Our pledge is a simple one, that each of our rescued horses will live out the rest of their lives in safety and dignity. I am proud to be a part of White Bird and help to keep that pledge.

I started volunteering for White Bird Appaloosa last winter; this experience has been very humbling for me. Tom showed me around to learn the different jobs that need to be done around the farm. A person who knows nothing about running a farm/nonprofit does not realize the amount of time, energy, love, and compassion it takes to make these very special animals live a beautiful life until the end. Every little girl dreams of having a horse one day. Certainly that was the case for me. The dream of working with horses finally came true when I stumbled across White Bird Appaloosa horse rescue. Having little knowledge of what it takes to volunteer at the rescue, Tom and Jorge lovingly explained and modeled the duties of working in the barns. Their expertise, knowledge, and caring attitude is clearly shown through out the farm. The horses live out the remainder of their lives in the care of the most selfless human beings I have ever met. It was an honor to work with those beautiful creatures seemingly who look so proud and strong are really fragile as if made of glass. They could not ask for a better home then White Bird.

As I write this review, I don't know whether to say I am a volunteer or a donor.
I moved to Virginia a little over a year ago, I found White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue online. I drove up the driveway and asked if I could volunteer. I started a few days later. I am now a routine volunteer, helping several days a week.
As I spend time there feeding and caring for the horses I realized how special Jorg and Tom Mayfield are. They created the rescue almost 20 years ago. They treat every horse with exceptional medical and loving care; this includes blind, feral, old and sick. As I watch the farrier and vet come to the rescue for all the horses' needs; I decided to help monetarily.
Overall, I would say White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue is an exceptional nonprofit for horses, well deserving of volunteer's time and donors support.

This rescue does what few can do—they aim for the highest bar. They don’t cut corners, listen carefully to their vets and even through a tough year with few volunteers due to COVID19 restrictions they have never failed to give each animal the care they need. As a volunteer and recently appointed board member I am repeatedly impressed with the way that Tom and Jorg treat all of the animals in their care, how meticulous they are with those who will adopt an equine and how they maneuver the details of rescue surrendered animals as well. This non-profit has been the most rewarding place to volunteer. The couple that runs the facility is a pair of knowledgeable, kind and friendly people, full of solid horsemanship wisdom in both the care of the animal and the safety of the individual working with them. Each equine is given very individualized care and attention, and volunteers are consistently encouraged to not just move the horses around as needed, but take their time with them and give them a good handler experience. Breaking the ice on a horse trough at six bells on a dark and freezing Virginia winters morning is not necessarily a recommended daily activity. It certainly gives a new meaning to having a dip in the pool. The hard working volunteers at White Horse are happy to commit to this sort of hard work, happy in the knowledge that their efforts provide the brains and brawn that keep upwards of 25 rescue horses stabled, fed and watered.

Whether it be saving and finding a home for a young horse or giving a permanent residence to an older horse unsuited for rehoming, White Bird provide an amazing level of care and support for vulnerable animals. Watching them at work one is struck by the patience and level of commitment of these volunteers and a m delighted to write a review of their charity.d

Tom and Jorg go above and beyond to make sure the facilities are as clean and comfortable as possible for the horses (and other animals) in their care. They are always welcoming and look after their rescues to the highest standard with veterinary care, everyday horsey needs and tailored feed for each horse. I volunteer here whenever I have the time and I'm in the area and just find it a lovely caring place to be.

My daughter and I volunteer here on regular basis. We have both learned so much about caring for aging horses from Tom. Our typical morning consists of watering, feeding, grooming and cleaning up after the horses. Tom makes sires there is no shortage of work and also takes the time to explain the various conditions the horses have. We really enjoy our mornings there!

White Bird Appaloosa Rescue is an organization that other rescues should strive to emulate. They go above and beyond in their daily care of the horses there and they also reach out to help others when in need. They are also transparent in their operation.
I have known Tom and Jorge for over 15 years and am also a professional in the field of equine rescue and retirement as I operate one that has been in existence for 20 years.
We have worked together on several rescues with Jorges leadership and I am happy to say they are a cut above the rest. They have helped save many horses over the years.

I have known Jorge and Tom Mayfield of White Bird Appaloosa Rescue for over 16 years. Their facility is above and beyond one of the best rescues in this country. They never fail to get involved in any situation when the welfare of our equine community is at stake.
They were the recipients of the prestigious Carole Noon Award which is given through the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. This award is given to an individual or sanctuary that embodies the principals and standards of excellence set forth by GFAS. This speaks for itself. Their facility is clean and well run.
I have worked on a professional level with Jorge and Tom on several different occasions and the welfare and safety of the horse is always their main concern. The knowledge, patience and ability to calm a frightened horse and to transport them safely, is some of the best I have ever witnessed. I cannot say enough good about White Bird Appaloosa Rescue and the fine people that run that facility. They are a true blessing to the equine community.

We own 5 horses ourselves, in the Netherlands. Two of them being Appaloosas.
We love nature in general and feel responsible to support as much as we can, offering a better world for all animals. We adopted a few others (rabbits, a cat) who also deserved a better life.
We support different organisations in favour of providing a better environment and lives for animals.
Because of our love for horses, we chose to support White Bird, feeling connected by the way they are helping these wonderful creatures who bring joy into many peoples lives but often are being treates poorly.

This rescue is home to over twenty surrendered horses.
I cannot explain the hard work, responsibility and care that Tom, his wife, Jorg, and the volunteers provide for these horses. After one afternoon, you will realize that this rescue is special. I cannot explain the feeling you get when Tom softly talks to a horse (Amane) and the horse gently nudges him as if to say "I love you" or when he quietly approaches the fence as a blind horse (Jake) knows exactly where he is... made me giggle!
Tom and Jorg are wonderful
people and
this rescue is doing remarkable things.

I've been a donor to White Bird for over two years now. I have loved horses all of my life but have not yet had the opportunity to own one myself, and donating seemed like a good way to express that love. I carefully researched nonprofits and White Bird was clearly the one that best combined love, compassion, and fiscal responsibility. I'm thrilled to know that my contributions are being used wisely to bring the most care and love to these wonderful horses. Thank you, White Bird! Someday, if I can finally own a horse of my own, it will come from here.

I have been volunteering at this rescue for 2 years now and I love this place. To the owners, it’s not just a business; it’s their lives. These horses’ needs are always put first, given the proper time and care to live out the rest of their lives happy. Tom is out every day checking on them and making sure everything is satisfactory.
I do hope this rescue gets more support in the future; it’s a big rescue for so few people to tend to. But the ones who are there tend it with love, and it shows in the horses. Come out if you want to help these beautiful animals, through adoption or volunteering.

I am so glad that I found White Bird several years ago! I was looking for a place where my twins could volunteer and it was perfect, because of their love of animals! Little did I know that White Bird would make such a huge impact on my twins; their compassion and caring for the animals is evident in everything they do. White Bird is the perfect sanctuary for horses both in need of special care and those that just need a temporary home until they are adopted out. Tom and his staff are wonderful people to work with!

Horses are beautiful, majestic creatures that many people dreamof one day owning, only to find out that they are also a lot of work, effort, and expense, at which point the decide to stop providing for them as they once did. Or sometimes people fall upon hard times and truly cannot care for their equine family. Whatever the case may be, Jorg and Tom have poured their hearts and souls into Whitebird in order to offer a safe haven for horses when they most need it. They work tirelessly in all kinds of weather, circumstances, and challenges in order to help the beautiful horses in their care return to health and to know they are loved. I contacted White Bird a few months ago, when I needed somewhere for my horses to go ASAP. Their paddock kept flooding, and their shelter was destroyed in high winds. They had lost weight from not having any grass, and the situation was getting desperate. I contact Jorg and asked for help...fully expecting "we're full, sorry" because that's the answer I'd recieved from every other rescue I contacted. Fortunately that wasn't the case, she had room for one more. She also went above and beyond to find another rescue who had room for my second horse. There was no judgement on her part either. Not only that, but she praised me for making the right decision for my boys. That made a very difficult decision a little bit easier, and meant a lot ! Not only were my horses safe and receiving the proper care which I couldn't provide here, but I get regular updates...which means the world to me :). Jorg and Tom go far above and beyond for all the horses in their care. Most importantly, they love what they do and care very deeply for their rescues and santuary horses. If you're looking to adopt a horse, I highly recommend them...you will be happy you did !

Sincerely,

I found White Bird when I was in the 11th grade. I have loved horses since I was a little girl but we never had the money for one. When I found out there was a horse rescue right down the road from me, I started volunteering. I love working with all of them but there’s 2 that stand out. Casper a blind pony and Billy Joe a brown mare. These 2 hooked my heart and ran. Once I graduate and get my own place I want to adopt them. I love Whitebird because unlike most Rescue they have their rescue down pack, everything brings you in. Mr. and Mrs. Mayfield have been so kind to me and have thaught me so much. I love them for that and I will be with them for a long time. ❤️

They work with and organize volunteers and sponsors to make things better for the wonderful horses at White Bird. Since the goal is to have a good place for these animals, some horses are there temporarily while others will be there permanently. Either way, White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue is a good place, is the right place for horses in need.

When I moved to Virginia almost two years ago my plan was to adopt two horses; which is how I met Jorg and Tom, the wonderful people who have made White Bird what it is today. After spending time there and doing some soul searching I realized that I could do more good by volunteering and working with many horses than by just adopting two. I have been volunteering for a year and a half and I also sponsor two of the horses at the farm. Sponsorship is a program whereby you can contribute fully or partially to the horse of your choice to cover the cost of his/her care. I fully sponsor two horses but I work with many of the horses White Bird has. Often, when the horses are first rescued and brought to White Bird they are sick, malnourished, scared and confused. They may have gone from owner to owner before we get them and often they will just stand in a corner of their paddock facing away from those who come to look. I spend time with these horses, often just standing in the paddock with them with treats in my hand. They start to turn around and look and eventually will come up for a treat. But their eyes tell a story of sadness because they no longer know who to trust. All of us at White Bird work to rebuild that trust and we do it slowly. I often will just stand with a horse and lay my arm over his back. If he walks away that's okay because once they start to learn a gentle touch again they come back. They enjoy being groomed, rubbed and given treats that are consistent with their diet. When they start looking for you and recognize your voice when you call you know they are starting to trust again. This can take a long time or happen quickly; they are all different. We all try to spread the "love" around so all of the horses get attention. Not just the ones who need training. As Jorg says; ideally every horse would have one designated person to call their own. But that just isn't possible.......yet. So I make sure to get around to as many as I can each day I am there so they remember they are loved. Pics of the horses I sponsor CODY: completely blind. From the first moment that I contacted White Bird Appaloosa Rescue the experience has been nothing but great. I was looking for a companion for my older horse. Jorg answered my email the next day. She had a particular horse in mind for me and the following week I made a trip to meet him. What an lovely afternoon my two friends and I spent at White Bird. Jorg spent over two hours with us, first meeting Duncan ( my new buddy ) and then learning the stories of the other horses in the barns. The compassion and love that these animals are shown makes my heart smile. For the horses that are not adoptable there is no better place to live out their lives. For the horses moving onto new homes they will know that people really are kind and caring.
Thanks Tom & Jorg for everything that you do to help these wonderful animals and thanks for letting Duncan be a part of my life.

I first discovered White Bird Appaloosa while reading an article in the newspaper (Richmond). Being a fellow horseman, I immediately contacted Mr. Mayfield with the interest of bringing a few of the teenage boys I work (counsel) with at a local group home. The experience allowed the boys to learn first hand what it takes (cleaning the stalls, grooming, feeding, landscaping, etc) to maintain and care for horses, especially rescue horses, aside from just riding. We look forward to volunteering in the very near future as I find it to be quite therapeutic personally. Mr. & Mrs. Mayfield are simply the Best when it comes to managing facility with such integrity.

Hello, I want to tell you how I got to know about White Bird and my experience with them.
I had to give my two horses up because of family problems and could no longer keep them.
It was so heartbreaking for me, I had them for so long, and I did my homework as to where they would go, I went to White Bird to check on the conditions there before I would give them up. There I found an outstanding rescue. Tom and Jorg were so kind to me and they understood the pain I was going through and the situation I was in. They could have refused to take them but that isn't the way they handle things. So in about a week, I took them there for a wonderful place to live out their life, which they deserved. Also the people that help them, feeding, cleaning stalls and a lot of other things, were outstanding as well. For the rest of my horses lives they had a very good place to live, and I was always allowed to visit them anytime I wanted, which was a great help to me. Now they have passed away, both horses, and I will always thank White Bird Appaloosa Horse Rescue for what they did for me and mostly what they have done for my two horses. The owners of the rescue are outstanding and the way that the horses are treated are so loving. Horses that need a place to go need this rescue, so if you are looking for an outstanding place to send a one time donation or a monthly donation, this is the BEST one. Betty K

These people helped with the rehoming of a 40+ year old blind POA found at a slaughter auction in Montana when another more well known blind animal rescue would not even provide suggestions or recommendations. They have taken him in, rehabbed him to excellent heath and provided for him as well or better then he had been used to when found. All their responsibilities (animals) are well taken care of. Jorg and Tom take this seriously as a business and to be run professionally as a non profit. I would recommend any donation you could afford or help you could provide to them without any reservation. In 2010 my husband rescued an old, blind Appaloosa pony from certain death, from a Montana auction yard. Our long path to finding him a caring home led us to White Bird, 2400 miles away. Tom and Jorg made room for Mr. Bowersox, and since his arrival there, he's become a symbol of faith and hope for all horses, sighted or not. Mr. B and all the other 4-legged residents receive exemplary care, love, and respect from the volunteers and staff, and in my opinion, White Bird is THE example for other sanctuaries to follow. Mr. B has been happily living there for 3-1/2 years; we keep in contact with Tom and Jorg, who kindly send us updates if something significant is happening with him.
