Wheeler created its winter contingency plan, which increases emergency shelter services during inclement weather that leads to increased demand for services. In september 2015, wheeler merged with backstreet missions, inc. This has resulted in additional men's shelter.
substance abuse treatment program. The hebron center program, with facilities in indianapolis and bloomington, addresses the underlying addictions which often press men into homelessness. Those who desire to enter a recovery program begin by working through a pre-entry trial period to determine if they are ready to commit to our long-term residential program. Men follow a strict regimen and demonstrate adherence to our guidelines, completing several benchmarks before moving on to the orientation phase. Once this phase is complete, men move to the hebron center outside bloomington for the heart of the program, which is approximately six months in duration. This 288 acre facility provides class time, homework, peer groups, individual counseling & case management, life skills training & work therapy onsite manufacturing wood pallets, or doing grounds keeping, vehicle maintenance, cleaning or kitchen duty. The final phase takes place back in indianapolis where men work on getting back into the working world. The program is highly structured; holding men to a high level of accountability, yet maintains a caring, compassionate therapeutic environment.
women's shelter program. The center for women and children (cwc) provides an environment that is safe physically, emotionally, and spiritually for homeless women and mothers with children. Hundreds of women and mothers with children enter our doors seeking food, clothing, and safe emergency shelter. These women find their vital needs supplied, but also experience love and compassion, bringing rest to their weary souls. National studies indicate that the fastest growing segment of the homeless population consist of women and mothers with children, making these services offered at the cwc imperative to our community. The average stay at the center is 28 days. During that stay, ladies are provided with counseling, job readiness training, assistance in job procurement, education assessment and tutoring, medical services, addiction counseling, and encouragement to enter one of our long term residential programs. In september 2015, wheeler merged with backstreet missions, inc. This has resulted in additional women's shelter.
