The Westwind Brass ensemble is one of the professional groups in San Diego that has a priority on education as well as performance. Music education is getting shorted more and more every year as school budgets are squeezed. Westwind Brass goes to schools trying to let kids know how wonderful music can be. I have attended their summer clinics for adult amateur musicians, and it was fun as well as helpful for my own music performance. Of course listening to them perform is the most fun!
As a former board member and President of Westwind Brass for many years, I know how widely recognized and appreciated this organization is, and how deserving it is of strong support from all the communities and constituents it serves. Westwind Brass is of the true jewels of the San Diego arts and culture community not only as versatile, dedicated performers, but also as outstanding music educators and purveyors of enormous goodwill that benefit all of San Diego.
Westwind Brass is the sort of arts group every city should have. Their artistry needs no accolades from me -- just take a listen. What is most impressive is their innovation. Few groups of this kind take the time -- or have the expertise -- to adapt all sorts of music to the specifics of their area (in this case, brass quintet). They developed all sorts of new educational programs for San Diego schools, helping children see how learning about music helps them in all sorts of ways, including being linked to math and science! They collaborate with other arts groups to reach out to the community, and keep going in new directions. This is truly one group that stretches your donation dollar, and yields high returns, beyond what you have a right to expect. I am proud to have helped them, even a little, with their accomplishments.
