Mission: Western Lands Project fights the privatization of our public lands. As development encroaches further and further into the open spaces that once characterized the American West, scarce natural resources are made scarcer and threatened habitats shrink. We challenge attempts to privatize our public lands to ensure that the proposed activities are done responsibly, consider public input, include thorough environmental analyses and are within legal limits. Our work involves empowering community groups throughout the U.S. to protect their local ecosystems and communities and to involve themselves effectively in decisions regarding public lands. We work to raise public awareness through the media, launch legal challenges against the agencies or individuals who undervalue our public lands or fail to protect the environment, and work with elected officials for policy reform.
Programs: Scrutinized public land trades, sales, giveaways, and any other attempt to privatize public land, and their impacts on habitat and wildlife, natural resources, land use, and communities. Worked with citizen groups and fellow environmental organizations to disseminate information on public land transactions; provided regulatory and environmental analysis of public land proposals and policies; consulted with land management officials and staff to understand and critique proposals; worked at all levels of government to effect reform and accountability in public land policies and projects.
