The Western Institute for Endangered Language Documentation (WIELD) strives to salvage what remains of the endangered and extinct languages once spoken in North America and elsewhere. Its board members all hold advanced degrees in linguistics from various universities, and most have worked on documenting Indigenous languages of North America during their careers. WIELD currently administers several language projects, including a first-ever Purisimeño Chumash language dictionary. In the past, WIELD has supported original work with the last speaker of the Wappo language and has held classes in Southern Pomo for heritage language learners.
