Wayside Waifs calls itself a nonprofit but they import dogs from shelters from out of state to sell inspite of the fact that the shelters right here in Kansas City are overcrowded. They also sell dogs they know are stolen and refuse to co-operate to return stolen dogs.
One star only because NEGATIVE stars aren't an option. I am as angry as I have ever been. I work closely with a small local rescue, Valentine’s Second Chance Animal Rescue . One of our foster dogs was seized last week by Belton Animal Control and transported to Wayside Waifs. The foster claims AC did not give them another option and demanded they sign a surrender form. Even though the microchip is still registered to the rescue and the director clearly expressed interest in getting the dog back, Wayside murdered him either last night or today because they deemed him dangerous. EVEN THOUGH WE CLEARLY EXPLAINED HE HAS SEVERE KENNEL ANXIETY BUT IS OTHERWISE A VERY SWEET DOG. They did not properly assess his temperament before deciding to murder him. They refused to let us reclaim him yesterday. And today, when we showed up at 8 am to get him, they told us he was already dead and refused to release his body to us. Wayside Waifs is getting away with MURDER and I'm not going to be quiet about it. Do not give them your money. I feel bad for the animals in their care. SHAME ON WAYSIDE WAIFS AND BELTON ANIMAL CONTROL!

I can't thank these people enough for their generosity and professionalism. If you want to see one of the most successful shelters in the USA, with the best outcomes for animals, and an amazing rehabilitation program, take a tour here. They're amazing, they raise the bar, they show you how it's done right. They keep dogs separate from cats. Cats have a nice set up for play and activity to meet people, they're not all jammed in little kennels and really scared by the time someone opens the cage. They take turns in the kitty rooms as long as they're healthy.
The dogs all get walks several times a day. They have big areas to run outside or in different play rooms. You can meet animals in an intimate setting. I adopted a senior dog here and he will always have a special place in my heart, always. He had a lot of issues and wouldn't stand a chance at other rescues. But wayside paid for $1,000 worth of medical expenses while he was in their care.
You won't smell poop or pee when you visit this place.
Volunteers undergo training classes, with many options available and lots to learn before you get started.
Employees are paid and able to do their job and take it very seriously.
