WARNING!!!!
TO ALL INCOMING VISITORS,
You will have to wait in line until it opens. Meaning, if You show up 3-4 hours prior. You can no longer hold your spot in line. (like using a chair or what have you) You will have to wait outside in line until it opens. (the time of post this review, the temperature is 35 degrees or maybe colder) Risking your health for food.
The day I visited it was 35 degrees, my mom and I woke up at 4:30 am to arrive at wayforward location in Middleton at 5am where the pantry opens at 10 am just so we could have a good spot in line (5 Hour wait). We place our chairs in line just like everyone else, just like every other time. While waiting inside my car, just to find out at 8am that our chairs were taken inside the building. I was confused because the same people that were ahead of us were sitting in their chairs, directing that the staff taken our chairs inside the building and that we would have to go all the way to the end of the line, which at that point, people were laughing at us and there were around 30 - 40 people in line, even after waiting 3-4 hours already.
The reason I'm posting this review is that. Even if we were to go back to the end of the line, which is cruel and unusual, it's 35 degrees outside! It's very cold, to be waiting in line for hours. My mom has health conditions which is why I take care of her. So, to be outside that long in the cold. I don't think that's humane and I feel as though people are risking their health for food, (a monitory gain) the same people who are impoverished and struggling to make ends meet. Who really benefits from this new policy? Not good. The loss of morality

I have been volunteering with WayForward resources for the past three years working in the senior scheduling department. I’ve also worked on the winter wishes fundraiser, in the food pantry and on the back pack drive. I have found the people at Way forward are some of the most kind and compassionate people I have ever met. They work endlessly towards their mission to provide food and housing security for those in need in our community. Covid has increased WayForward’s challenges but they adapted and responded quickly with solutions to meet their clients needs.

I am very thankful I have the opportunity to work with such a caring and professional organization. They go 110% to make our community better. Therefore, because of this wonderful dedication and commitment to our community, when I select organizations to donate to each year, Wayforward is #1 on my list.

I started volunteering with WayForward (previously MOM) working on the weekend backpack assembly line and assisted in the Thanksgiving meal basket distribution. As a volunteer, I gained firsthand insight into WayForward's mission and impact, deepening my passion for the cause. After witnessing firsthand the needs of our community, I joined the Resource Development Committee (RDC). The RDC’s main focus is helping to secure vital resources and support to sustain and expand WayForward's initiatives. It's a chance to help my community, build lasting relationships, and shape the organization's future. WayForward is creating a brighter and more resilient community, and I am proud to play a small part.

I've been volunteering at WayForward (formerly Middleton Outreach Ministry - MOM) for a couple of years now. I am not one of their amazing regular volunteers, but I show up when they need extra help for events and such. They are always very welcoming, regardless of my irregularity. I love how focused they are on meeting the broad-ranging needs of the community, and how they manage to stay on top of those evolving needs. WayForward also seems to attract really wonderful people to volunteer. It's really humbling to see how many people are willing - anxious even - to give of their time and themselves to serve those with needs in our area.

I’ve been witnessing the work that WayForward has done for many years and finally had the opportunity to work on the back to school backpack program this fall. I’d been to the Holiday Art Fair a few times and saw the work they were doing, but this was next level. The passion of the organization was on full display. It was a great experience and I will not hesitate to volunteer again.

Our company provided 35 kindergarten backpacks for the back-to-school event in 2023 and are looking forward to supporting them in future years. Way Forward provides much needed resources to families in our area, thank you for all you do!

I am originally from the UK, but as a child I received free school lunches, uniform, etc. As a family we received about 40 GBP per week in "benefits" to use for food, heat, transport, and anything else needed. That is approximately what it ended up costing for these backpacks including supplies. Having this extra cost burden can mean the difference between families going without heat or food and being able to send their kids to school with backpacks ready for the school year.

There is a lot of drive in our community to support one another, so thank you Way Forward for facilitating this.

I was raised by my parents to always try and help those in need. Loss of a job, a home, a spouse or a loved one was a call to help. Quite often this also meant helping with food to get them through the tough times. We in the WayForward Resources service area are fortunate to have this organization help funnel resources from those of us in the neighborhoods to those in need of food, clothing and housing support. As a volunteer and contributor to WayForward Resources now and for the many years under the name of Middleton Outreach Ministry I have seen the unbelievable way this group has been able to withstand huge increases in demand and carryon it's mission of providing food even during Covid. With its dedicated staff and volunteers, it has been inventive in addressing roadblocks to provide service and continues to move forward in even more ways to help those facing issues with access to food and housing. Helping those in need is what good neighbors do. It helps build community. It can give you a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Most importantly it's the right thing to do.

I became involved at MOM over 5 years ago through work. We have a team of volunteers that volunteers weekly in the food pantry. We have expanded our involvement and regularly participate in other events throughout the year - Back to School, Winter Wishes, various drives for needed goods (like laundry detergent, or hats/mittens/scarves). We love supporting these programs that help individuals in our community. Coronavirus has hit segments of our community hard (those who work in restaurants, concert halls, theatre venues, etc). Without the support of MOM, it would be hard for some to feed their family or get school supplies. MOM is an awesome organization and does so much for our community!

For a number of years my family has participated in the Sharing Christmas program, and it is one of the most rewarding things we've done! The program is extremely well organized, and providing something meaningful for families who need a little extra help during the holidays is part of the true spirit of the holiday season. In fact, we now give to families in the names of our family members as a "gift" to our family members, and they, too, say it has been one of the most meaningful gifts they've received. I highly recommend this program, in addition to the amazing work MOM does to help people on the west side of Madison, Middleton, and Cross Plains.

Middleton Outreach Ministry (MOM) has many wonderful programs that benefit their community, and they make a tremendous positive impact on the families they serve. Over the years, I have contributed to M.O.M. as both a donor and a volunteer consultant and I continue to be amazed at how well-managed and effective this organization is.
The board and management are all quite prescient and responsive, and have always strived to keep the organization agile and attentive to the specific needs of the community.

The Executive Director in particular, Ellen Carlson, is such a vibrant and uplifting voice in the community. You can tell how much she values and appreciates her staff and volunteers by how she enthusiastically raves about them and their accomplishments and contributions to MOM's success.
It speaks volumes about the organization when leadership is so complimentary of the people that make things happen and so focused on the changing needs of the communities it serves.

As an effective, efficient organization making a quantifiable impact through its services, I wholeheartedly recommend M.O.M. as a top-notch charity to both donors and volunteers.

This would include health care needs, grocery shopping, banking needs, Post Office, library, beauty salons, senior centers to mention a few. The clients are always so thankful for the help with their transportation needs. This program is so valuable, because the majority of our clients don't have the means to pay for cabs or other forms of transportation services. All this at no cost to them! I've been a MOM volunteer since February 2005. It's really been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I do data entry in the main office, so I don't interact directly with the clients very often; I mostly work with the staff and other volunteers. By doing data entry, I've learned about the many programs that MOM has in place to help clients.

I think it's important to help people in need, especially during the current pandemic. And MOM is there to help with food, or financial assistance for housing, or whatever is needed. I think MOM makes our community stronger and a better place to live. I'm happy to contribute to our community by volunteering at MOM.

I moved to the Madison area 4 years ago. Having volunteered in the past, I was looking for an organization to be a part of . I got so many recommendations from my family that was already down here to check out MOMS, where they had all been involved. It was an amazing experience from my interview to the training, and actual volunteering. I worked the front desk, individual events(back to school, Craft Fair, Art Fair), but best was working directly with the clients in the Food Pantry. I have met so many wonderful people and heard stories of lives I could not begin to imagine. They have given me so much more than I could ever give them. I look forward to seeing clients week after week. MOMS provides support with respect and dignity, no judgement, only care. The case managers are so patient and sensitive with those they meet with, doing everything they can to meet their needs. I am thankful to be a part of such a worthwhile organization.

I have been a volunteer with MOM for a couple of years now and have consistently found the organization to be highly effective in accomplishing its mission. I volunteer in the food pantry (and have donated as well), so my experience has been helping feed people who might otherwise go hungry. This has continued during the pandemic with MOM designing a food delivery program that protects clients, volunteers, and staff alike.
The staff at MOM are strong, dedicated, and caring people. They have done an excellent job of organizing and running the pantry, especially during these challenging covid times. One of the measures of MOM's effectiveness is the pantry's sizable numbers of volunteers. The fact that there are so many of us, and that many have been volunteering for years speaks volumes about how well run MOM is. Volunteers don't tend to stay where they don't feel their efforts are making a difference. I say all this having spent a career of several decades working in the non-profit world. I understand the difference between impactful organizations and those that are not. MOM is without question one of the impactful ones.

The importance of getting rides to appointments, shopping at the food pantry or clothing center or getting help with yard work or assembly of a piece of furniture has become very obvious to me. I feel I'm part of something that is making a huge difference in the lives of many. MOM rocks!!

I started volunteering at MOM at the first of this year. I had moved from Chicago and was looking for a new volunteering home. The process to begin volunteering was easy and I felt immediately welcome to the group. I was well trained to work as a Client Host to help clients pick their food allotment in a pantry setup store. This experience as if in a real store getting to pick their own food gives respect and dignity to clients. It was nice to see many regular volunteers and the close interactions they had with the clients. The clients seemed to brighten each time they were engaged in conversation. Of course no conversation of 2020 would be complete without a discussion of the reactions around COVID. MOM was quick to move to a safer interaction method for volunteers and clients to distribute food. The rapid change resulted in just trying to get any food out we could. This resulted in a fixed distribution of items - no choices. It was a reasonable change but clients were still dismayed at the lack of customizations or the items missing they were used to getting. As the new distribution process became ironed out, MOM constantly found ways to include more and more options for clients. Clients seem much happier having that choice back. I think going that extra mile to give clients that freedom again in this environment is amazing.

MOM has continually evolved to meet the needs of clients in the last 10 years that I have volunteered here. Those who come here for help feel valued and respected by client hosts and the professionals who work here. Volunteers are also well trained and nurtured in their roles. Many of my fellow volunteers have been helping out at the pantry for 10 or more years and have gotten to know the clients and their family members on a first name basis. That commitment is a direct result of the positive, respectful environment found here. Clients who have received services at other locations often tell us how much they appreciate the warm welcome they get here. We also receive tremendous support from the Middleton/Cross Plains communities but the needs continue to grow

I first came into contact with MOM 18 years ago. I was in a bad place financially, mentally and emotionally. Financially, MOM helped me find housing, helped with my security deposit, provided me with food from the food pantry. But MOM helped me with something that lasted much longer than the apartment, the security deposit or the food. MOM helped me find my self-respect again. They helped me find the courage to leave an unhealthy relationship and find my independence, but most of all they gave me hope. Nearly 2 decades later, I am a successful professional. I own my own home and have raised two amazing daughters. I owe all of my success to MOM; had they not been there with a helping hand when I needed it most who knows where I would be now. When you work with MOM you're not just a number, you are treated with dignity and respect and are not made to feel as if you are less than. Any time I encounter somebody in the community who is struggling I make sure to tell them about MOM and their services.

I became involved with MOM approximately six years ago as a front desk volunteer. I'd heard very positive comments about this organization, and felt it would give me some perspective on challenges faced by those less fortunate. It was immediately apparent the people who direct MOM are totally committed to helping people in need.

Clients are treated with respect and kindness, no matter what the situation is. The actions of the MOM team help them keep their dignity. Every effort is made to support the clients whether it be food, clothing, housing, providing rides for seniors or other basic needs. The Case Managers are familiar with community services and help clients find affordable housing or work with utility companies when they fall behind in their payments.

It still amazes me how much is accomplished by a small MOM staff, its Board of Directors and hundreds of volunteers who want to provide help anywhere it's needed. I'm honored to be both a volunteer and donor to this amazing organization.

I have had the privilege of working with the MOM team in strategy work and more recently as a member of the Finance Committee that supports MOM's ED and Board. The mission of MOM is complex and diverse and challenging in many ways. The MOM Team under the leadership of the former ED Al Ripp and the current ED Ellen Carlson has always impressed me with their deep commitment, caring focus, and unbelievable passion for the families of our community. The client needs are addressed at a human level, while the long term community and Organizational needs are well cared for at their larger levels. The MOM team is exceptionally adept at balancing these often opposing perspectives. Additionally, I love how deeply integrated MOM is in our community...local events, community, volunteerism, and public-private make MOM a resource of Middleton as a whole community, not just a service for those in need. I believe you can tell the health of an organization by how easily they attract volunteers, how effectively they use them, and how happy the volunteers are and the reviews of the customers for the non-profit with their services. Middleton Outreach Ministry excels on all of these dimensions. They are an effective organization offering food, clothing and shelter to those in need and homeless. They have many volunteers and people enjoy working there. Their time is well used, and volunteers feel valued. I have worked in the clothing closet where you sort clothing that is donated and hang the good pieces out. Clients may choose what they need. All clients are greeted with warmth and care - and appreciate the clothing. The women who staff this area are retired retail managers, so they have created a wonderful "shopping experience" for those in need.
I also work on the Holiday Art Fair, where the event not only supports those in need but gives a way for local artists to contribute to the community. Middleton Outreach Ministry is an excellent example of a non-profit that has real outcomes and a vibrant volunteer community and has distributed million lbs of food last year.

I have worn several hats in my history with the Middleton Outreach Ministry. As a member of the Middleton Common Council, I was amazed at the involvement of MOM in the community. They were of critical assistance to many constituents since I represented a district with a great deal of multi unit housing. They could always be counted on to follow up with addressing the needs of people referred to them. Perhaps my most important hat was as someone who needed their services when I lost my job at the State Capitol and saw my income drop drastically. They provided renters assistance and that made a real difference in paying my rent. I do need to give a special shout out to MOM's Laurie Horton who made an exceptional effort to help me during these trying times. I learned first hand of the value of their amazing service. Finally, my third hat is now as a member of an organization that works hand in hand with MOM to provide food and other assistance for those in need. Our Middleton Action Team holds numerous food drives on MOM's behalf and we also hold a monthly food distribution at the Voss Haus, an apartment complex serving people with low incomes and disabilities.

I can't say enough about the positive way that MOM is changing lives for the better in the Middleton area. They represent the best in us all.

There are many worthy Nonprofit organizations doing great things. M.O.M. is a standout to me for several reasons.
1. The staff is innovative and works to bring dignity to the experience of those utilizing services and have made it unified by offering food, clothing and housing assistance in one place. In addition, interesting and unique fundraisers brings community together, giving emotional support to all.
2. As a new volunteer, I am impressed with the sincere dedication of veteran volunteers, many who are devoting their retirement to the mission of M.O.M. It gives me incentive and drive to participate.
3. My experience particularly stocking the food pantry and in the community teaching garden has shown me that M.O.M. leadership, both staff and volunteer, is interested in building programs that provide individuals with skills that will empower them to independence, while bringing quality, dignified experiences. The food pantry operates similarly to a grocery store, replicating real life food experiences. There are tastings and fresh produce gleaned by many former UW Madision agronomists and Ag researchers who know high nutritious produce picked often from farm to pantry within hours. I helped glean some apples and pears that were directly placed in the pantry for pantry participants to have that very day. It doesn't get much fresher or higher in nutrition than that!! What a great program!!!
