Mission: The watts house project (whp) is a collaborative artwork in the shape of a neighborhood redevelopment, centered on east 107th street across from the historic watts towers in los angeles. Whp is committed to working with residents of 107th street, and eventually beyond, to preserve the character of the neighborhood, bring the revitalizing effects of art and arts education to the neighborhood, and help the community improve their public and private spaces. Whp engages in arts-based programming as well as home improvements.
Programs: Platform: whp worked with huum architects, artplace grants organization, usc architecture school students, and whp artist in residence, genaro alvarez to advance the designs for the platform. Whp completed construction of the artist in residence home at the back of the platform property and moved genaro alvarez and his family into the residence. Whp also moved genaro's welding studio to the platform property, enabling him to launch his creative welding business. Whp paid for genaro's training as a welder in 2010 and 2011.
virtual redevelopment program: the virtual redevelopment program brings architects and artists together with watts familiy members to create lighting, landscaping, fences, benches and other exterior home improvements to the neighborhood homes. Whp implemented significant exterior improvements and landscaping designs in 3 families' homes under the vrd program.
house renovations: whp completed interior and exterior renovations on the garcia house. The team also completed fundraising and development plans for the love house.
