Causes: Education, Parent & Teacher Groups
Mission: In 1930, Mrs. A.H. Gould of Seattle gave $500 to the Washington State PTA to start a program encouraging high school graduates to enter the field of pre-teaching education. A committee was formed, and the members decided that one way to increase the fund would be to have an award that could be presented to someone in honor of his/her work for children and youth. In 1937, the first Golden Acorn Award was presented. The Scholarship Foundation program for education has been revised several times since its inception, in keeping with changing educational requirements. Now, students may enter any field of study, rather than just pre-teaching, and may attend four-year universities and colleges, community colleges, vocational-technical schools, or any other accredited post-secondary institution. In 1989, the Scholarship Foundation was created to administer this program. Funded principally by the Golden Acorn statewide volunteer recognition award program, the Washington State PTA Scholarship Foundation is one of the largest nonprofit scholarship programs in the State of Washington.
