Mission: Dedicated to increasing public knowledge through washington monthly magazine and website www. Washingtonmonthly. Com. Published since 1969, the print magazine is the country's most important watchdog of american government, focusing on what's wrong and how to fix it.
Programs: The washington monthly, a wholly owned subsidiary of washington monthly corporation, was founded in 1969 by legendary editor-in-chief charles peters, who had previously served as a legislator, a lawyer, a soldier and director of evaluation for the peace corps. The magazine came to embody the crusading, public-spirited kind of reporting envisioned by the nation's founders as a bulwark of democracy. Working on a shoestring budget, peters produced a magazine committed to idea and policy creation, based on the notion that a handful of young writers and editors, armed with an honest desire to make government work and a willingness to ask uncomfortable questions, could tell the story of what really matters in washington better than a roomful of beltway insiders at a georgetown dinner party. The washington monthly is still doing what it has done for more than forty-six years, and what fewer and fewer publications do today: telling fascinating, deeply reported stories about the problems preventing us from moving forward as a nation and providing the intellectual tools necessary to reform our government institutions and enhance their performance. No other publication does a better job of looking at the ideas and characters that animate america's government, politics, and culture. Among the topics covered during 2014 were: how corporations are abusing the first amendment to obliterate government making cannabis legalization work a guide to america's best-bang-for-the-buck colleges - our exclusive list of schools that help non-wealthy students attain marketable degrees at an affordable price an in-depth look at the effects of the long-brewing crisis of a declining middle class and sluggish economic growth - and what we can do about it how to take on the monopoly in medicine by using true all-american competition to stop the staggering rise in health care coststhese articles garnered national attention - in the media and on capitol hill, where we hand-deliver three copies of each issue. We also continue to publish the widely acclaimed college guide issue, featuring deeply reported articles on higher education as well as college and university rankings based on each institution's ability to enroll and graduate low-income students and foster community service and research production. Since these rankings were first published in 2005 they have steadily grown in influence and public awareness. The magazine is known for having launched the careers of journalists who have risen to the pinnacle of the profession, and continues to train young journalists who go on to populate the mainstream media. Featured stories highlight issues and frame arguments that are often picked up by other media outlets months or even years later. And while there are those who claim that government is the problem, the print magazine and our website with 1,000,000 visitors each month (www. Washingtonmonthly. Com) fight for the proposition that better government is the solution.
