Mission: The mission of wasatch forensic nurses is to provide compassionate care and professional timely collection of forensic medical evidence as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Programs: The close of 2017 marked our completion of sixteen years of serving victims of sexual violence. This last year was our busiest yet. We provided care to 684 patients reporting sexual assault or rape. This was a 27% increase over 2016. Some of this growth was related to the expansion into utah county where we saw 136 patients. However, in salt lake county alone we saw 548 patients, which is an increase of 55 patients or a 14% increase when compared to 2016. Thus far in 2018 we have seen over 230 patients in both counties, compared to 140 on this date last year. Requests for our services continue to grow as we see patients; provide expert witness testimony and provide education to members of the criminal justice system, nurses and physicians, and community members. In 2017 we implemented the forensic electronic medical record (femr) system. This major investment of both time and money allowed us to expand our services to the neighboring county because we were able to streamline our case reporting. We are now able to upload all case information and pictures directly to a highly secure database which allows us to share information w/ law enforcement immediately. Without the need of paper, we can very easily perform peer and leadership reviews immediately following each case, and improve each nurses delivery of services and verify all policies and procedures are followed.
