The Ward 7 Arts Collaborative, Inc., has been one of the leading arts organization east of the river here in Washington, D. C. It's director Wanda Aikens, an Artist has created and shared artistic expression with my organization the Parklands Community Center during our Family Strenghtening Conference at the Washington Convention Center. Her work brighten up our space. She engaged children at the conference in artistic projects that was displayed for the attendees. Ms. Aikens is very compassionate about increase cultural programming in our community. She has lobbied for funds to expand art programs and increase the numbers of youth in art programs.
Ward 7 Arts Collaborative is truley a community organization. Its focus on bringing artisits from the ward 7 community to the forefront of the city, beautifying the neighborhood with various art projects and educating youth with important life skills through the arts is a real gem.
I have had great experiences with the Ward 7 Arts Collaborataive. Their passion for preserving African American history and culture is in line my mission to preserve African American history and culture in film and video. They have been responsible for broadening my scope and knowledge of the community known as Ward 7 and Deanwood in Washington, through commissioning my services as a documentary producer to introduce me to Mr. Ira Blount, the subject of a documentary I produced for the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative. Through the success of this documentary, they have commission me again to produce a documentary short on the live and career of the African Dance Griot, Melvin Deal and his African Heritage Dancers and Dummers.
At a time when no one cared, in a place that noone cared about, the leadership of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative have provided care for their community through the arts.
The people of the Ward 7 Arts Collaborative are committed individuals who wish to make a positive difference and enhance the quality of life for the residents, their neighbors, of Ward 7.
