Sometimes one day volunteer opportunities can seem like a waste of time, or can be disorganized, but at Urban Tree Connection they put us right to work at the Uber Street Garden in North Philadelphia. We mulched and tore down a fence alongside Skip, the founder of UTC, two of their employees, the block captain, and several of the kids who lived on the block. Our group of 15 got a good deal accomplished in a few hours, and got a chance to see the solidarity that makes Urban Tree Connection work-- the people taking time to invest in their own neighborhoods, transforming dangerous spaces into productive, beautiful community projects.
