Urban Sprouts has been an excellent resource for our school. Students have gained knowledge of what good food really is, a sense of agency of how to make wise choices and an analysis of how industrial farming and food subsidies have transformed the family meal. But it doesn't end in the classroom, they have a beautiful garden to watch how food grows and gain practical skills in farming and gardening. Beyond our students Urban Sprouts has brought in resources to our entire school community laying the seeds to make food justice a reality in public schools.

Nonprofit Overview
Mission: Urban Sprouts is a nonprofit school garden organization that serves low-income youth from San Francisco's underserved neighborhoods. We teach youth to grow, harvest, prepare and eat vegetables from the school garden in order to help them become more engaged in school, eat better, exercise more, and connect with the environment and each other.
Results: Urban Sprouts served over 3,000 students since our inception in 2003 at six San Francisco public schools: Aptos Middle School, International Studies Academy, June Jordan School for Equity, Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle School, Ida B. Wells Continuation High School, and Log Cabin Ranch. Results of our work can be found on our website.
Target demographics: Middle school and high school youth from low-income communities of San Francisco, CA.
