Mission: Our mission is to advance the interests and promote the welfare of the economically disenfranchised and homeless people in long beach by offering a welcoming environment to provide respite, nutrition, opportunity and hope.
Programs: Our drop-in center, open almost every sunday, plus thanksgiving and christmas, served over 2,600 unduplicated individuals a total of approximately 20,000 meals. The average number of guests each sunday was 260. We recorded a total of 13,343 volunteer hours by 1,370 unduplicated volunteers. In addition to providing hot, nutritious meals each week we also provide: monthly health screenings and health resource information, including meantal health addiction counseling referrals, nutrition information, basic needs assistance and a computer lab for internet access.
the temporary shelter program begun near the end of 2014 was continued:1. Provided motel vouchers for individuals and families equaling 607 bed nights. 2. Temporary housing needs: provided 152 motel voucher nights for families, and assisted 4 families with rental assistance. 3. Permanent housing assistance: placed 4 families in local permanent housing with services, helped 5 families with utilities, helped 6 families with all new housewares and gently-used furniture. 4. Accessing services: uco assists in proving clients identities, assisting 8 people in obtaining birth certificates, and 35 with resume building and job search. We provided transportation assistance to jobs or to other states for family support. We assisted 4 families in receiving free preschooling, which put 7 children in safe, educational preschool, and provided 8 families with school uniforms. 5. Partnered with antioch university to provide up to 15 transferrable college credits per year. 6. Provided computer lab access for 50 people each week, and taught computer skills to 135 people. We taught culinary skills to approximately 20 people. We referred several people for jobs, and 4 people got the jobs.
