Causes: Health, Heart & Circulatory System Diseases & Disorders Research
Mission: The mission of the cardiovascular innovation institute is to improve lives through world-class cardiovascular research, scientific discovery and new enterprise creation.
Programs: The research and development efforts at the cardiovascular innovation institute span the entire process of translational medicine from the earliest stages of basic science discovery to post market surveillance of developed therapies. Our basic research explores the underlying cause of cardiovascular disease at the cellular and molecular level. We are using cell based technologies to help regenerate weakened heart muscle. As an example, a person who has had a heart attack develops a weak heart muscle. The cell based therapies are designed to regenerate this nonfunctioning muscle, helping the patient resume a normal lifestyle. We have developed new laboratory based models of cardiovascular disease that permit analysis of how cells age and become dysfunctional. This new knowledge is translated to early proof of principle studies utilizing our pre-clinical facilities to establish the safety and efficacy of new therapies. The translation of preclinical data to human clinical trials is one of our major strengths. The cii works with companies and the fda to approve new devices and therapy for clinical trials which then can lead to fda approval. The cii develops new intellectual properties which can lead to the development of new biotechnology companies in kentucky. One of our main goals at the cii is to train and education medical professionals on new scientific techniques and technology.
