No grade school is perfect, nor is it entirely bad. Most have pluses and minuses. The key is to find a school for your child strong in areas that matter to you and with core values that resonate with your own. There are many independent schools in the Seattle area where a child can get an excellent education. Focus instead on whether the culture and atmosphere at a particular school are the ones you want determining your child’s moral growth and development.
To that end, parents considering UCDS should read carefully the following releases from the United States Department of Justice and the Washington State Department of Early Learning regarding investigations conducted during the 2013-14 school year. Both investigations detail a concerning disregard for equity and justice by the current administrative leadership at UCDS. The behavior described is discordant with the school’s self-described values and with those of its accrediting organizations, the NWAIS and the NAIS.

Mission: University child development school designs a culture of inquiry essential to meaningful learning. We cultivate reflective, collaborative, skillful thinkers who ignite positive change in their communities. We engage diverse perspectives in an ongoing effort to shape and share our innovative education model.
Programs: Pre-school through 5th grade education: in the 2016-2017 school year, university child development school (ucds) enrolled 326 students. Ucds is committed to small classes with a maximum of 18 students and an average teacher to student ratio of 1:8. Ucds currently employs 26 classroom teachers, 11 resident teachers, and spanish, physical education, art, music, science, technology and library specialists. The ucds faculty has been nationally recognized for its excellence in educating children. Ucds' childcare program serves an average of 27 children/month. In 2016-2017, $504,243 was spent on this program.
teacher education center: the ucds teacher education center (tec) creates and cultivates professional development opportunities, innovative programs and educational partnerships. The tec is committed to promoting teacher excellence and enhancing education at ucds and in the broader community.
clubs and summer program: children attending the after-school programs explore all sorts of exciting subject matter, both on-campus and during planned fieldtrips, which encourages them to discover new things about themselves and the world around them.
