Mission: The mission of the universities research association inc. (ura) is to establish and operate in the national interest unique laboratories and facilities for research, development, and education in the physical and biological sciences to expand the frontiers of knowledge, foster innovation, and promote the education of future generations of scientists.
Programs: Ntess/snl: the department of energy's national nuclear security administration (doe/nnsa) awarded national technology and engineering solutions of sandia (ntess) with the management and operating contract for sandia national laboratories (snl). Ntess is a wholly owned subsidiary of honeywell international. Northrop grumman and universities research association will support ntess in the performance of this contract. The award is valued at $2. 6 billion annually over 10 years, if all options are exercised. The contract was signed in december of 2016.
visiting scholars awards: in 2007, ura started a program to award grants to students and faculty at member organizations to pay for travel and other expenses in order for them to travel to the fermilab to perform research. The initial program was for 5 years and each member organization was assessed $5,000 per year to fund the program. In 2011 and again in 2016, the member institutions voted unanimously to continue this program for 5 additional years. The program is currently authorized through 2021.
pierre auger project: ura provided direct financial support to the pierre auger project through a grant from the national science foundation.
fermilab: through december 31, 2006, the organization was responsible for organizing, designing, constructing, and operating fermi national accelerator laboratory (fermilab) under a contract with the u. S. Department of energy. As of january 1, 2007 a new contract to manage and operate fermilab was awarded to the fermi research alliance, llc, an illinois 501(c)(3) limited liability company. Ura has a 50% ownership in the fermi research alliance, llc, the prime contractor for the operation of fermi national accelerator laboratory (university of chicago owns the remaining 50%). Ura receives 50% of earnings (as noted in the program revenue). As such, ura employees spend time managing this relationship. In december 2016, the femilab contract was extended through december 31, 2019, and fra is eligible for additional earned extensions through december 31, 2021. For the current year, the organization provided direct programmatic support to fermilab and the pierre auger project as well as research and technical assistance to the national science foundation.
