Mission: To improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of people in our community. United way of roanoke valley serves people in the cities of roanoke and salem, the town of vinton, and the counties of botetourt, craig and roanoke.
Programs: United way of roanoke valley is a unique asset to our community. Uw engages local businesses, nonprofits and individuals to determine and prioritize our region's most pressing needs. A committed network of community volunteers determines which programs make the biggest difference in addressing these needs. From july 1, 2016 - june 30, 2017, united way of roanoke valley invested over $3. 2 million dollars in quality programs, initiatives, and small grants that make a positive difference in the community. $2. 2 million came from gifts to the community impact fund, and over $1 million came in the form of grants specifically awarded to directly support united way's signature initiatives - smart beginnings, bank on, healthy roanoke valley, rehousing youth for success in education (ryse), and our early childhood data tracking partnership. Additionally, united way made investments in the work of other non-profit organizations providing services which addressed key priorities identified in the areas of education, income and health. In 2016 - 2017 fy, uwrv made investments totaling $746,950 (33% of the total) in 12 programs that were aligned to our education objectives of providing access to quality, affordable learning opportunities for youth ages 0 to 18; empowering parents to serve as their child's first teacher; and empowering youth to read at grade level and graduate high school on time. Through our funded partners and our initiatives, 1,578 children entered kindergarten ready to learn; 1,283 students received afterschool assistance and passed on to the next grade; and, 529 students were paired with a mentor or tutor to ensure they were on the path to graduation. Additionally, uwrv made investments totaling $830,334 (37% of the total) in 22 programs that were aligned to our health objectives of promoting healthy living and lifestyle choices; providing accessible and affordable healthcare services; and, providing crisis and intervention services for those in need. Though our funded partners and initiatives, 1,146 roanoke residents received quality oral healthcare; 1,624 people had access to mental health services; and $1. 8 million dollars was saved on costly prescriptions. Finally, uwrv made investments totaling $658,794 (29% of the total) in 17 programs that were aligned to our income objections of assisting individuals with access to employment and other economic opportunities; providing financial education and improving the ability of individuals to manage their personal finances; and assisting in crisis intervention and support in meeting basic needs. Through our initiatives and our funded partners, 2,500 residents received financial assistance for permanent housing and utilities; 947 tax forms were filed, returning $1. 5 million to low- and moderate-income families; and 1,241 people received job training which led to employment. Our funded partners were adult care center, american red cross - roanoke chapter, arch, big brothers big sisters of southwest virginia, blue ridge legal services, boys and girls clubs of southwest virginia, carilion clinic school-based adolescent health program, children's trust, child health investment partnership (chip), commonwealth catholic charities, council of community services, craig county youth and community services, family service of roanoke valley, feeding america of southwest virginia, goodwill industries of the valleys, league of older americans, mental health america, new horizons healthcare, planned parenthood south atlantic, presbyterian community center, the salvation army, total action for progress, united methodist community outreach program, and the west end center.
united way of roanoke valley also processes direct designations to agencies as a service to its donors. These organizations must meet minimum standards so united way can accept funds on their behalf. In 2016, a total of 463 agencies received disignations through united way donors amounting to $1,605,820.
united way of roanoke valley relies on the support of hundreds of volunteers who live in the region. In 2016 - 2017, 668 volunteers participated in a variety of ways to bring lasting change to our community which included by serving on governance committees, assisting in our annual campaign efforts and reviewing applications and programs during the investment process. Because of their efforts, over $3. 8 million was secured by uwrv through the annual campaign and grant awards that was reinvested in our community.
