Since its inception in 1958, East Central Alabama United Cerebral Palsy has proudly served thousands of children and adults with developmental disabilities, such as autism, Down syndrome, spina bifida, and cerebral palsy. A staggering 20.4% of Alabamians has some form of disability and there are an estimated 61,980 individuals with disabilities in Calhoun, Cleburne, Randolph, Talladega, and Clay County between 5 and 64 years of age (2005-2007 PUMS Data). Today, over 950 individuals and families are served, annually, through one or more of our programs. Families often find themselves unprepared for the expenses that can be associated with having a loved one with a disability. East Central Alabama UCP serves the individual AND the family in order to maximize our impact. We serve our community by subsidizing daycare services for children receiving early intervention at no cost, finance respite services to allow family members some down time to accomplish daily chores or to enjoy a night of reprieve, and provide physical, occupational, and speech therapy in order to help each child reach their development goals and specialized equipment at little or no cost to the family.
