In 2008, our daughter, an OB/GYN, and mother of twins(age 2), died very unexpectedly. With the help of a local philanthropist, we chose Seton Home as "our" charity, raising matching funds for building an education center at the home, which bears her name. This building provides a place for year-round tutoring and summer classes for the residents, ensuring their educational success. The luncheon bearing our daughter's name has become an annual event. Since the building became a reality in less than a year, the monies now raised continue to provided much need funds for on-going supplies and expenses incurred by the 30-40 girls who take advantage of this wonderful home. They are encouraged by the excellent staff to reach their maximum potential, build parenting skills, and succeed in all ways. We are proud to be associated with this non-profit and know our daughter, who valued education for young women, would be happy with our efforts.

Two years ago, after a generous friend contacted us to pick a San Antonio charity dealing with children with which to partner, we selected Seton Home to benefit from a fundraiser in memory of our daughter, Dr. Leslie Hunt Parks(38), Obstetrician-Gynocologist. We selected this wonderful organization because of its fine program of providing total care for pregnant, homeless teen women and their children. We were especially impressed that Seton Home stressed continued education for all of its' residents. There was a need for an educational building on the property, something that the leaders had desired for a long time. The 1st annual tribute to motherhood luncheon was a huge success with almost 400 in attendance and this year's luncheon is being planned. Seton Home was able to raise the matching funds offered by the Harvey Najim Family Foundation and groundbreaking on the Dr. Leslie Parks Education Building will begin soon. I know she would have approved of her name being used on such a worthy cause and soon the teen mothers will be able to attend summer classes in the new facility.

A Great non-profit that gives pregnant teens and their babies a safe and secure place to live. Seton Home has a proven record of helping teen moms overcome many of the obstacles of Parenting and helping them continue their education. This year they added a new Education Bldg. to help them obtain their goals and graduate from High School. The Staff and volunteers continue to be helpful in fund raising and continue to give generously. What a great place to work and volunteer.

In the many years that I have volunteered at Seton Home, I have seen many young girls progress from crisis to self-sufficiency. Seton Home teaches them to provide and care for their child, continue their own education, and learn to be caring and loving mothers. The spirituality program helps them to grow with God, and helps them to influence their children in a positive manner as well. I am proud to be a Seton Home Volunteer veteran.

Seton Home continues to grow, adding an education building this past year so their users/teen moms can continue their studies during the summer. Their annual fundraising gala raised a record sum of over $150K this past year. Seton Home has become financially sound while they provide a very valuable social service to their residents and the community.

My wife has volunteered at Seton Home for more than 20 years, and from time to time she has "volunteered" me to help out also. In addition to the obvious, like a totally worthy mission and the services it provides to the young women and the community, I am continually impressed with the advances and development Seton Home has experienced over time. It is professionally run by a good mix of professional staff and volunteers. One visit will show anyone that this is a worthy and stellar organization.

Doesn't anyone find it odd that this agency received a five-star rating from all reviewers, except for one, over a three week period. Who do they think they are kidding?

I have been involved with Seton Home for the past three years. In that time I have seen the how Seton Home has truly changed the lives of teen mothers and their babies for the better. The education and support provided by Seton Home teaches residents the proper way to care for their babies and themselves. Seton Home is an outstanding organization.

I have been involved with Seton Home for a number of years and have seen first hand the transformation this place holds in these young girls lives. During their stay at Seton Home, they are given life skills, educations skills, workplace skills and childcaring skills. They do this all in a loving and caring environment

I can't say enough about Seton Home. This wonderful organization provides a refuge for teen pregenat and parenting Moms when many times they have no other place to go. Seton provides a full range of care from parenting classes to day care for the children to medical care. Without Seton I am not sure where many of these mothers would learn any necessary parenting skills. The staff is extremely dedicated and provides countless hours of self less service.

Seton Home is a campus dedicated to caring for homeless teen mothers and their babies. When deciding where to spend my donation dollars, Seton Home tops the list year after year. The staff is professional and efficient. The board is dedicated to the cause. And the cause, itself, is among the most noble: caring for homeless children who have given birth to children of their own.

This organization affects GENERATIONAL change. The mothers are lifted up, told that they are worth something as human beings, and pointed toward education (high school diplomas and college). The babies benefit from a healthy, loving environment during that very important time of early development, and from the lessons that their mothers learn.

Seton Home is a wonderful organization that provides necessary support to young mothers. The employees at Seton Home not only teach young girls how to parent their children, but they provide many social services that allow these teens to succeed in life, including child care, which allows these young girls to complete their education and strive to further their education, counseling, which allows these young teens to address emotional issues and/or substance abuse problems, and values-based guidance, which helps these young girls to make good decisions in their lives.

I became instantly attached to Seton Home when delivering donated items from our Christmas Giving Tree at our parish. It was my first visit, so I expected to deliver and be gone, but I recognized the Director as a former colleague from Southwestern Bell. She gave me a tour, and I was hooked. I am impressed with the quality of the facility, the services given to the girls and their babies, and the great love with which all this happens. Thank God for Seton Home!

Seton Home wasn't around in 1963 when I faced being pregnant at 16. God was good to me as the young man I was dating wanted to marry me and I him. We also had our parents support and a wonderful church family. Having been raised in San Antonio I knew of the desperate need for a Seton Home. Living 45 miles south of SA our youth in our religion classes, where I am one of many teachers, decided to sponsor Seton Home in a small way. At Christmas our youth gather gifts for the babies and moms and then help take them there. It is so great that Seton Home provides the wonderful care and love these abandoned girls and babies need. The little ones are always smiling and love to hug. The young ladies have a safe place to have their little ones and know that loving volunteers and employees will take the best of care for their children while the girls continue their education in order to be able to have a future for themselves and their child. Where else would they have had the security and love provided for them? Seton Home gives them the opportunity to become the best they can be and be future citizens who will be contributing members of society.

Having been a young mom myself, I know the hurdles and challenges one can face, even with a supportive and loving family behind you. For this reason, I am very proud to be associated with an organization like Seton Home. Seton Home fills a much needed void for teenage girls who come from less-than supportive backgrounds yet find themsleves raising a family at such a young age. Seton Home not only provides a nurturing and caring environment, but also strives to provide these girls with tools that will carry them well into the future. Seton Home is able to do so thanks to its incredibly wonderful and talented staff from the top down.

For a good number of years, I in union with the Military Council of Catholic Women, have made it a point to support the Seton Home with donations for mothers and babies. We visit and meet the wonderful mothers who, despite difficult circumstances, have chosen to give life to their baby, within the support network of Seton Home. God's loving presence is felt through the staff who help the young mothers and babies get a good start in life.

Seton Home is a great organization. When a child has a child and no place to go., what kind of future do you see for her? Seton Home helps to teach these young moms to change a hopeless situation into a good one. They teach them how to care and be nuturing to their child. Something they themselves may not have had. They enable them to get an education, some continue on to college. Talk about raising your self esteem! I attended a luncheon and learned of some of their success stories. If anybody could have seen how proud this one young mom was that she graduated from high school and was continuing her education, there was not one dry eye in the house! We were all so proud as if she was our own.

Through working as a nurse in labor & delivery for some years, I sensed a growing desire to make a difference in the lives of teen moms and asked the Lord how I could join Him in this work. Shortly thereafter, at my church's women's retreat I met Tammy, Seton Home's director of development, and we rejoiced in this answer to my prayer. I attended volunteer training through a wonderful coordinator, Alexis, and was matched with a resident, Sophie.

The Seton Home is wonderful asset to San Antonio and the South Texas community! It gives young mothers the chance to change their lives and that of their babies. Ms. Starkey has contributed significantly to San Antonio’s community via her leadership and growth of the Seton Home, a residential facility that provides housing and supportive services for pregnant and/or parenting teens and their children, which over the last 30 years has provided help and support to over 2,300 moms and their children.

After early retirement from Southwestern Bell in 2000, Ms. Starkey, being the caring and passionate person she is, decided to take on the role of Executive Director of the Seton Home. Since the opening of its doors in 1981, the Seton Home has nearly doubled from 24 to 40 beds. Furthermore, in 2006 a newly constructed 24-unit transitional living facility was opened and the on-campus day care moved to a new building on campus which accommodates 35 infants and toddlers. With regards to healthcare, Ms. Starkey has provided the moms and babies with medical and mental health services, including prenatal and postnatal care, dental and vision check-up, annual well-mom, well-baby check-ups, and emergency services. The agency provides support to residents as they battle addiction, emotional scars due to physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, and mental illness.

Over the last year alone, 176 moms and babies had a safe and secure place to live at the Seton Home. Almost 9000 meals and snacks were provided, nearly 1,400 therapy hours and 1,300 parenting session were provided to help young moms become loving and caring parents. This has lead to 9 moms earning their high school diploma or GED.

Most importantly, Ms. Starkey has dedicated her life to making a difference for these young people opening her heart and home to them. For example, in order for the babies and moms to experience the holidays, she would have them over to her house to trick or treat in a typical San Antonio neighborhood. She has implemented an award system for good behavior allowing moms to go to cultural events or local attractions, while volunteers take care of the babies thus allowing the teenage moms to get off campus to experience what the average teenager gets to do!

Ms. Starkey is the unsung hero that has been an incredible advocate for changing lives and I hope you will consider her for the Community Outreach Award. Ms. Starkey is helping put an end to the cycle of abuse and neglect teaching the moms how to live healthy and happy lives nurturing their children.

I lived at seton home in 2004-2005. I was a young "hard headed" teenage mother whom at the time didnt realize what setonhome was doing for me. Looking back i am so blessed i was placed there. They helped me care for my child, learn how to be a parent, how to manage, how to stay strong. They helped me with childcare, with finishing my high school education. And to this day thay still help me! I am so blessed and thank ful there is an organization like seton here in san antonio texas. We need it!

I wasn't aware of Seton home until a friend 's grandchild was delivered stillborn. Instead of flowers the family suggested a donation to this wonderful place. At some time would consider getting more involved in this nonprofit, as it is so badly needed in our area. Thank you

Former Resident

As 15 year old, with an 18 month old son, drug addict mother, no father, no support, no parenting skills, and no steady home, CPS decided it was in my best interest to place me at Seton Home. I was so upset, because to me the way I was living was “normal”. I thought it was “okay” for me to be a 15 year old dropout and bounce from house to house with a baby. I thought, “He’s too small it won’t affect him”. I figured as long as I put a bottle in his mouth whenever he cried and changed his diaper here and there, I was doing a great job. I entered Seton Home as a lost, confused, and ignorant mother with abandonment issues and left as a strong woman, amazing mother, with so much purpose. Seton Home took me in, taught me responsibility, how to cook, how to manage my time, how to make doctors app., they provided me with group therapy, individual therapy, parenting classes, etiquette classes, art classes, prepared me for the workforce, and even helped me get back in school and later join college. I was only there for about 1year and it was the biggest blessing ever. I am now 21 years old, my son is 6. I am a single mother, My Son and i live alone on the north side of town in a good area, with good schools, and i work at a law office doing secretarial/paralegal work. Thanks to the therapist at Seton Home, who inspired me to be a therapist I am attending SAC and majoring in Psych. Without Seton Home I don’t Know where or even who I would be. Thank You Seton Home! Thank you Roberta, for being so sweet to me, you are such an angel.
