Often one is asked by a non-profit organization to provide critical thinking to their projects. The Union County Historical Society is one such organization where I felt energized by being part of a group of professionals that was brought together to solve problems: on subjects as diverse as new construction, rehabilitation of old structures, ground stabilization, and the interpretation and presentation of historical technologies. Not only good to be asked but rewarding to be working with others with different perspective and then to see the results in practice.
I have begun volunteering as a tour guide at the Dale Engle Walker House and at Rural Heritage Days. I was supported and given good training. The most interesting part has been learning about the early days of Union County and having visitors share their stories. The most fun was being a part of Rural Heritage Days - working with the other volunteers, seeing both adults and children enjoy the old time crafts, skills, games and food.

I visit the office weekly always to find the staff hard at work assisting those researching local and personal family histories, preparing for a guided tour, planning the next public speaking program, Rural Heritage Days events and more. I have attended many of the Society's programs. They are diverse in the topics addressed and always quite interesting. The Society owns and maintains a 1792 farmhouse on a 137 acres property protected under conservation easement held by the Merrill Linn Conservancy. A two mile scenic hikling trail there is open to the public. The dediicated staff and volunteers of this organization provide a valued resource for our area.
