Susan and staff are folks with hearts of gold, and having had the privilege of visiting the facility I can assure you the rescues feel the same about them. My first experience with a thoroughbred can be seen on “YouTube” simply search Toorizziforoy,.In memory of Doreen Cobb
I have never been around horses and was always very intimated by their size and possible strength, basically scared of them. I had brought my granddaughters to Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation as something to do with them and was so impressed by Susan Kayne and her volunteers by all that they have done for these beautiful thoroughbred horses. This visit opened up my eyes to the awareness to the insensitive and irresponsible care of these horses by their heartless owners. This non profit organization allows the public through appointments to be able to interact with these gentle horses. Susan has taken the time to educate and show children (and adults like me) how to groom, feed, and even read to these horses. The horses love it! I am so impressed by Susan and her volunteers in their tireless efforts to help save these horses and do what is right. Through their efforts anyone can see how these horses thrive being free and loved. Even I -chicken little, love going to see the horses and give them a rub on the nose. BRAVO to all at Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation, and thank you!
As someone without any life experience with horses, I met Susan Kayne and learned about Unbridled when she and I were in a class together. It instantly became obvious that Susan stands out in this work. Her compassion and her expertise with the rescue horses are powerful drivers toward her mission. Watching her build out Unbridled has been a bright spot for me, an affirmation of human kindness.
I have known Susan Kayne the woman that founded and manages Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation. I must tell you Susan is a true asset to all equines and especially those abandoned thoroughbreds she has taken in under her loving wings. Those horses lucky enough to get their lives saved by Susan are very lucky horses indeed. Susan is not only a Thoroughbred expert but she is an excellent teacher of the proper care, handling and treatment of all horses. I consider her my friend and a good one at that. I will forever be in awe at her tenacity and patience to care for those neglected, abused, starved, and abandoned souls. May God bless Susan Kayne all the days of her life so she can continue her good work. I would recommend Unbridled without hesitation! Keep up your good work Susan. You are extraordinary!
This is an amazing charity!! Susan Kanye is an angel on earth!! They rescue horses that are on their way to the killing pens of greedy people that profit from their murder. Being in the horse business I have witnessed it many times and have donated to save these lovely animals. one of them was one that we had on our farm for a time who was then sold and somehow ended up in this situation. Susan notified us about Secret Forest and we were able to save her through our donation to Unbridled. She spent the remainder of her years at the refuge being loved and cared for. They deserve all the help we can give them. Thanks, Brenda Courtney
Unbridled is the embodiment of their motto, “Love in Action”. I have volunteered here and witnessed this. Susan Kayne’s vision and knowledge serves as an example to others who want to touch and be touched by the lives of these rescued horses. Horses that arrive broken by abuse and neglect bloom here under loving, patient hands and hearts. Bruised bodies are healed and broken spirits are nurtured. I am so proud to be a part of this amazing organization.
Unbridled is an excellent organization that rescues horse that have just been thrown away. It provides love and hope for those magnificent horses that no longer race. Many of these horses have been starved for both food and love. Many of these horse have given there all only to be found on the road to slaughter. As long as the pipeline that sends these horse to slaughter house we will need organizations such as Unbridled And Susan Kanye to protect and care for horses.
Susan Kayne is an angel for these horses. In particular, the spent broodmares that are thrown away by the racing industry. When these horses can no longer produce foals, they are considered useless and tragically end up in feedlots, destined for slaughter. This is the ultimate betrayal of these magnificent, sentient, loyal animals. Susan will raise money and bail them out, giving them sanctuary for the rest of their lives. THANK YOU Unbridled for all that you do. For the boundless love, care and attention that these horses desperately deserve. When the racing industry can only see a "spent" throwaway horse, Susan sees a soul that must be rescued.
I started volunteering at Unbridled a year ago. Susan Kayne has so much love and knowledge for these magnificent horses. Her care for them is extraordinary. Every day is learning experience for me and I thoroughly enjoy helping out in every aspect. There is nothing better then going there after a stressful day and being able to brush and care for them. I am so thankful to be a part of this organization
Unbridled is not only a wonderful sanctuary for these magnificent horses, but it's an educational institution for all of the people who visit. Whenever we have people visiting from NYC we bring them to Unbridled so they can learn all about these beautiful thoroughbreds and their stories. Susan personally gave me and my family a tour on our first visit. The two kids, who were visiting from NYC, learned all about horses and now it's all they talk about. They cannot wait for their next visit this spring. Visiting these beauties calms me when I visit and when I leave I feel like I just meditated. I highly recommend visiting when in the area as it is one of the best things to do in the Hudson Valley.
If I could give Unbridled and Susan Kayne ten stars I would. This is an organization that pours its soul into caring for horses that others abuse, discard and disown. Susan Kayne leads the way, working tirelessly at the stable, online, on the phone and in person at a variety of events. I am lucky enough to be a volunteer and each week my heart is filled with love as I interact with the horses. They are excellent listeners! And they definitely remind you to be totally present. If everyone could experience seeing a skinny, sick, depressed horse transform into a healthy being displaying her unique personality with a joyful zest for life, we could change the system . As John F Kennedy said, “One person can make a difference, and everyone should try”
Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundations (UTF) is love in action. The sanctuary facility is a non-profit equine rescue organization that plays an important role in safeguarding the welfare of unwanted and neglected horses no longer useful to their owners, or in some situations where it has become impossible for owners to continue to provide care.
Returning rescued horses to optimum health, promoting humane and responsible treatment, and providing them with a safe sanctuary while they regain their unique wholeness is the essence of the program. Educating the public to the perils of these majestic thoroughbred athletes is another important goal of the program at UTF.
I feel privileged, as a volunteer, to be even a small part of the remarkable transformation of the horses as their broken bodies and spirits are nurtured, mended and revitalized through the dedication, love and care they receive from Susan Kayne with assistance from a team of dedicated volunteers.
Interacting with the horses touches my soul and it is my hope that I am touching their most inner souls as well. There is nothing quite like a warn nuzzle from the horse you are grooming or a nicker from one of the mares during morning feeding. I know one thing when I walk into the stable, it's a place of healing and love for all who enter.
Susan Kayne of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation does a remarkable job by opening up her barn doors to the unwanted Broodmares that are found in kill pens once their productive days are over. I have known Susan for quite a few years and her devotion to these horses is truly remarkable. The horses she rescues are exploited on the track and then exploited in the breeding shed. Their options are limited. There aren’t many individuals that are willing to take on the responsibility of older horses and provide for them. Susan is truly remarkable and worthy of our support. After being involved with horses for almost 6 decades, I highly recommend her and her rescue and would trust her with my own horse.
The love and caring and community that is around these thoroughbreds just overflows. You see it from the outside, in the meticulously-kept grounds. Inside, the horses are ridiculously spoiled with regular pedicures (horse-style of course), grooming, access to fields, and endless attention. Outside involvement in a myriad of ways is welcomed, as I found out when I "caroled to the horses"!
Tireless endless THANKLESS work that Susan and her crew manage is truly amazing and especially to these horses lives - Maybe one day she can turn the table on the RICH owners who no longer can AFFORD to take care the horses they take so much from -
Keep up your fantastic work Susan - and you will make a difference
The love and support given to Thoroughbreds through Unbridled is amazing! They have inspired me to be more vocal and to get involved. Thank you Susan for all that you do!
Wonderful organization that cares for neglected NY racehorses.
Always open and friendly, Susan Kayne is a tireless advocate for Thoroughbreds. Unbridled is a bright star for these beautiful souls. I find their mission to shift society's moral compass towards considering horses as sentient beings refreshing and very much needed.
Very excited to see Unbridled in our community. There is clearly an immense amount of love and labor that goes into caring for even one horse, let alone over a dozen. Thank you to the volunteers and donors who spend their time and resources caring for these beautiful animals. They say you can tell a lot about a person by how they treat animals, so it's safe to say Unbridled is full of people with hearts of gold. It is nice to know that 100% of what you donate goes directly towards the rescue and care process. This is something the Coxsackie and Athens community should be very proud of!
I had the opportunity to meet the lovely team at Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation. They are a valued Greene County Chamber Member, and my personal experience with their team has been nothing but amazing! We are so glad to have them as part of our community. To see the passion of what Unbridled believes, the love they have for what they do, and the dedication to which they cling to in order to accomplish their mission, is again, an amazing experience.
This is my favorite foundation. You can truly see the care and honor these caregivers have for the rescues. It is such a humbling experience to visit the farm that this foundation is held on.
Unbridled is a great organization helping rescue horses. It also helps educate the public because many people do not understand the hardships of this industry. The community is loving the program and its very nice to see the horses morning and afternoons when we drive by the property. Hopefully the more present it is in our community, the more help and interest we will get in our goals.
Unbridled is an incredible foundation doing amazing work and helping horses live better, healthier, and happier lives.
Unbridled thoroughbreds is Dedicated to the well being of thoroughbred horses.
I meet Susan Kayne, the founder and have been watching The Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation operate for over 2 years now and I have witnessed the many real hardships they have dealt with daily along the way. As anyone who has owned a horse knows, the care of even one thoroughbred is no easy undertaking and in this case, requires many volunteers willing to devote their time and resources to Unbridled's family of thoroughbreds. At last count there are 14 and this is constantly changing number. In addition, the horses need adequate feed and care, adequate space and shelter, and at the core, this means regular adequate funding to make it all " consistently " work. Not a single day can pass that these animals in Unbridled's care can be left to fend for themselves. I have never seen a group, which under Susan's leadership is more dedicated to the first and most important task at hand which in this case is that day to day care of their retired thoroughbred horses. In addition the mission of educating those around us of the terrible plight these animals face which includes being shipped out of the country for slaughter, is what will hopefully allow the mistreatment to stop. Those who see it and become aware, hopefully can not turn a deaf ear and will agree with Unbridled 's work and pitch in and give help however they can. I have witnessed first hand that 100% of all funding goes directly to the needs of the horses and no where else! The abandonment of these majestic creatures once they are no longer "profitable" for their owners in the racing circuit is hard to understand. I see this as a very worthy cause providing both necessary safety net for today as well as an educational forum to steer the future that I am truly proud to help financially as much as I can.
They do great work and truly love the thoroughbreds they care for
Unbridled is a unique and fantastic organization. They’re dedicated to thoroughbred horse rescue from slaughter to advocacy and everything in between. The care and transitions that these beautiful, majestic animals make tell the story of Unbridled’s devotion, passion and compassion to the cause. I highly recommend taking the time to learn more about this wonderful organization.
Susan Kayne devotes her entire being to the rescued horses at Unbridled. She rehomes those sound enough for second careers and provides sanctuary to the horses that cannot. Susan also advocates for horses at every opportunity, is a prominent equine educator, and cares about animal welfare as much as any one person can.
I thoroughly enjoy my time with Susan and her herd at Unbridled. I have done everything from cleaning stalls, helping with fundraising and, as a writer with 46 years working with horses, have written extensively about horse rescue, Thoroughbred aftercare, and Susan herself.
Kayne's transparency goes above and beyond what most charitable organizations do and she is most worthy of recognition in several fields of endeavor, especially in Thoroughbred rescue and running a nonprofit.
Unbridled does what a lot of us wish we could do but can't. You should feel good about donating to them because the money is well spent. If you're considering donating a percentage of your estate to a cause or causes I can recommend Unbridled. Stop by and see the operation for yourself or have somebody check it out and have them bring pictures back with them.
I love Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation's mission for these horses.
The work they do for "rescued" Thoroughbred horses is amazing. They give these horses a second chance after being given up by the prior owner. Many of these horses have gone on to second careers. This non-profit organization is the most transparent organization ever for rescued horses. They show you videos of their horses, their facilities, what they feed the horses, the care given to the horses by volunteers and they share all Veterinarian situations and invoices. They have an open house policy so you can visit them at any time to see the horses and the volunteers in action. They provide a receipt for your donation immediately upon receipt. This non-profit is a perfect example of how all horse rescues non-profits should operate. Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is an outstanding non-profit volunteer organization.
This is an absolutely wonderful organization that clearly cares deeply about each horse they rescue and rehome! I’ve been very impressed with Susan’s endless efforts!! She works tirelessly each day on behalf of the horses she cares so deeply for! Bravo!!
Susan Kayne- founder of Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is the perfect representation of what a rescue and rehabilitation of TB should be. The transformations of the horses are remarkable. Susan’s continual communication about the horses and everything Unbridled leaves you wanting to learn even more- and better yet- wanting to do more! Witnessing Susan’s hands on approach- whether in the barn or speaking to officials and educating the public about the plight of the TB-really motivates me to get others involved with UTF. I have watched many TB thrive in Susan’s care and has been a blessing in my life and will continue to support her and the beautiful horses at UTF!
This is a wonderful organization that really does perform miracles. Unlike some re-homing organizations that are fortunate to be given healthy OTTB'S that have been well taken care of, Unbridled rescues horses in the poorest condition and brings them back to health. The photos of the horses at time of rescue and only months later tells the whole story.
I am beyond impressed by the work that Susan Kayne has done for the animals in need. She cares for them nearly single handedly and often with limited resources. Her horses may have behavioral and health concerns, but her experience, long hours, and unwavering compassion ensures that the horses at UTF will receive the very best treatments possible. Upon visiting, it was clear that she works wonders in the rehabilitation of animals that the horse-racing industry has thrown away. Her work additionally helps bring awareness to the sad and brutal truth of horse-racing: that these trusting animals, who literally risk life and limb for their guardians, are often sent to slaughter or neglectful situations. Despite giving their best and often after sustaining life-threatening injuries, despite earning their owners and breeders countless dollars, they are more often than not relegated to a brutal death or a life of chronic pain. She understands that these animals endure chronic physical and emotional pain and does everything she can to help assuage these issues. Upon my visit to her facilities, Susan could not have been more kind as she took me on a tour and introduced me to her animals. Ms. Kayne is one of the most thoughtful individuals who I have had the pleasure to meet in equine rescue, and the products of her efforts are inspiring. I wish more people were aware of her accomplishments in equine advocacy as well as the issues threatening American horses today. I will continue to donate to UTF as long as her message and rescue efforts continue.
Review from Guidestar
Amazing foundation and volunteers who put their heart and soul into the care of these majestic animals.
Unbridled Thoroughbred Rescue is a top notch horse rescue making a significant difference in the lives of at risk horses who need a second chance at the lives they truly deserve. Susan Kayne, Founder of the rescue is so incredibly knowledgeable about the needs of these amazing animals, and communicates that in such a loving way not only to the horses, but also to the volunteers helping her care for them. Each and every horse that comes to Unbridled receives love, compassion and the hands on care they need so they can be rehomed in the perfect situation for them to thrive. I very much enjoy my time there with these very special horses, under the direction of Susan. If you love horses, and have a passion for rescue, this could be a wonderful place for you to volunteer too!
Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation is a phenominal hands on organziation. The transperancy inovled is incredibly refreshing and the dedication to the horses speaks for itself in the overall care and well being of those in its care. Susan Kayne is also a wonderful leader in humane education and also a staunch advocate for Thoroughbreds & improving the industry. She is willing to stick her neck out, ask questions others won’t and encourage fruitful dialogue. I reccomend getting involved in whatever way suits your availability and see for yourself! The fellow supporters are also an amazing, welcoming and dedicated crew- a true treasure!
This organization is spot on and does it right. The funding is used 100% for the care of the horses, and they get truly amazing care for their bodies AND their minds.
The vast majority of the horses under Unbridled's care have come to the organization in very poor shape. They are, almost to a one, traumatized and mentally and physically depleted from their recent experiences. Many have medical issues to overcome or healing injuries.
Their physical health is generally restored within months. While amazing in and of itself, that is, frankly, the easy part. At Unbridled, they are given the all the time, love and understanding they need to restore their mental health, which is a much more of a challenge.
It is an absolute joy to watch these beautiful animals blossom and to see their spirits soar. They do not leave for new homes until they are fully ready to be successful in their new environment. And they ARE successful in their new placements, with a very high percentage of those taken in finding their forever homes within a short time.
As someone who volunteers and is on site several times per week, I can honestly say I have NEVER seen animals so conscientiously and continually well cared for. They never lack for whatever they need, and it is always of the best quality available.
I am a volunteer, a donor, and an advocate, and have had extensive experience with rescues of all types and purposes. I can honestly say this is one of the best-run rescues I have ever had the opportunity to work with.
Susan IS making a difference in the welfare of many horses. Her determination and drive keep her moving forward. Her endless hours of labor and love have brought life and spirit back to their broken souls. It is clear she puts them first! Look at her work ,the before and after pictures are a real testament to what can happen .
I have seen it first hand what can be done.I can also say that donations made to Unbridled are for the care and well being of the horses.Every dollar is spent on them and only them. It's a great feeling to be part of a worthy cause.I look forward to her posts and updates every day. I enjoy the company of all of the caretakers and the time spent at the Stable.
I look forward to working with Susan and will be hands on in supporting the growth of Unbridled and I hope you will too!Get involved, you will soon feel as I do now.I am honored and proud to be part of this group!
The work that Susan Kayne and the "Unbridled " organization is doing is nothing short of miraculous. They have saved and improved the lives of countless innocent creatures. Susan is utterly passionate about her work and is completely devoted to these magnificent animals. She works tirelessly not only finding and rehabilitating rescued horses, but working to raise awareness and advocate for their humane treatment. My whole family supports Susan and the "Unbridled " mission.
I have been a volunteer with Unbridled since August 2018. Everything is done with the horses benefit in mind. Founder, President, and Chief Mucker Susan, makes sure there is complete and total transparency in all aspects. She has a emphasis on education, whether it’s how we as a society have gotten to this position, or how we can do better moving forward. Also, follow up on those who have been adopted out is almost as important as those that are taken in. This is a very worthy organization.
Everything is done with the horses best interest. The dedication and devotion of Susan Kayne and all of the Unbridled team is amazing and shows through each horse's recovery from the trauma they have endured and their return to health, happiness and being given the time and care they need to learn to love, trust and live as they were meant to live. If there were more than 5 stars Unbridled would get as many as I could recommend!!!!
I can't say enough good things about Unbridled, and its founder, Susan Kayne!!! There is transparency, accountability, and a drive to make the world a better place for horses and people through rescue, rehabilitation, and education. To give and volunteer for this organization is so immediately, and personally rewarding! You can be sure that each single donation is personally appreciated, acknowledged, and accounted for. Best of all, you can see, touch, and spend time with the horses, and witness their incredible transformations. It is a welcoming place, for horse and human!
I have been and continue to be a Donor to Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation for many months. I appreciate Susan's philosophies of both rescue and aftercare responsibilities of Thoroughbreds who need a new beginning in their lives. Additionally, I support her focus on bringing change to the thoroughbred industry with responsible breeding and an understanding of the breeder's and owner's responsibility for the lifetime care of the great horses.
I have been following and supporting Unbridled and Susan Kayne for years. Her capacity for love, respect and compassion for horses, humans and all sentient beings is beyond measure. Her message for Unbridled is one of compassion and education of WHO horses ARE and not just what they can DO for us. I really connect with that. I have watched how hard she works making sure the horses in her care come first and receive the best of everything so that their life after being saved from slaughter is a good, kind, long and loving one. Susan is open and honest about every part of her foundation and I love that she shares the daily routine with everyone and welcomes everyone to come and visit and see for themselves exactly what goes on. Many other rescues that I donated to left me feeling that something was “off”. That left me feeling very uncomfortable and never donated again. Susan’s deep appreciation and gratitude for Unbridled supporters like nothing I have ever experience before from a rescue. I am a fan and supporter for life! Most every other rescue need take lessons from Susan Kayne because THiS is how it’s done!!
I have been volunteering nearly a year with Unbridled Thoroughbred Foundation and it’s founder, Susan Kayne.
Unbridled pulls Thoroughbred racehorses from a horrible demise, unspeakable... and rehabilitates them to their former glory... redeemed for love and adopted out to loving homes for a long life with a second career.
The transformation is amazing, through Susan’s efforts, lifelong experience with Thoroughbreds and unconditional love beyond words.
I am ever so proud to be part of this organization! While other organizations accept donated Thoroughbreds, we literally save them from death and give them hope for love and a new life, so well deserved!
I recently became a volunteer with this organization. The time and effort that the founder of the organization, Susan Kayne, puts forth for the benefit of the horses is astounding and impressive!
She has saved so many horses from the killpen who were in such horrible condition and brought them back to life, not only physically, but emotionally able to start enjoying life again as a horse. You can't believe your eyes when you see these horses today and look at pictures of them when Susan got them.
She tries to match the horses up to potential adopters in a situation that is best for each horse as well as the adopter.
I am so glad that her organization exists because these horses would have gone to slaughter instead of living their life now, free of pain and fear.
