UMMA center has changed my life. The company I worked for the last twenty years moved out of state. So I found myself without a job, 43 years old, no specialized training and no computer skills. Thanks to the UMMA center I'm learning how to use a computer , and increasing my skills. Also at UMMA Center I was thankful to hear of a program CareerLink. This program helps with job skills, resume building, and interviewing skills. The great benefit is that you have the chance to gain an internship with a company. So thank you UMMA for being here for the community and for making this big impact on my life and family.
Attended a workshop on Social Emotional Intelligence. This was a very informative session and I was able to share the information with my colleagues and clients. UMMA has many free resources available to the Community. I work with at risk first-time moms and I was delighted to find out UMMA offers continuing education, GED, computer training, resume assistance, yoga, free computer/printer use, and food pantry.
UMMA Center provides anyone and everyone a safe space to feel at ease, and more importantly, a community. It's a wonderful learning environment and the people who work there are very clearly devoted to the students and the cause. 5+ stars for UMMA!
I volunteered at UMMA Center over the summer and it was such a rewarding experience. The dedication put into this organization on a day-to-day basis is so admirable, and the relationships built within its are truly genuine. The opportunities provided at UMMA are easily accessible and beneficial for anyone who walks in the doors! I love the place, the people on both sides of the door, the work they do, and I can't wait for next summer to come so I can join the UMMA family again.
Interning at the UMMA Center this summer has by far been one of the best experiences. I am so grateful for the opportunity I had to work with this non-profit organization that empowers the lives of individuals in Lake County.
The UMMA Center is a wonderful and and amazing non-profit that helps residents of Lake County empower themselves through education and social services.
The umma center has helped me a lot as I work towards my GED. I've learned a lot and have also been given opportunities to give back here, it's been a cool experience.
The umma center is really helping me out and the teachers like Mrs. T and Elizabeth are really nice and helpful they work with you no matter how long it takes. Umma center is really a great place to be. i mean i love it here so i know everybody else would...
This organization picks people up when they are down on their luck, they do not turn their back on anyone nor do they every give up. They continue to strive for greatness and better, more independent futures for others in their communities that need it most. Thank you for everything you do.
The issues and struggles that the UMMA center aims to break down have not always been so prevalent to me. I was honestly surprised that such an organization was in place and doing the work they do (instructing GED classes, providing nutrition and giving out clothing to name just a few) was in place and helping the community in Lake County. After volunteering at the center a handful of times, I can honestly and wholeheartedly say that the individuals who work at the center do what they do with a smile on their face and with the hope that the individuals who walk through their doors will have the opportunity to shut out the struggles that have been tormenting their lives for good. I really do applaud those involved with the UMMA center and the UMMA mission for bringing to light issues that the general population choose not to embrace and react towards. Bringing such a positive and life-altering light into so many heartbroken people who are striving for a better life must be acknowledged and dealt with and this is exactly what the UMMA center does on a daily basis. Keep it up!
From it's food pantry to GED preparation to it's computer training, the UMMA Center has been providing quality assistance in Lake County since it's humble beginning. This organization is top notch and it's hard to imagine what they will be able to achieve over then next ten years with their dedicated donor base.
I became acquainted with UMMA Center more than 7 years ago and I can tell you that from the Board to the staff, there is a great deal of care given to executing the goals they have created to align with their vision to help their community. This leadership helps the team remain focused and able to perform at a very high level.
UMMA Center accepts people at whatever learning level they currently have and helps them achieve greater levels of understanding. Any donations made to the UMMA Center are stretched and managed frugally. I highly recommend this organization. There is no other entity in the community that is reaching the people that UMMA is reaching.
UMMA is well run and well respected organization in the community. The organization helps so many in our community. Allowing them to build for their futures. I looking forward to being more involved with UMMA in the future!
This is a great organization that works for the community. And the community greatly benefits from this organization. The idea of education to self improve the community, is the only answer to break out of the perpetual cycle of poverty.
MashaAllah this organization has grown so much within the past few years, and has helped the community members that are in need in a number of ways.
I am truly grateful to Arshia Ali-Khan & Elizabeth Varghese of the UMMAH CENTER for helping me to find a better career path through guiding and helping me in so many ways. They were always very friendly and caring, not only did they helped me with my resume and filling out on-line applications, they also provided training for job interviews and counseling. I was very fortunate to have these services available. I will recommend them to my friends and colleague to get similar kind of help from Ummah center in the future.
UMMA helped me build a professional resume and is currently assisting me with finding employment opportunities based on my skills. UMMA has been a huge asset for me to have in trying to better myself educationally and in the work place. I am beyond grateful for the dedication and personal help have received
well I'd just like to say that this program has taught me more in 9 months then the kusd district did in 11 years.
This program is very helpful in so many ways, and you meet great people through out this experience
The services offered at the UMMA Center, are very important to the community. It offers clients an opportunity to feed both mind (educational offerings) and body (food pantry and clothing).
Thanks Umma you give people a chance to do things. Umma is a good environment and people love going there to learn. it is the best non profit organization.
To start I want to thank God for another day to do good and productive thing's.
I am truly blessed to have the support I feel and receive from the Wonderful Awesome & Caring staff at the Umma Center! They truly all go above and beyond for those that truly want to better themselves and also those that might need a little extra push. Equality. Five Stars is my rate peaceful atmosphere, and great learning experiences. I enjoy volunteering, working with Mrs Mary and Ms Elizabeth V. Their dedication and time that is spent on me is more than appreciated . I am oh so Grateful for the UMMA CENTER. Thank you All from the bottom of my heart
I'm thankful for the UMMA Center. It has helped me to perfect my skills with Microsoft Office. Ryan Gayer the Computer Instructor is very knowledgeable of what he is teaching. He has encouraged me to develop my computer skills. I thank GOD for my experience at the UMMA Center.
My name is Hattie Carter, I am a former student of the UMMA Center and I am now a volunteering TA to Ryan Gayer, the computer teacher. He is an excellent teacher who is very patient with the students and will answer any and all questions you may have.
The UMMA Center is dynamic in helping their students, from the neighborhood and surrounding areas, in accomplishing their goals in education , in three major areas: The GED Program , which helps students that did not receive their diploma in getting their GED; The Computer Training Program for those that are new to computers and those that want to enhance their skills and proficiency in using the Microsoft Office Apps; such as computer basics, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access and including internet usage. The computer classes are given in English and Spanish. Upon completing the computer courses you will receive a certificate for completion. This can be added to your portfolio, which will definitely help those of you who wish to sharpen your skills so that you could possibly get a better paying job, advancement on your current job or just start you own business and they also offer a Financial Literacy Program, which can help to improve your knowledge on how to budget and how to balance a check book. The UMMA Center also has a Food Pantry to offer assistance to anyone in need of food.
By taking the computer classes, I have increased my computer savvy to where I can think seriously about a home based business and I don’t have to pay anyone to do my computer work. If you would like to increase your skills in order to boost your hiring power, or just for your own benefit, I highly recommend that you think about taking one or all of these classes that are offered to the community by the UMMA Center for “FREE” once again for “FREE”. You just can’t let these opportunities past you by. The UMMA Center is a great place.
I'm thankful for the time Mr. Ryan Gayer (umma center) spends teaching the Excel 2014 class
Thanks UMMA, after working for a company for 21 years, I lost my job, I didn't know what to do. All the experience that I had was nothing for the companies that were hiring. I need to know more about Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc. I heart about UMMA and I call Ryan Gayer and started to learn more about all those program at the same day. I'm very happy to be part of this organization and I'm definitely learning a lot. I found a job where I don't need much of those program, but I'm still coming to classes, because I feel comfortable coming here. Ryan is on excellent instructor.
Thank you Ryan/UMMA and keep doing a great job!!!
I immensely enjoy volunteering at the UMMA Center every time I have the opportunity. UMMA is an amazing organization that provides its community with great resources and aid. Volunteering at the UMMA center made me more aware of the disappointing issues at hand in our community today. UMMA works to diminish these stresses from those that are burdened by them. This organization takes every step it can to help its clients. Personally I interviewed a few clients this past summer and they couldn't help but be extremely appreciative of the UMMA Center. This organization has changed so many lives and will continue with great success in the future. I will definitely come back and volunteer at the UMMA Center with any opportunity I have!
I'm thankful for the time MR. Ryan Gayer (umma center) spends teaching these classes....
My Father teaches the class on Excel at the UMMA center and he told me I could learn a lot about Excel program if I took the class. So, I took the class and learn everything very quickly the program that taught me was quick and to the point about the basics of excel. although a have much to learn about excel I know a lot more thanks to this class.
UMMA does wonderful things in their community! The staff and volunteers truly care about the population they serve.
I first learned about UMMA when the founder informed my husband and I about his idea to tackle poverty in the Lake County area. While it sounded like an impressive and ambitious plan at the time, we never imagined how much of a real impact it would make and how it would flourish as it has over the last ten years. We have met people whose lives have not only been enhanced and improved by UMMA's work, but significantly changed due to the opportunities, services and basic needs that UMMA has brought to them. I have no doubt that the success of the UMMA Center comes from the sincerity, dedication and enthusiasm of its team of staff, volunteers and board. Due to the numerous benefits that that the UMMA Center brings to the community, it is one of the organizations that is always on our list to support every year. We look forward to seeing more lives improved through it.
Volunteering at UMMA for the past 10 years has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. The staff makes you feel like you are at home and has hearts of gold. UMMA is everyone's happy place and where they go to shine when life has been bringing them down. Thank you UMMA for giving me the opportunity to be a part of your community!
I think UMMA is a great place. You can say they are a gift from God. They provide free classes to everyone and internet access for some of us that need help financially. I thank God for the statt at UMMA for all their help and support. They dont have to do what they do, but they go out of their way to help each person individually. All the staff at UMMA are so nice and caring. Overall I rate UMMA a 10 out of 10.
The UMMA Center has positively impacted so many lives over the years. The GED, Computer training and food pantry continue to meet individuals where they are and assist them on their way to where they want to be. Donations to this organization as well as grants they are awarded go to impact lives right now. Here's to 10 more years of making a difference in Lake County!
Iam a student at the umma center for my GED and I am so happy for the help that the umma center has for us that we live in low income housing and cant afford to go to collage to study. The umma center helps us with not only school, but with food, gives us free computer classes and other classes. plus i have been with the umma center since 2004. I never gave up despite of where I came from and will never forget where I came from. The staff at the Umma Center always gave the ability too know that I was somebody and with the help of the staff and GOD up above I am where I am suppose too be. I SINCERLY WANT TOO THANK THE STAFF OF THE UMMA CENTER. SINCERLY MARIA L. GARZA
what i like about UMMA.
i like UMMA , because it is like my second home. i come in, say hello to everyone and they say hello back. if you have a problem they there to help you.the classes are grand, when you come in you have all of programs, like G.E.D,COMPUTE CLASSLESS etc. ....and the teachers are like our mother,or father, because they tell us what right not wrong. and the the executive director, and the director of business dev,and marketing is the head of the house hold, we come to them to talk, and communicate. UMMA is like my home - that I feel about the UMMA Center.
Over the course of the years, the UMMA Center has been very generous with the community of Waukegan by providing low-income families with bags of food, free GED classes, clothes, shoes and many other necessities. The times that I have volunteered, I have seen the needs of the people and I have heard their problems in reference to their living conditions. When people who complete the GED program leave, they are often in tears because they thought they would never be able to accomplish something but with the help of the teachers here, it is possible and they are always grateful for the help and always express their gratitude in one way or another. The number of unemployment rates is very high and people are having to go through many things because of their economic instability.
Indubitably, the UMMA center has helped hundreds of families across the Lake County region and others as far as Kenosha.
It's important to have centers like the UMMA because poverty is a serious problem that has to be dealt with, not only here but world-wide. The center inspires people to be the best they can be and to be kind and helpful to others who may need assistance in any way, shape or form. The community needs people who are willing to do things like this and people who will look out for them when they are in distress.
I am thankful that the UMMA Center is here; if it weren't, the community would be very different than what it is with their help here.
En la organizacion de UMMA e aprendido a suprarme en el manejo de la computadora, que me sirve para mi trabajo diario, siempre que encuentro personas que hablan de ganas de suprarse y aprender la computadora les recomiendo a UMMA. My name is Kirill Atnashkin and I recently joined UMMA volunteering team. I wish i could say that reasons i joined were from the kindness of my heart however I am in a burden to complete community service for judicial reasons. This is only my first week here and I already enjoy spending time here. UMMA Center is focused to assist people in need of food basic needs and education. this center provides powerful tools for people to accomplish their goals. Even I'm doing simplest task i would love to take a step further and be more active with people who are walking through the doors seeking another chance, change or meal.
I was born in Russian in suburbs of Saint-Petersburg and migrated to United Stated when i was 14 years old. Me and my family can share personal experiences of need of food and help and I'm grateful that my mother met my step dad and he gave us all an opportunity in the land of the dreams. However, I am still uncertain whatever I want to do as a career because I am lost in a career field. Full time employed I don't have much time and finances to afford school and in past years I showed little effort to be or achieve a degree.
With UMMA Center center is open to people of all ages and all ethnic groups to help and by giving my time, effort and heart i hope to change lives of some people including mine. I rate my UMMA experience as a 4.5!
Volunteering at the UMMA center has been an experience that I will never forget. I am a student in the area and it was great to find an organization that helped the local community in the way that UMMA does. My favorite part about this organization is that while it has a food pantry and clothing drives, it also has classes that helps people learn and better themselves. This place is a great example of how to give back to a community in the best way.
today was my first day volunteering at this great organization. I witnessed lot of people coming looking for clothes and other stuff.
it was a great honor to be here. i would love to be here as often as I can. It is great to have this great organization that helps people in all fields of their lives irrespective of who they are. In the field of education, clothes or other things.
I hope and pray that this organization persist for a long time and we keep on helping this as much as we could.
Volunteering at UMMA has been a wonderful experience for me. It's all about helping out their community to better themselves. They offer GED classes, money management, and computer classes as well. I almost forgot they also have a food pantry, so if you know someone that is going through a rough patch and needs a helping hand they are here to help. The staff is caring, understanding and friendly. If you ever are in the Waukegan area stop by and lend a helping hand you won't regret it!

Gracias, a umma. por darnos la ayuda de poder aprender a usar la computadora y es para mi una experiencia maravillosa y yo en cuanto tengo oportunidad hablo de umma y lo recomiendo 100%.
This is by far the best non-profit I have ever been involved with. From top to bottom, the donations and grants acquired by the organization are always put to the best use possible. One would think that a smaller non-profit might suffer from lack of organization, yet the UMMA Center has had quite a bit of success at generating excitement to give back to the community. The leadership and vision has always remained constant, well communicated, and well executed. The money acquired from the Digital Divide Grant from the state provided a huge boost in the center's ability to serve the community providing a newly furnished and equipped computer lab. I have witnessed, first hand lives that were impacted by the training provided at the center.
I visited UMMA to learn more about the organization and to see first hand what services are offered to the community. I was very impressed by the administration and staff and their dedication to, and implementation of, their stated mission. Offering the underserved In Waukegan and nearby communities educational services and classes, a food pantry and cooking classes and general support, offers UMMA clients and interested residents a place to receive positive reinforcement and hope for a brighter future. I am considering becoming a volunteer.
For over a year I volunteer as a Financial Literacy coach and work with individuals on all aspects of personal finance matters. I offer ideas and suggestions to reduce monthly living expense and create monthly budgets, understand credit, how to balance and maintain a checking account. The goal is to help individuals gain a working knowledge of personal financial matters and also help manage monthly income / expenses. I also work with individuals helping them understand their credit score, how credit reports work and what they can do to either establish or re-establish good credit.
I have been volunteering at UMMA Center since its inception and I am very passionate about. I was ecstatic when UMMA Center received the funding for setting up new computer lab; this resolved many technical problems we had to deal with obsolete donated computer. We have this enterprise level computer lab which the UMMA clients have access to and serve the community in general. Volunteering had been very satisfying experience for me, knowing that even few hours spent goes long way for the community.
UMMA initiatives are beyond any racial and financial bounds, throughout the years this organization grew in many folds and offered a variety of programs, not just education or counseling. I am particularly moved by the “Adopt a Refugee” initiative, everybody has their own personal struggles but it’s hard to comprehend a refugee’s life in new country. UMMA recognized this and has been successful at organizing, supporting and delivering help to refugees.
UMMA Centers staff have high level of dedication, putting in countless hours in operating the center and keeping it on track, motivating the volunteers and donor in the tough economic times.
I congratulate UMMA’s Staff, Board, Directors and Volunteers for being model organization.
