Established in 1970, UCSJ was, until the fall of the Iron Curtain, a major "activist" Soviet Jewry NGO, the "voice of the Refuseniks in the West." Since 1990 it has become a human rights and rule of law NGO, specializing in the monitoring of antisemitic and xenophobic hate crimes, the key bellwethers of Russia's (and elsewhere in the FSU) corrupt and dysfunctional rule of law. Two years ago UCSJ established the unprecedentedk Coalition Against Hate, a partnership of, now, more than 50 human rights and religious freedom NGOs across Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. Regular reports of their work include UCSJ's website, UCSJ.org, its weekly electronic newsletter, Bigotry Monitor, and the Coalition's bi-lingual, interactive Blog, www.CoalitionAgainst.Hate.org. Antisemitism and xenophobic hate crimes and propaganda, which includes Jew hatred, Israel hatred, America hatred and democracy hatred, are on the rise and affect Europe and the Middle East as well as the former Soviet Union. This is a too often overlooked issue and region of concern for the causes of human rights and democracy. It is especially important to mentor the human rights youth organizations both because the adult human rights dissidents are aging and because the Russian government is supporting an especially nationalistic youth organization that rivals the neo-Nazi skinheads in their hatred of America. How frequently: every day for 22 years.
