Causes: Environment, Natural Resources Conservation & Protection
Mission: The mission of the tyonek tribal conservation district is to conserve, enhance, and encourage the wise use of natural resources. Our core values are to meet the needs of district stakeholders, form cooperative relationships, and to use what the earth has to give. We are a non-regulatory organization that seeks to help our stakeholders achieve their conservation goals by providing technical and financial assistance.
Programs: Technical assistance and outreach program: this program was funded through the tyonek native corporation, the usda natural resources conservation service, and the usda office of advocacy and outreach. Through this program, ttcd provides outreach to our stakeholders on usda programs and conservation best practices. Ttcd has provided these services to the tebughna school, the native village of tyonek, the tyonek native corporation, and others.
fish passage program:this program was funded through the us fish and wildlife service and the tyonek native corporation. Two projects were accomplished as part of this program. One project involved improving fish passage in tyonek by replacing a fish passage barrier with a fish-friendly culvert on indian creek. During 2012 staff coordinated contractors and purchased materials to install an 8 diameter 60 long culvert in indian creek. The majority of work, including installation, for this project was completed in 2012. The second project involved the development of a natural resource assessment and implementation plan for the tyonek tribal conservation district. This project included gathering relevant data and information, meeting with partners, and planning potential conservation projects in the tyonek area and other parts of the district.
tyonek community garden program: this program was funded through contributions from the tyonek native corporation. Through this program ttcd provided assistance to the native village of tyonek in planning and establishing a community garden. In 2012 ttcd coordinated planting days in the local school, coordinated and participated in preparing land for garden including installation of fence, building raised beds, installing irrigation system, planting and harvest, and well as future planning for project.
