Mission: Reduce hunger and improve
Programs: The two harbors area food shelf (thafs) has been serving the two harbors area in rural lake county minnesota since 1982, becoming our own 501(c)(3) nonprofit effective january 1, 2015. Open on tuesdays from 10am-4pm, we served 111,338 pounds of perishable and non-perishable items to 4,008 individuals from 428 households in 2017.
emergency boxes are provided for those needing additional assistance beyond the monthly visit and are eligible for 2 per year. Thafs has partnered with the local kwik trip and superone grocery for weekly food rescue to provide fresh produce, dairy, bakery and frozen meats to food shelf customers.
the thafs has established the marek fuller community garden in an open area next to the food shelf building. Food shelf customers are offered first option on the 38 4x16' beds. Community groups, such as churches and youth groups, also maintain a bed(s) with their harvest donated to the food shelf. Master gardeners and university of minnesota-extension collaborate in eduction for garden participants.
