Trout Lake Nature Center is a great place to connect with people, learn about nature and volunteer. I've been a volunteer for many years and enjoyed every second knowing that I'm making a difference and helping to save a small part of my world.
This is one of the most efficiently run nonprofits that has learned to reuse, recycle and reinvent daily. Working on a shoestring budget and with only 2 full time staff and a 2 day a week maintenance person, they touch the lives of over 29,000 people annually and provide school programs for thousands of students. They remained open throughout Covid and provide a safe place to get outdoors. Programs were adapted for smaller numbers, outdoor venues, and even online. They are constantly growing and improving.

Causes: Environment, Environmental Education
Mission: The mission emphasizes environmental education for children and adults. The children's education, largely for elementary schools is designed in conjunction with florida state standards and administered by volunteers and staff. The adult programs involves staff and non-staff experts conducting activities on site and also include visits to other locations.
Programs: During the school year, visitations are conducted from elementary schools, plus charter, private and home schooled children. Programs meet florida state education standards and are taught by staff and volunteers. To a lesser extent there are groups of children visiting during the summer. For the entire year, approximately 8,845 participated in the student environmental education programs. Students are exposed to academic concepts like adaptation, habitat, food webs, photosyntheses and much more. For many children this is their first experience in a natural outdoor classroom.
the center is open to the public without charge. Groups can arrange visits that involve staff and/or volunteers. People can walk the trails leading to a boardwalk that ends at a dock on trout lake. The education and museum buildings contain a large collection of mounted specimens native to florida, ranging from various birds, snakes and fish to a black bear and florida panther. There are a small number of live specimens. There are additional trails on the property. One known as the adventure walk and other trails into other parts of the property.
