1. In the 9th grade, I volunteered at the local foodbank. I filled backpacks with food. The food in the backpacks was sent home for children to eat on the weekend. Two years ago the program ended. I went to local school principals and asked them if they felt that the program needed to be started again. The response was that these services needed to be provided to needy children in elementary schools. I wrote a grant and received $10,000.00 to help pay for the needed food. I volunteer each week filling the backpacks that will go home with over 80 students each weekend. I learned about how much better students do and how much better they are able to focus in school if they are not hungry. I learned how to improve my communication skills, because I had to work with people in scheduling volunteer hours and talking to people about getting donations.
