Mission: The mission of the trailhead discovery museum & arts center is offer an engaging and dynamic envrionment that inspires children and families to explore, create and learn together through discovery and play. The trailhead's purpose is to serve the needs of gunnison county's children, their families and educators as a place of interactive learning and discovery through exhibits and programs in the arts, sciences, and creative play. The trailhead children's museum exists to fill the need for educational enrichment, as well as a community meeting place where families can disconnect from the inevitable pressures and distractions of modern life, and connect with their children and other families in meaningful, interactive ways. In the past year, the trailhead has served more than 10,000 children living in and visiting gunnison county through stimulating exhibits, engaging programming, and wide-spread community and school outreach.
Programs: Additional (not included with admission) educational programs: the trailhead serves children ages 3-12 with the following programs: little innovators (for ages 3-6); after-school enrichment classes in the arts and sciences (for ages 5-12); advanced art (for ages 9-12); school break art and science camps (for ages 5-12); after-school art and science club at the crested butte community school; summer camps (for ages 5-12)children enjoy almost 2,000 visits to these programs annually.
museum admissions - internal (included with admission) educational programs: the trailhead offers weekly drop-in programs including create with kelly: a guided art adventure; sunday science: a journey in experimentation and discovery; letter of the week: a playful program teaching pre-literacy skills. Sales of science and art kits and related learning tools are available in the gift shop at the trailhead. The trailhead also hosts many guest artists and educators that provide engaging learning experiences for visitors' of all ages. Approximately 2,800 children and parents participate in these programs annually.
exhibits - the trailhead's exhibits are used regularly by our members and families as well as approximately 5,000 visitors annually. Above and beyond our exhibits and programs the trailhead is constantly looking for opportunities to collaborate with other organizations and infuse art and creativity throughout the community. The trailhead also works with local area preschools, public schools and human services and mentoring organizations to offer significantly discounted rates for group visits and educational programming. New exhibits added in 2012 include the interactive musical garden and the whimsical log cabin tree house.
