When you try to get in (as a homeless person seeking shelter), there's paper work to fill out and one question asked is emergency contact information. If you don't have one, which many homeless do not, they won't let you stay and will literally put you out in the freezing cold to live, not caring that you could die. These people are so cold hearted. Someone not having an emergency contact should not cause them to not be allowed to stay but it will. I know this first hand because I was one of these people. Management does not care about human life and there are lots of other stories, like this, where someone was put out even in the freezing cold without good reason. I was not served here and wasn't allowed to stay, only because I didn't have an emergency contact information. The director of the women's shelter spoke with me and defended this policy.

My experiences with the mission have been horrible. Their staff pick and choose who they want to get services. Their staff are very disrespectful. They make up their own rules as the day's go by. They do not check on everybody in tent city on a daily bases like Barry feeker says they do. They have came to tent city and told me i don't need anything. But give everyone else out there anything they need. I have no heat they have not attempted to help me in that aspect. I have been banned from the mission 3 times by a staff member named Bobby twice and again by another staff member that i was unaware was staff due to him being clothed like a resident. The staff cuss at the people from the community They down talk those of us from tent city. You even have people that claim They are helping us in tent city but they also pick and choose who they want to give the donations to. I'm also being told buy them that i don't need anything. I'm tired off being singled out I'm the only African American female out there with out heat. I some of the so called homeless out there have a place of their own. Everything i have i bought for my self and i have been blessed to get help from a few Angel's that have been there for me since my tent caught fire other then that. I have to get my self while other's are getting it given to them. I'm tired of the mission lying about what They are doing for those of us that are homeless. Anyone telling you They are doing a good job are lying. They take the money and pay Their staffs rent with it. They are buying Nike and all kinds of other expensive attire. They can not possibly be doing the things they say are doing in the name of my farther because my father would not collect donations and sell therm back into the community of tell the homeless they have to go to another charity to get the things they need like clothes shoes and household items. Although They still accept donations from the community. They have served out dated food all the time. When I was eating there they serve bacon asst breakfast and only hand out one piece of bacon but have a whole tray full after ward's they throw away all food that they choose not to serve. They only serve seconds. I've watched while pans of food go to waste there.

I've worked with the Rescue Mission on a number of professional projects with work as well as personally donated to them. They do a lot of great things to help those in need here in Topeka. They work with the resources they are given, spend donations wisely on things that are needed, and make huge impact on people.
