Toberman Neighborhood Center has provided a safe environment for children in their after school program. In addition to providing educational support to children, they also cater to their social and emotional needs. Their investment in the community can be seen in their improved facilities for children enrolled in their program. It is exciting to see them rebuild a new playground!

I've known about and have partnered with Toberman Neighborhood Center since 2008. The programs, services and resources they provide the individuals, youth and families in the Harbor area are life changing. Whether it be case management which leads to access to their abundant food pantry, thrift store or free tax program, or homework assistance in their afterschool program, they really work to help each person reach their potential. Through their Gang Prevention and Intervention program, gang violence is down, meaning the streets are safer for all. Working at another local non-profit, I've found Toberman easy to partner with. Whether it be referring our clients to them or vice versa, the staff has always been amazing.
Toberman has been around for over 100 years and it shows! Keep up the good work!

Toberman NC is a great place to find resources that help families thrive and build capacity in an underserved community. The staff is kind, patient and knowledgeable on navigating the systems to help connect families to the appropriate program or resource. Food assistance, rental assistance, clothing, homework help and tax prep are available when folks connect with case managers. Reliable organization that is there when needed. RG

I donate to the Thrift Store often. I go to Toberman over other Thrift Stores because I know they are giving the clothes/items out at a below market value that the community can actually benefit from. Thrift Stores nowadays mark up the price and it seems like those Thrift Stores aren't even discounted items.

Toberman has demonstrated over the years that they are always available to assist the community when it is needed. Their doors have always been open, particularly during the recent covid epidemic. Many families were assisted with applying for food pantry access, utility assistance, rental assistance, etc. Their current staff consists of individuals who were clients at one point in their lives. There is a great deal of care shown by Toberman for the community and they are always giving back. There are various ways to accomplish this, including backpack giveaways, turkey baskets, providing toys for children during the holidays, and hosting a variety of events throughout the year. Last but not least, Toberman has always been a warm and welcoming place where you can receive assistance, learn new things, and where you can feel at home.

I can recall when I moved into my first apartment in 2010. I had no furniture, no refrigerator, nor a bed to sleep in. I reached out to a friend that work at Toberman and nominated me for adopt a family during the holidays. That nomination changed my life. I was adopted and my family was blessed with living room furniture. Later, I was called back to pick up a bedroom set that was donated to me. A few weeks after that I received a refrigerator. Toberman staff was so amazing during my time of need. Since then I have been employed by the organization that help me so much. I recently wrote a book and in the process of getting it published. I have been here now 12 years giving back to those that seek assistance. I have been motivated to go back to school, which I am Class of 2023 from Los Angeles Harbor College and seeking to transfer to The University of Cal State Dominguez Hills in the fall to pursue my Bachelors Degree in Sociology.
Thanks to Toberman

Tobermans ceo...is a f**** B. Ecuse my language. She is nothing nice. She is supposed to help people stay in their homes and help with evictions and homelesness. And her being a victim to this type of stuff you would think she would fight and stand tuff against anyone facing that.Well I lived at the Toberman Neighborhood center for 3 years and this is my story that happend just last week. Lupe would constantly harass me on
a daily basis, accusing me of stealing from the vehicles parked at toberman, telling me just to admit it because the cameras seen it all. I don't crap in my own back yard, I replied to her. Anyway she called the police on me claiming I had threatened her with violence of some sort just to get me out of the apartment after we had a verbal agreement that I'll be leaving by the 2nd week of April. I was arrested and charged with a felony criminal threat that was dropped in court because she lied about the whole thing. As soon as I got arrested her and some other employees at T.N.C were in my apartment changing the locks and going through my personal property, as well as not making sure my stuff was being taking care of. She was celebrating my arrest with some of her employees. I know because I got video of the whole thing. She was ripping my curtains off and let her employees just ramsack the apartment like if they were the police with a warrant. As of today my property is missing and I had $6500 put away in the apartment that is also missing. I ain't saying that they took it, but her irresponsible way of letting people go in there has led me to belief that someone that was there helping Lupe get my stuff out found and kept the money. That was supposed to be first and last moñth rent money as well as part of the deposit. The part that hurt the most is that I went to jail and could of been put away for a long time just because of her evil, selfish ways. She shouldn't be working there especially as a CEO. She should resign and charged with a crime for lying to the police and making up stories about me to get me out and throwned out to the street. Toberman is supposed to help people w crisis not throw them out in the street and making it harder than it is. Especially these days with inflation and stuff. During my 3 years as a tenant there alot of my packages delivered to Toberman ( we shared the same address) were being signed by Monica the lady in the front office and never given to me or my roomates. So much so that we were charged by Amazon for the packages and our accounts were being cancelled or stopped for us committing fraud. My experience really was traumatic and I'm sharing this so people in the community could read and know the truth about this C.e.o. and raise awareness.I can't even get me a lawyer or Somewhere else to live cuz all of my $ was taken by this non profit

I have been involved with Toberman for over one year. I have seen Center adapt to meet the needs of the community. Toberman has a mobile food pantry that delivers groceries to its members. They had a wifi club so students had the opportunity to attend online classes. Toberman now offers onsite rapid Covid 19 testing and they have had several vaccine clinics to help vaccinate the community. During the holidays, Toberman delivered Turkey baskets and Christmas gifts to its community members.

Last year I became involved with Toberman when I volunteered to deliver gifts at Christmas. Knowing that I was bringing joy to families was very fulfilling! Since then I have continued to give to the food pantry and can't wait to volunteer during the holidays again!

I Give... Because I've Been There!!

My name is Amanda and I give because I've been there. Let me give you a little back story on myself. I'm a single mother, and sole provider of 2 beautiful children. A 5 year old and a 3 year old who have been forced to grow up too quickly. What do I mean by that? I guess I'm speaking more in the emotional aspect of life. My children have been exposed to hurt, failure, and fathers who were able to just up and leave their responsibilities like over chewed gum.

I work for a non-profit organization located in San Pedro, California called Toberman Neighborhood Center. I have only been employed here a few months, but I can truly say that I feel for the youth we service. Every morning on my way to work I listen to a song called 'Held' by Casting Crowns, to remind me that- what I am going to work for is not for me; it's for these children that everyone way to frequently overlooks, or looks down upon.

The kids that Toberman service are children whose families are larger than their income, have drug addictions, are victims of violence in the home, or have fallen victim to and or become witnesses to gang violence. These children have a world of destruction surrounding them at the age of 5. Dreams are typically shattered at this point for them, due to the lack of family involvement, bullying at school, verbal put down, and a constant string of bad days.

When I look back to my own situation, it is not that far off. Both of my children's fathers made it absolutely clear that they were not the first priority in life and that whatever else they had going on was what they wanted and left. The only thing that has kept my kids from giving up has been me. Not to say I'm a great mom; because I am far from that. I have bad days and I have my faults, but my kids don't see that. My kids see the support team that I have working behind me and encouraging me to continue to push through. Without a support team like that I don't think I would be able to provide the support my children need emotionally.

That is what Toberman is to the families they service. Toberman offers counseling to every family; whether it is for drug addiction, violence, gang retaliation, or loss of a loved one Toberman is there to listen to each individual need and help empower a family to mend broken hearts. Toberman has created a safe haven for children to grow emotionally, build confidence, and to strive for their dreams. There are endless success stories from once 'Toberman Kids.' The kids that were once looked down upon and were told they wouldn't amount to anything are now striving to make a difference; (One Toberman kid is now employed at The Boys and Girls Club working with youth and giving back) or have proven that they were worth it (another Toberman Kid owns his own shop in San Pedro called BadFish clothing company, and another is Major General Peter Gravitt, who is a honored 2 star General).

I am proud to be a part of the support system that these children see and that I work for the place where hope was restored for many.
