I was recently introduced to Tipping Point Community through a good friend, Lorraine Fox, a portfolio manager at Clear Rock Capital, who recently put on a conference on endowments and business models for nonprofits. Lorraine introduced me to Kelly Bathgate, TPC's Manager of Strategic Partnerships. I was so impressed with Kelly's passion and capabilities and after browsing through its website, I was immediately compelled to make a large donation. Here's what sold me - TPC was started by Daniel Lurie in 2005 based on Malcolm Gladwell's premise that a few passionate people with a good idea can spark change...big change. Since then, TPC has raised more than $38 million to educate, employ, house and support nearly 150,000 Bay Area people in need. And, they diligently measure their success. TPC's board underwrites all operating and fundraising costs so all the donated funds go to poverty fighting organizations in the Bay Area. TPC screens and evaluates thousands of nonprofits, sending teams out to do in-depth site visits to select and support organizations in the areas of housing, wellness, employment and education. The organizations must meet strict criteria of strong leadership, clean financials and measurable results in the fight against poverty.
With this kind of focus, talent, effectiveness and efficiency, how can we not "Make Poverty Preventable."

Mission: To serve as a resource to fight poverty in the san francisco bay area through the provisions of grants and support to leading non-profit organizations and businesses, and to individuals for the purpose of collaboration for the development of new programs designed to directly impact the bay area's poor.
Programs: Tipping point's program team conducts an average of 100 hours of due diligence per organization before writing a check. We look for strong leadership, clean financial statements and a demonstrated willingness to measure outcomes. Once an organization is in the portfolio, we renew general operating grants on an annual basis so long as there is progress toward mutually agreed upon goals. We use a mix of pro bono and contracted services from our partners, targeted trainings, and staff advice and expertise to support grantees beyond dollars to increase their impact in the fight against poverty.
