Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: Our mission is very simple - to allow thoroughbreds an opportunity through our sanctuary that will allow each horse to obtain either rehabilitative care or a means to find a safe and well purposed home and avoid the slaughter pipeline. For those who encounter our program- there is absolutely no excuse for any thoroughbred to enter an auction and be subjected to slaughter. Our program offers every owner or trainer the option to surrender a horse to us given the stall space at the time. Our horses are adopted out with a no-slaughter contract. With each horse adopted out, a new stall space option opens for the next horse. Each horse is followed for their entire lifetime and offered the option to return to us in the event they can no longer be cared for or are no longer desired- no questions asked. Horses are always offered free training advice in their new homes at all times/ We host a no-hassle environment, which means owners and trainers can always trust and turn to us to enlist their horses, as well as visit and learn updates on their horses in their new homes. Our horses are allotted stall space, veterinary assessments, proper let down time as well as professional training. Here at TRRAC, we use only the top veterinarians as well as professional insured and trusted shippers to ensure each horse arrives safe and sound at their new homes.

Results: Over 100 horses safely rehabilitated and rehomed!

Target demographics: retired race horses to find new homes and careers

Direct beneficiaries per year: over 35 horses find safe sanctuary through rehabilitation and new careers!

Geographic areas served: areas to help impact proper and safe race horse retirement and rehoming

Programs: rehabilitation and educational purpose.

I just adopted Big Prize, TRRAC's slaughter save, from Nina and Charlie. For a horse who has gone through so much, he is the most willing and gentle boy I've ever met, which I totally credit to his first months of rescue and the patient interactions and schooling he was given. When I first called to ask about him, Nina first asked about what I was looking for and my experience with OTTB's before giving an honest disclosure of his life and temperament. Having dealt with other adoption agencies who were not so transparent or thorough, I appreciated this right away because it showed me how important it was to find the right home for him, rather than just any home. Nina told my trainer and I that she believed he needed his own person to bond with and trust, and he's proven her right. In just 6 days of work after we brought him home, he went from needing a half hour of patience before I was able to get on at the mounting block (something they had been working on at TRRAC) to allowing me to mount all by myself without any help. At Nina and Charlie's he was shown that no one was going to push him past his limit and he was not going to be punished for his fears. He transferred that trust to me so quickly, and it makes my heart melt. I am so grateful they chose to save him, and that he chose me as his person.

TRRC is a great org fearlessly run by Nina and Charlie. They are practically inexhaustible and try as hard as they can to give their horses the best possibility of success, whether or not they have the potential to be four-star eventers, or distinguished lawn ornaments. They deserve all the praise in the world for their efforts.

In an industry where too many are only concerned with what the animal can give to them (earnings, notoriety, etc) TRRC is an organization concerned from start til finish, they recognize and appreciate what the horses choose to give us and in return they gift them with concern, dignity and longevity through nutrition, medical care, training and a genuine care and interest in who they go to next.

Nina is more worried about talking about how great she is and blasting people on Facebook so her mob of friends can attack people than she is actually doing anything. Very narcissistic and unprofessional. I’m sure she will find this review and screen shot it blasting me so her followers can talk about how horrible of a person I am. Solid advice, get off social media and actually spend time with the horses instead of writing whiny poor pity you novels and blasting people.

In August 2018 I was fortunate enough to discover TRRC and meet Nina and Charlie of Maui Meadow Farm. I instantly loved Nina and was thoroughly impressed and appreciative of her genuine love, extensive knowledge and sincere dedication to these horses. It is thanks to these amazing people and all of the incredible work that they do, that I am now the very proud mama of Woodstock Memory aka Woody. To anyone considering adopting a horse, I wholeheartedly and highly recommend TRRC. I will forever be grateful to them for all they did for Woody.

A mere email and phone call began a conversation and eventual partnership with Aftercare Charles Town and TRRAC in the fall of 2017. Since then several retired racehorses from the Charles Town, WV racetrack have landed safely under the watchful eye of Nina Lyman. The lengths they go through to ensure the very best medical care is by far the best and well worth the rptime and money spent to rehome, repurpose and retrain these wonderful athletes. We are proud to say that all but 1 of the horses taken in by TRRAC have been adopted.

TRRAC is a top class barn offering thoroughbreds that have been expertly evaluated, treated (if necessary) and restarted for their next careers. They make sure that each horse is paired appropriately with their next owner with full PPE information. I cannot say enough good things about this organization.

Great way to help horses in need! This should be up in more places for more people to see because I think it is amazing! If I had space for more horses I would buy them all :)

Nina and Charlie go above and beyond to help out Thoroughbreds in need! Their care is 5 star and they find the right home for each horse that comes through their program. Their volunteer staff and interns are well trained to the needs of each horse. Without a doubt they are very transparent with the adopter that they work with and guarantee success for each placement.

I’m June 2017, I adopted Aggiornamentos. She has such a teddy bear personality and absolutely the sweetest mare. I cannot thank Nina and Sarah enough for all the helpful information and letting me bring her home. Everything went so smoothly and Nina answered all my questions even after I had brought her home. Also thank you Charlie, for the plaque of her name and shoes..such a memorable experience! Thank you again!

I can't say enough good things about this farm and their program. You will never meet a more knowledgeable, caring and dedicated group of horse people. And despite their extensive experience, they are always happy to take the time to educate those who might be new to horses.
Each of the horses coming through their program are thoroughly evaluated from a health and temperament perspective. They take the time to get to know each horse, training them at the pace the horse needs, taking into account the horse's heath and readiness. Based on the horse's natural talents, limitations, if any, and taking into account the horse's temperament, only then do they match the horse to potential adopters. They want to be sure the new home is a good match for both the horse and rider.
You also won't find a more honest, trustworthy group of people. They fully disclose the horse's known health history, share the details of the care and training they've provided, and are always available for follow up questions and needs.
How do I know all of this - we've known and worked with them for 3 years, the last 2 helping us train our 5 year old gelding. And my daughter just spent the summer volunteering with their program. You won't find a better place to find your future equine partner.

I have volunteered with Nina and Charlie since 2013 and I cannot say enough about the passion, dedication, and care they put into the rehabilitation and adoption of their OTTBs. TRRAC is a fantastic program that thrives on the welfare of its horses. Everyone involved works tirelessly to provide the best care for these horses as possible. The Lyman family take their time to provide their horses with any medical attention or beneficial down time they may need before training them for their new careers. After a thorough evaluation is conducted to determine the best placement into which the horse will happily and successfully thrive, Nina and Charlie work with potential adopters to match their needs with the perfect horse. With years of experience, they work with volunteers to safely and responsibly provide their horses with a variety of experiences. I've personally learned so much for them in the few short years I've been involved. I'm proud to be a part of the TRRAC mission and would highly recommend this program to anyone looking to find their next best friend!

I purchased Talk for Sate through a different party and with a little research found out where she had previously come from. I got in contact with them and Nina was very helpful in giving me tips about Satie and about her race career. I highly recommend them to anyone in the market for a thoroughbred. Nina is as honest as they come !

I adopted my horse, Tuxedo, from TRRAC. Nina was very responsive to my inquiries about him. When she brought him in, he was severely emaciated, but she had him on all the pricey medications and supplements to aid in his recovery. Only the best for her horses! Now, he is a beauty and a very honest and willing jumper. I couldn't be happier with his progress!

Once he was adopted, she told us she was so excited that she could now take in another horse she already had her eye on. There's no time wasted to help horses here!

Every thing that Nina and Charlie said about him was true. They have great customer service and are honest people. I had no issues at all during the adoption process. They even dropped him off for me. They were a pleasure to work with so I highly recommend to anyone looking!
