Nonprofit Overview
Causes: Gift Distribution, Human Services
Mission: Thorndale Cares was started in 1992 by Melvin Hirt. He gathered churches and some community members/leaders to help him get his idea rolling. Founding members included: Reverend & Mrs. Apple, Melvin Cast, Gary Williams, Willie Calvin, Susan Sekaquaptewa. In the early years, all the work was done by the churches and adult community leaders. But slowly over time, school organizations got involved and now most of manual work of lifting/filling boxes, and delivering has shift to student volunteers. Every year volunteers show up to organize and make Melvin's idea come to life all over again. And every year, Thorndale Cares brings hope, love, food, toys and some Christmas cheer to those less fortunate in the Thorndale area.
Results: Every year we help around 100 families with necessities, provide over 100 Christmas gifts for children, deliver care baskets to elderly, and provide food and meals for those in need in our community.

Geographic areas served: Thorndale, Texas
Programs: aid in the for of food, toiletries, and other necessities, gifts for children at Christmas time, Thanksgiving community meal, monetary donation in disasters, and delivering meals to elderly.
