Mission: Third Wave Foundation is a feminist, activist foundation that works nationally to support the vision and voices of young women, transgender and gender nonconforming youth ages 15 to 30. Our purpose is to support and strengthen these young activists and their allies who work for gender, racial, social, and economic justice. We accomplish this through a three-pronged strategy: Strategic grantmaking – supporting youth-led and focused organizations to build infrastructure, increase capacity, and launch multi-issue programs. Leadership development – nurturing a new generation of movement architects by convening and training activists who have traditionally been disenfranchised. Philanthropic advocacy – raising the awareness of other grantmakers and individual donors about issues and models that are often sidelined within social justice movements and the philanthropic community. Third Wave Foundation’s long term goals are to: Support young women, transgender and gender nonconforming youth and their organizations to create change in their communities; Ensure that young women, transgender and gender nonconforming youth have the skills, power and opportunity to engage in and lead efforts for social justice; Strengthen progressive movements by investing in the next generation of leadership; Help grow the women’s movement by supporting new and innovative approaches to pursuing gender, racial, social and economic justice; and Increase the amount and number of individuals and foundations giving to organizations led by young women, transgender and gender nonconforming youth.
Programs: The board members of third wave resolved to wind down operations and transfer its remaining assets to a partnering organization. This process was still on going in 2014.
