Mission: Community based professional theatre staging theatrical productions and offering actor training programs for youths and adults.
Programs: Chelsea theatre works: theatrezone opened it's new perfoming arts center in 2003, and continued in 2016 with its 13th full season on-site. The chelsea theatre works houses our 100 seat theatre, exhibition space for local artists, and serves as the aanchor to chelsea's proposed cultural district in historic chelsea square. In 2016 we opened 2 new theaters at the chelsea theatre works, a youth theater and a rental theater to provide a home for greater boston's small companies.
apollinaire play lab (formerly chelsea youth theatre): in 2016 we opened a new youth arts center, the riseman family theatre (rft) as the chelsea theatre works. The rft houses a class, studio, a fully equipped flexible theater/class studio, a teacher's office and reception area. The apollinaire play lab currenlty offeres production opportunities and 8-10 week acting, dance, singing, and art classes to students ages 5-18 from chelsea and surrounding communities. Tuition is minimal and subsidized for those in need. Students have also been involved with apollinaire theatre company productions as volunteers and as performers both during the regular season and in the park.
theatrical productions: since opening the chelsea theatre works in 2003, theatrezone dba apollinaire theatre company has produced over 50 plays, including pulitzer prize winning contemporary plays, a regional premier which we toured to the edinburgh fringe festival, and an original play, chelsea girl, created by a group of artists over just a 24 hour period, and about the life of our long time volunteer ida rudolph. We were nomintated for 3 elliot norton awards, outstanding production, outstanding actor, and outstanding director (winner) for our production of uncle vanya, and won the award for outstanding production in both 2015 and 2016
theatre in the park: our bilingual outdoor free summer theatre continues to be one our most important community programs. In 2016 we performed shakespeare's hamlet, in multiple locations in port park, including sets built from the adjacent salt piles. The apollinaire play lab performed an adaptaion in spanish. Actor training program: offers classes for adults in acting,improvisation and audition technique. This program brings new energy into the company and former students often become active volunteers both in production and fundraising capacities.
