Mission: The Washington Youth Choir (WYC) is a three day a week after school music education and college preparatory program for students ages 13 to 19. Targeted to DC high school students with little or no access to in-school arts programs and/or after school extracurricular activities, the WYC?s mission is to enhance the educational experience of DC-area youth with the rigorous study and performance of music and facilitate their transition out of high school. Through our two-part program, we inspire youth to lead happy, productive and meaningful lives.
Programs: The Washington Youth Choir is a unique program addressing critical gaps in DC arts and college preparatory programming while providing a safe and enriching after school learning environment for high school students. Students in our program rehearse after school three days a week and learn music theory, a diverse repertoire and complex vocal performance skills aligned with National Music Education Standards. We also provide students with a variety of performance and enrichment opportunities that develop both music skills and core values. Additionally, WYC members participate in college preparatory and career counseling activities on a weekly basis. This program component includes presentations by college counselors and guest speakers to facilitate our students? transition out of high school. Members are also exposed to colleges and universities and awarded scholarships upon graduation. The WYC?s ultimate goal is for 100% of our members to graduate from high school and to receive a postsecondary education.
