Mission: The Village of Arts and Humanities seeks to build community through its innovative arts, educational, social, construction, and economic development programs. In all of its projects and activities, The Village seeks to support justice to the humanity and social conditions of people who live in inner city North Philadelphia and in similar urban situations.
Target demographics: Serving a teen population, ages 13-19, living in the immediate North Philadelphia area, the Village recognizes the evident need for safe, constructive opportunities for local youth. Approximately 86% of the area’s households with children have incomes below the poverty line. As a result most families have few economic resources to invest in the education and social development of their children. Because only one-third of neighborhood adults over the age of 25 hold a high school diploma and less than 10% have post-secondary degrees, there are few local mentors who can help teens to develop the potential they have for educational and economic success. Programming at The Village of Arts and Humanities provides opportunities for youth who otherwise have little access to arts and cultural opportunities in the area.
Direct beneficiaries per year: The Village annually impacts approximately 7,000 youth and families, enlists the help of approximately 600 volunteers, and serves a 260-square block area of North Philadelphia.
Geographic areas served: North Philadelphia
Programs: The Village builds community through several arts-based programs and activities that work with residents to reclaim abandoned space and rebuild a sense of hope and possibility in their neighborhoods. The Learning through the Arts program focuses on afterschool, weekend, and summer arts enrichment classes for children ages 6-20, both for neighborhood children and visiting groups on- and off-site. Workshops are offered in visual and performing arts, media arts, urban gardening, and academic support. Village teens present an original theatrical production annually at the Painted Bride Art Center. The Building through the Arts program transforms blight into beauty through the creation of art parks and gardens on vacant sites. Additionally, the program cleans and maintains over 200 vacant lots in North Philadelphia through a contract with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. The Economic Development program seeks to develop the economic capacity of the organization and its surrounding community through job-training and community planning.
