Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Military & Veterans Organizations, Veterans

Mission: The Veteran Barn Door Project is a non profit who provides Horsemanship Clinics to Veterans to help heal the hidden wounds of war. PTSD and TBI's are hard to see in a Veteran and often result in suicide. Trust and balance is lost for some during war. We help return that lost trust and balance using our horses.

Results: We have had Veterans on the verge of suicide return to society and become successful in new careers or rise in their current career due to finding a new balance in life and trust in people they had lost during their battles with PTSD.

Target demographics: Veterans suffering with the hidden wounds of war

Direct beneficiaries per year: over 125 Veterans

Geographic areas served: Throughout the United States

Programs: Natural horsemanship clinics and introducing Veterans to horses as an alternative to medication

There's just something about working with the horses that makes you realize how much you carry with you constantly because they mimic your feelings and emotions. I absolutely loved this workshop, but I also had a difficult time because I carry so much with me that I can't seem to let go. Seeing that reflected in the horse was difficult for me, and was a very emotional event. But I needed it. Even though the workshop just ended yesterday I want more!! Thank you Steve for working and sharing with the Soldiers at the WTU here at Campbell. I hope you realize how much it means to us and how much we appreciate you and what you're doing.

The project was instrumental in helping me cope with anxiety. Instructors take a great deal of time to ensure everyone benefits from the program. Program would benefit more soldiers by incorporating it after deployments. PTSD, anxiety, and depression are a few issues the program helps with. I would recommend it to all veterans seeking help.

Do a very good job at helping people leave all the bad things in life at the door. I love how willing they were to help my 10yr old son feel like he’s a part of what the adults are doing. As for improving maybe they could offer one of the program during summer in order to make it easier to attend and let people know that boots are basically a requirement 🙂

VBDP is an amazing organization. The weekend was therapeutic, fun, and informative. Everyone involved was kind, welcoming and extremely talented in their particular field of expertise. The way that they help Veterans through horse work is incredible. Will be attending another clinic for sure in the future.

Very helpful in creating a bond and breaking away from current stresses. Relieved alot of stress and tension and building a relationship one on one with a horse is amazing. The instructors are incredible people and very understanding. Only wish is that they had more classes or were around more often. Otherwise perfect and wonderful.

The project is doing really well in helping military members come to ease with Thier problems. The class was very soothing and helps relaxing nerves. The only thing I would improve would maybe make it longer than 3 days.
