Mission: Our mission is to provide high quality legal representation to qualified individuals with federal tax controversies and to provide our students with practical skills training and an understanding of the importance of pro bono representation.
Programs: The Kansas City Tax Clinic is the project of the UMKC Graduate Tax Law Foundation. This program provides free, high quality legal representation to low-income individuals with IRS controversies. This program also trains a group of law students each semester, thus providing them with practical experience and an opportunity to develop client interview and advocacy skills. The clinic directors, each with over 30 years experience with tax controversy, provide direct instruction and also provide guidance to students as they work with clients. Our clients mainly live in the Kansas City Metropolitan area, although we do have some clients who live outside of the immediate metro area. It is common for low-income persons to find themselves in controversy with IRS and our organization is one of the only avenues available for them to obtain assistance without cost. We also occasionally assist taxpayers with state tax issues, if it is in addition to a federal problem.
