Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation does so many wonderful things to support music education programs throughout the country. The foundation’s support of local instrument drives to put instruments in the hands of youth who express a desire to play music has changed countless lives for the better. Music is the universal language, crossing socio-economic-racial borders and inequalities. The Spirit of Harmony Foundation tirelessly promotes music education with an uplifting message of love, generosity and hope. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this organization and the folks who drive its engine.
What can I say about the Spirit if Harmony Foundation (SOHF)? It’s an amazing organization run by people who are devoted to the mission of music advocacy. The SOHF supporters are from all over the world and their passion knows no bounds. The message is in the music!
The Spirit of Harmony Foundation is very near and dear to my heart. The music advocacy that the foundation provides is critical to the education and well-being of children. The Board and its Founder, Todd Rundgren, are dedicated and passionate about sharing the groups mission. By engaging volunteers from Todd' s devoted fan base, the foundation has been able to spread their message far and wide. One of the greatest programs is the musical instrument drives. The drives allow for much-needed instruments to get into the hands of children who otherwise might never have the chance to experience the joy of learning/playing music, as well as enriching their lives. Music and love is the answer!
I was speaking with some neighbors who were very concerned about filling the days of their kids during the COVID-19 school and activity closures. As a long-time Todd fan, I checked in on the website of Todd's Spirit of Harmony Foundation to see whether they offered any ideas for making sure kids have music education during this time. I found an incredibly helpful resource page (https://spiritofharmony.org/program-spotlight/) that I was able to share with my friends.
Between the website and their social media posts, the Spirit of Harmony seems to always be at the forefront of music education advocacy. They keep things positive and practical, always thinking of ways to make sure music is part of kids' lives.
I've been a fan of Todd Rundgren for decades, and recently discovered his music education advocacy foundation. They had an information table set up in the lobby at a Todd concert I was attending. It was so impressive to see such fun and enthusiastic volunteers, and they even had a display spotlighting a local music program!
As anyone who loves Todd's music would expect from his own foundation, the Spirit of Harmony is unique. I appreciate the fact that they don't focus on themselves, but focus on mobilizing people to get involved with supporting music programs for kids in their own communities.
Their name comes from the lyrics of one of my favorite Utopia songs, Singring and the Glass Guitar. "... Now in possession of all four keys, the brave adventurers march triumphantly into the valley of silence to open the chest, smash the glass guitar, and free the spirit of Harmony." Cool!
I have supported The Spirit of Harmony Foundation for several years now, because of the work that they do in promoting music education for young people. I have seen firsthand how music education benefits children in other areas beyond music and am thankful there is an organization that is advocating for music education as part of the educational experience for children.
The Spirit Of Harmony Foundation is a magical combination of music and love in action. Todd, the board, volunteers, and supporters infuse the present and seed the future with a joyful sound. I have benefited personally in perhaps an unusual way. Like all families, ours has had a time of difficulty. Reading about SOHF partnerships and events, seeing videos of kids, teachers, and communities lifted up by music has helped to keep my heart open. The board is very focused on the imperative of music education, but it is done in a true spirit of harmony with opportunity to contribute on many levels in creative, fun ways.
The Spirit of Harmony Foundation is "love in action." I have witnessed their work firsthand, such as when they distributed musical instruments to children at the local homeless shelter and helped teach them to play the ukulele. They bring music and instruments into the lives of everyone and highlight the importance of music education as the key to better, more fulfilling, more hopeful, more empathetic lives.
SOHF is a stellar advocate of music education for children. Their promotion of research, programs and artists in the field has increased exposure and support for these programs including my own, Creative Concepts in Music. I worked w SOHF staff on Todd Rundgren’s Kennedy Center for the Arts residency at the U of Notre Dame in 2016 to present my original teaching songs for a school and school district staff. I was grateful to experience two of Todd’s presentations to students at the University that truly inspired anyone with an interest in music, creativity, stage production and the value of following your true path. It was an amazing experience to see how well SOFH staff connected with all of the many people involved in this beautiful experience in music education. A superb staff, mission and organization.
Outside of totally supporting and believing in the message of Spirit of Harmony, my main focus has been on creating instrument drives to provide instruments to the children's programs who rely on help from donations and volunteers to help them realize their dreams. After 4 years of striving to bring music education within my community via this foundation, they have always been 100% supportive by communicating with us immediately with advice, sending us promotional media to provide to the public and shouting out about our instrument drives in real time. This foundation's directors and supporters go above and beyond to prove that the moral imperative of music education is real and absolutely necessary. The passion is invaluable and inspirational.
I join with the Spirit of Harmony as a volunteer to advocate for the moral imperative of music education for children at the earliest age possible and to keep the music programs alive in schools. We have done several instrument drives and the musical instruments have been donated to needy music programs and handed to children across the US. The experience and meaning is exceptional and warms the heart. The board members and leaders are truly passionate about the cause. We hope more and more people will support this wonderful foundation.
My son is 20 and has aspergers/autism.
He has an absolute passion for music and art!
Thank you for you never ending support for exposure to all of this!
As a child in elementary and high school, I was always exposed to music. I played violin in elementary school, and sang in elementary and high school chorus. I feel blessed to have had this experience. I am saddened to know that times have changed. My grandson doesn’t have the same opportunities that I had. It is my honor and pleasure to support the Spirit of Harmony Foundation. What a wonderful organization to get instruments and music in the hands and minds of our next generation!! I will continue to support the efforts of this amazing foundation!!
Todd Rundgren has long believed that music education is a crucial component of childhood development. Studies show children who play instruments or who are otherwise exposed to music, perform better in school. With that in mind, Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation plays matchmaker—pairing those in need of musical instruments and/or mentorship with those who can fulfill those needs.
Music education opens doors a child may never have known existed. The SOHF provides opportunities for them to walk through those doors and discover an expanded view of themselves, their community, and the world.
“Music is the divine way to tell beautiful, poetic things to the heart.” – Pablo Casals
When you combine an important directive with an engaged board and passionate supporters, you can expect the best in a not for profit foundation, and Spirit of Harmony Foundation delivers as an advocate for the moral imperative of music education.
I want to give a shout out to all the good people at Todd Rundgren’s SOHF including President Todd. (*not to get political but that has a nice ring to it)
I have followed & supported SOFH since I found out about it 4ish years ago.
Iam happy & proud to be able to do anything I can to help. I know how vital music is for babies & children. From the fact that they listen to it in the womb, to singing & ‘banging on the drum’ being so important very early on. It only makes sense that music is crucial & it is something that TRuly brings us together.
There are so many studies & scientific proof of what music does for our brains not to mention our mental & emotional well being.
Todd has known all this for a very long time & really wants to share the experience & make it possible for all children to be able to have exposure to musical instruments, the opportunity to take lessons consistently for an extended amount of time & to have the joy that comes from it.
Please take a look at their website. There are many areas where we can be involved. Its fun & gratifying. Kim
I am honored to serve as a board member for this small but mighty effort to promote early childhood music education. Emerging from Todd Rundgren's fans and their desire to do more for children music education, SOHF strives to impact the lives of children locally while participating in larger national networks that support music education. Here in NE Ohio, SOHF supports several local music efforts, including EN-RICH-MENT in Canton , Ohio, where children from disadvantaged backgrounds are provided a rich musical education through performance, dance, and instruction.
As a relatively new fan of musician Todd Rundgren, I found out about his Spirit of Harmony Foundation when a call was put out to fans to volunteer in social media and blog writing. In the past four years, I have helped spread the word about the foundation's music education advocacy by writing blog entries, a Volunteer Spotlight series, editing a quarterly newsletter, contributing to social media postings and helping at a homeless shelter in South Bend, Indiana, where Todd handed out ukuleles to children to begin a music program there. Most recently, I helped staff a foundation information table at Todd Rundgren's 'The Individualist' concerts. This is just a small sampling of the connections created and fostered by the Spirit of Harmony Foundation. The foundation strives to pair schools in need of musical instruments or music programs with community organizations equipped to fulfill those needs. Music changes lives and the foundation helps nurture that ideal by proactively working to get musical instruments into the hands of children from the earliest age possible. It is truly, as the Todd Rundgren song lyric states, 'Love in Action.'
I have had the opportunity to be a volunteer for the Spirit of Harmony Foundation on a number of occasions and I always moved by stories people tell about their experiences with music. At used instrument drives, donors are very happy to know that their cherished instruments will be receiving a new life, giving children the opportunity of music education. With the objective of advocating for music education for all children, the Spirit of Harmony Foundation is an organization that embodies the belief that “Music Education is a Moral Imperative. “
I have been an activist for the Spirit of Harmony Foundation for a number of years. As a fan of it’s originator,Todd Rundgren,I knew it must be outstanding. The benefits of music, while well known, continue to be cut by inadequate funds. Mr. Rundgren’s dream is to continue to give all children the chance to be a part of music’s legacy. He chose carefully who might enable this fight of music for children everywhere. With the help of,Jean Lachowicz, his dream is coming true! The results continue to show it’s growth and importance. My heart over flows with pride to be a part of such a worthwhile organization!
We first learned about Todd Rundgren's Spirit of Harmony Foundation five years ago when we were looking for music education non-profits to donate proceeds from our "88+ Ways Music Can Change Your Life" book series. Though they were a fairly young organization at the time, we loved their mission and how they were working to grow their advocacy efforts. Ultimately we chose Spirit of Harmony to be one of the organizations "88+ Ways Music" would support and 5 years later we're still thrilled with that decision. Jean and Ed's efforts along with Todd's guidance and marque name are helping to connect music programs in need with needed resources all over the United States. Their efforts are helping thousands of children receive music education who otherwise might not.
The concept of music education should be a no-brainer. The overwhelming developmental benefits of music in ALL groups of individuals is clear and concise. Todd Rundgren’s Spirit Of Harmony Foundation, through all of its management, staff and supporters, helps make this happen!
Doing excellent work keeping music education alive in the public school system. Working diligently on collecting & distributing used band instruments. All inspired by fans of Todd Rundgren gathering and donating 10K to a New Orleans public school band program. Great non-profit that deserves recognition!
The Spirit of Harmony has given fans a true opportunity to take the deeper meaning of Todd Rundgren's libretto and put into true action, "Love In Action", as the song states. His global community, in a variety of ways, has advocated for music education for children, raised funds and collected musical instruments for children who would otherwise not have the opportunity to play and perform.
As a board member and one of its founders, the work of this foundation has inspired me in ways I never considered in my life. From organizing instrument drives, to working with music education programs across the country and producing concerts helping to shine a light on this much needed educational opportunity.
The last 6 years have been richly rewarding and I look forward to continuing our work far into the future. As stated in another Todd lyric... "There's always more."
