Despite the fact that science consistently provides solid data stressing the numerous benefits of music education for our youth, music education and musical programs continue to be on the chopping block within school curriculums. It’s unfortunate that there is even a need for an organization like the Spirit of Harmony Foundation to promote music advocacy, but thank goodness this wonderful national grass roots organization exists! SOHF’s dedicated leadership, starting with its visionary founder, Todd Rundgren, is driven by the desire to educate children – many of whom might never be exposed to music and instruments – and harness the passion of others to further its mission. SOHF’s leadership, volunteers, community partners and donors truly understand that the impact of music education NEVER ends, but is actually LIFELONG and often times life changing!
Since it’s inception over a decade ago, the Spirit of Harmony Foundation has championed the imperative of music education and performance for children, forging partnerships with other non-profits, engaging supporters, and providing opportunities for personal development and self-expression through music.

I admire that Spirit of Harmony Foundation continues to advocate for music education of children in ways that help educators adjust to the changing realities of music education. Recent efforts include finding a role for electronic music that supprts traditional instrument based music education.
Music education for children and young people is integral to their intellectual, emotional, and social growth. Not all children have the opportunity to access it, including not having the financial means for instruments, programs, etc.
Since this foundation's inception, I have been elated that it exists and is helping as much as possible with this situation, as well as educating the public about how music expands the mind in a very literal way.

I don't know who I would be without the love of music and respect for music education especially for children at the youngest age possible. I was not fortunate enough to have music lessons when I was very young but have always found that music has brought me through times in my life that nothing else could do for me. I taught myself how to play the guitar and find that it is a therapeutic soothing experience and a mental stress reducer and helps me to feel happier, especially being a disabled person who is pretty much homebound. Todd Rundgren and his amazing leaders with the Spirit of Harmony Foundation are spot on to embrace the importance of music to the brain which helps in many ways. They continually go over and above to help spread the word and help to provide instruments to needy children programs all over the USA. My wife has been an avid supporter and volunteer for SOHF over many years and I have learned through her commitment to being an advocate of music education, hosting instruments drive, just how beautiful and very important this foundation is. I support SOHF and have great respect for the individuals who are manning the helm as they are of the utmost professional and big hearted people and have chosen a most rewarding challenge to keep the music alive.

This is a great organization that focuses on musical education for children and inspires others to work locally on promoting children's musical education. Being Todd Rundgren fans, my husband and I got involved as volunteers for Spirit of Harmony a few years ago, as we believe that music education is of utmost importance in our society but unfortunately our schools are putting less and less focus on this important piece of children's education. Our volunteer work with SOFH has inspired us, along with a friend, to create our own nonprofit to do instrument drives. Which shows that SOFH really lives up to, and evokes passion to, its mission. Whenever I'm attending a Todd Rundgren concert, I always try to make a beeline to the Spirit of Harmony information table because I love interacting with their volunteers who are as passionate about music eduation as I am. I also love picking up their swag and information cards. It seems like music programs are being cut from more schools every year, and an organization like the Spirit of Harmony brings this important youth development activity to the forefront.

I am a music teacher in a Title 1 school. We have very few resources, but our community has a deep love for music, so we make our music program work as best we can. Thanks to the Spirit of Harmony's Advocacy Toolkit, I am able to rattle off the reasons why my school needs to keep music in its budget, and the reasons why our parents need to support their children as they learn music. I love when the Spirit of Harmony says "the moral imperative of music education." It certainly IS a moral imperative!
The Spirit of Harmony is a great, small foundation that advocates for the moral imperative of Music Education. They engage and encourage their supporters to participate in their communities, helping in anyway they are able to support these vital services.
They also participate in direct service by initiating used instrument drives, that once refurbished are donated to programs and kids who may not other wise have an opportunity to participate and acquire all the life skills they learn by playing music.

Todd Rundgren's Spirit of Harmony continues to make strides, advocating for music education for children nationwide. Spring from Todd's fan base, now reaching out to a broader swath of music lovers, most recently to the fans of David Bowie during the 2022 "Celebrating David Bowie" national tour.
While traditional instrument based eduction has been at the core of the Foundation's mission, it continues to evolve and expand. Recently the Foundation has embraced and advocated for Electronic music education or "Sound Arts", as a means to capture the interest of a larger pool of students.
The Foundation is even exploring 3D printing as a means to provide inexpensive instruments to under served communities that would not otherwise have access.
I am proud to continue to support Todd and his Foundation's efforts.

Thanks to Todd Rundgren's Spirit of Harmony Foundation, I've been able to connect with several schools in my neighborhood in Los Angeles. I am not a parent, but I'm now on the schools' email lists and I get notices about their concerts and events, and I am able to participate in their fundraisers. It's really wonderful to support music education in my own community. Becoming a Spirit of Harmony volunteer has provided me with a way to "give back" to music for a lifetime of joy.
What began as a volunteer effort by fans of musician Todd Rundgren grew into a formal advocacy for early music education in our schools. Jean Lachowicz and Ed Vigdor have done a superlative job turning SOHF into a vital force that music educators have been able to turn to whether for instrument exchange, direct support, as well as a strong public voice for the science of music practices on young minds. With vital linkages across the community of music education, Spirit of Harmony has become a force to be reckoned with.
I have had the opportunity to work with and volunteer for the SOHF on multiple occasions. Not only is their mission a critical one, as a teacher I have seen firsthand the positive impact a music program has on a student. The groups leaders are dedicated, and just really wonderful people to work with-they live the mission and provide a positive environment for everyone.
I was raised with music in public schools. Our high school had a chorus, a choir, band, band, orchestra, and a jazz ensemble. We produced a musical every year. We learned to read music, play as a team, improvisation and self soothing.
You can feel one way and by playing, singing or even listening to music, you can feel another way, usually better. Music has its own kind of magic.
As adults, almost 50 years later, music continues to be part of our lives.

I have been fortunate enough in my life to be associated with some truly great musicians. My life has been so much richer from the people and experiences I’ve had through music. It is truly a great honor to be able to give back to others, something from which I have gained so much joy. Assisting a Foundation, that promotes music education as a lifelong pursuit, is a worthy activity. The benefits of music education extend far outside of the world of music. I was fortunate enough to be at the founding event in New Orleans for the Spirit of Harmony Foundation. It was truly an inspirational event. I have been volunteer at the information table for Spirit of Harmony at many subsequent events.
Back in 2013, something big began. It started out as an idea, then the action part kicked in. I'm writing about the formation of SOHF, rooted in the generosity of others. This idea and action created an even bigger reaction. Who would have thought that, what seemed like a "fun thing to do", would have such an amazing impact? A "fun thing to do" is really an understatement! From what seemed like a simple (not so simple) idea of providing musical instruments to school kids, SOHF grew into an organization dedicated to spreading the word about the importance of music education. Seriously, who does that? Todd Rundgren does that! Todd doesn't act alone in this endeavor. Behind Todd is an amazing roundtable of individuals who work diligently to recognize and educate others about the importance of music education in schools everywhere. For 10 years, SOHF has inspired me to share the benefits of music education in young people. I never knew just how much influence music in an educational setting improved a students learning abilities. Music education is vital to a student's personal growth, not only academically but socially, economically, and cognitively. While music education programs are often the first programs to be eliminated, they're an integral part of a young person's personal growth. SOHF has continued to provide resources to music educators so that music education can remain in schools. SOHF also encourages those outside of the educational system to support music in schools through advocacy. Information shared, is knowledge gained. SOHF, its' founder, its' board members, its' volunteers, financial supporters, and recipients of support on so many levels, benefit universally. As a relatively new fan of musician Todd Rundgren, I found out about his Spirit of Harmony Foundation when a call was put out to fans to volunteer in social media and blog writing. In the past four years, I have helped spread the word about the foundation's music education advocacy by writing blog entries, a Volunteer Spotlight series, editing a quarterly newsletter, contributing to social media postings and helping at a homeless shelter in South Bend, Indiana, where Todd handed out ukuleles to children to begin a music program there. Most recently, I helped staff a foundation information table at Todd Rundgren's 'The Individualist' concerts. This is just a small sampling of the connections created and fostered by the Spirit of Harmony Foundation. The foundation strives to pair schools in need of musical instruments or music programs with community organizations equipped to fulfill those needs. Music changes lives and the foundation helps nurture that ideal by proactively working to get musical instruments into the hands of children from the earliest age possible. I'm on the board of a non-profit that provides music education and other musical opportunities to underserved areas of Baltimore and Washington, DC. We started a non-formal relationship with Spirit of Harmony about 6 months ago. They have been extremely helpful in provided advice and lessons learned from their experiences to assist us in our mission. All the people we've worked with from SOH have been open, encouraging and supportive in all the interactions we've had. As both an arts educator and follower of Todd Rundgren for decades, the Spirit of Harmony Foundation was a perfect fit for where I wanted to donate my time and money. Nothing can compare to music in the way that it opens doors to learning. To deny a kid the opportunity to play an instrument is like taking away books. No child should be denied this right because of lack of access. I've seen firsthand from being a Band Parent for 8 years the joy, creativity, cooperation, and discipline that music can bring into everyone's lives.

As a former private music instructor myself, here in Todd Rundgren's hometown of Philadelphia, the majority of my students were between the ages of six to eighteen years old, so the emphasis of The Spirit Of Harmony Foundation on early education of music is what I find to be the most important aspect of the foundations impact as a nonprofit. I can't emphasize enough the importance of music education and advocacy in our schools and private learning institutions that focus on music education, especially in these times of budget cuts and general loss of government funding.
The Spirit Of Harmony Foundation is an essential destination for anyone who views music education and advocacy for music education to donate funds, musical instruments or to volunteer their time, all for such an important cause. This organization is very close to my heart. Keeping Music education in schools is of utmost importance since not all students are motivated nor able to attend college. Students should be encouraged to explore their love of music and can’t always afford instruments or private lessons. Music brings joy to everyone.

I grew up in the 60’s and 70’s. Music class was mandatory. You could either sing or play an instrument. I had to do chorus because my mother could not afford the “fee” for the instrument. I sang my heart out, and was actually pretty good, but I so deeply wanted to learn how to play the piano. Spirit of Harmony Foundation is working on bringing music back into the education system.
experience has been limited bit I continue to see the effort put in by its' members and other volunteers. I know that each board member is responsible in executing the mission behind SOHF and will continue to fulfill its desired goals.

I attended a symposium (sponsored by Spirit of Harmony Foundation) because I was a fan of Todd's Rundgren's music. A scientific presentation demonstrated how music education gives young children much more than the ability to play an instrument. It improves their overall performance in school. I always thought music was mind-expanding. It turns out that it is. I became a donor, and then a volunteer, and now a board member. By providing underserved kids with music education, we are not just giving them a hobby. We are giving them a chance to make more of their overall education.
The Spirit of Harmony works hard to support music programs in schools. In times when they are cutting the arts, it’s important to remember that the benefits extend far into other subjects such as math and science.

I have benefited personally in perhaps an unusual way. Like all families, ours has had a time of difficulty. Reading about SOHF partnerships and events, seeing videos of kids, teachers, and communities lifted up by music has helped to keep my heart open. I have witnessed their work firsthand, such as when they distributed musical instruments to children at the local homeless shelter and helped teach them to play the ukulele. SOHF is a stellar advocate of music education for children. Their promotion of research, programs and artists in the field has increased exposure and support for these programs including my own, Creative Concepts in Music. I worked w SOHF staff on Todd Rundgren’s Kennedy Center for the Arts residency at the U of Notre Dame in 2016 to present my original teaching songs for a school and school district staff. I was grateful to experience two of Todd’s presentations to students at the University that truly inspired anyone with an interest in music, creativity, stage production and the value of following your true path. It was an amazing experience to see how well SOFH staff connected with all of the many people involved in this beautiful experience in music education. A superb staff, mission and organization.
Outside of totally supporting and believing in the message of Spirit of Harmony, my main focus has been on creating instrument drives to provide instruments to the children's programs who rely on help from donations and volunteers to help them realize their dreams. After 4 years of striving to bring music education within my community via this foundation, they have always been 100% supportive by communicating with us immediately with advice, sending us promotional media to provide to the public and shouting out about our instrument drives in real time. This foundation's directors and supporters go above and beyond to prove that the moral imperative of music education is real and absolutely necessary. The passion is invaluable and inspirational.

We have done several instrument drives and the musical instruments have been donated to needy music programs and handed to children across the US. As a child in elementary and high school, I was always exposed to music. I played violin in elementary school, and sang in elementary and high school chorus. I feel blessed to have had this experience. I am saddened to know that times have changed. My grandson doesn’t have the same opportunities that I had. I know how vital music is for babies & children.From the fact that they listen to it in the womb, to singing & ‘banging on the drum’ being so important very early on. We first learned about Todd Rundgren's Spirit of Harmony Foundation five years ago when we were looking for music education non-profits to donate proceeds from our "88+ Ways Music Can Change Your Life" book series. Though they were a fairly young organization at the time, we loved their mission and how they were working to grow their advocacy efforts. Ultimately we chose Spirit of Harmony to be one of the organizations "88+ Ways Music" would support and 5 years later we're still thrilled with that decision.
