Mission: To end homelessness for adult women in king county by providing shelter, life skills training, social services and supportive permanent housing, offering a path from homelessness to stable independent living.
Programs: Sophia's place is a staffed programmatic overnight shelter serving women on the eastside. Open from 6:45pm to 7:45am every night of the year, it provides a hot dinner and breakfast, hygiene center, laundry facilities, computers, telephone, and a safe place to stay featuring private cubicles, locking closets for personal belonging, life skills classes and companion program. With 21 beds and stays of up to six months, sophia's place served 67 clients in 2016 with 47 women exiting the program during the year and 21 in the program at year end. The program provided a total of 7,296 bed nights in 2016.
sophia's home provides secure transitional and permanent housing for up to 37 women at a time who have completed the sophia's place program. We place clients in stable, subsidized apartments or community housing. Clients pay 30% of their income for rent (and utilities, if appropriate), and the sophia way provides the remainder of the rent with subsidies from king county, king county housing authority, and private donations. With support from united way of king county and king county, we continue providing case management services and referrals to a multitude of social services. We believe this relationship is an important key to a successful transition to independence and we aim to provide a robust on-going support system. In 2016 we served 42 clients with transitional and permanent housing.
eastside emergency winter shelter - in 2016 we also operated the eastside emergency winter shelter for women and families with children providing an immediate, low-barrier, emergency shelter from 8:30pm-7:30am every night. The emergency shelter includes a hot dinner, breakfast, floor mats and blankets for sleeping, access to shower facilities, and referrals for outside resources. We served 432 clients during the 2016-2017 winter season from october 2016 - may 2017.
