I'm so impressed by The Small Things' work. I've volunteered and worked for many non-profits around the world and TST's dedication to getting kids back home with their families is unmatched. I also love how nearly all of their staff (and especially those working directly with the community) are skilled Tanzanians, and how their residential care is evidence-based with a focus on best practice.

Causes: Family Counseling, Homes for Children & Adolescents, International, International Development, Job Training
Mission: We believe all children deserve homes and families – poverty alone is never an acceptable reason for a child to be in an orphanage. The Small Things (TST) aims to create alternatives to traditional orphanages for vulnerable children, by supporting struggling families, empowering caregivers and communities, and serving as an advocate for transition to a family-first model with options for residential care as a last resort.
Results: Over the past 10 years, TST has helped 57 families caring for 178 children stay together and thrive by creating stability. Our nearly 45 full-time staff have raised family reunification rates for children from less than 10% in 2013, to more than 50% today. As of 2021, 50% of children entering TST’s residential care program are returned home by age 5, and 80% are reunified by the time they reach secondary school. In addition, TST has supported more than 1,300 community members through education, microfinance, and business development programs. Through our programs, TST has supported approximately 1,600 beneficiaries to date.
