There are so many rescues for cats and dogs, which live, on average, 15 years. On the other hand, there are very few rescues dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of neglected, abused, and abandoned parrots, many of which have a lifespan of greater than 60 years. Rescues are at capacity all across the US. Because of this, SBBS's mission is to educate potential adopters (and the community at large) about the special intellectual, emotional and dietary needs parrots have in order to thrive. Individuals and families who wish to adopt are screened very carefully and SBBS requires them to meet certain standards of knowledge before a bird leaves the sanctuary. The facility also houses birds with "three strikes" (unsuccessful adoption times three) in perpetuity so they live out their lives in safety and loving care. The sanctuary was featured on the PBS documentary series, Nature's "Parrot Confidential". Greater than 90% of donated monies go directly to bird care and the Skylar Learning Center on the premises. I have been a member-at-large on the board of directors since 2011 and believe wholeheartedly in the amazing work the sanctuary does for these often misunderstood creatures.
