Programs: 1. Parks Education and Programs - In 2003, the Conservancy continued its Landscape Exploration program to teach middle school students that parks are products of human design. The program also includes a focus on the environmental and ecological issues affecting urban parks in both the classroom and park setting. 2. Parks Management & Maintenance - The Conservancy established a Parks Management & Maintenance department in 2003. This department supervises maintenance of the Conservancy's Capital Projects sites, assists in the planning and development and will also assist city crews and park volunteers in upgrading their parks maintenance skills. 3. Park Planning - In 2003, the parks planning efforts of the Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy concentrated primarily on the planning for the establishment of a vibrant public space for the Oakland community through the Schenley Plaza Project. This project was successfully opened in June of 2006. The Conservancy is the fiscal agent for the project. 4. Capital Projects - The Conservancy had in prior years identified four "Showcase Projects" (one in each of the four parks) as pilot projects to kick off its efforts. Two of the four "Showcase Projects" (The Frick Gatehouse restoration, and the restoration of the Schenley Park Visitor Center) were completed in prior years. In 2005, the third of these four projects, The Highland Park Entry Garden project was completed. In 2006 the Schenley Plaza Project was opened. Currently in 2007, the restoration process for the Riverview Chapel Shelter and surrounding land is under way. Another additional Highland Park Captial project, "The Babbling Brook" (behind the new micro-filtration water treatment plant in the park) was substantially completed in 2003.
