I had the opportunity to work with The Geek Group for the Summer of 2018. In my time I got to see a great drive and passion among the staff and volunteers I don't think I have ever seen in an organization before. The pure energy to get things done and help others is nothing short of astounding.
I got to see a variety of their programs and I can see a thread of providing access to resources for people, and a lot of self-driven development. I experienced this myself as I got to use some of the equipment in the HQ, but also got to learn as I did my tasks. I never saw a mundane routine; every day was filled with its own exciting opportunities to learn and grow. I got to see people who had never heard of the organization come in and leave with a fire to come and create things. I got to see people beaming with pride as they overcame an obstacle to their project. I got to see children get excited over science and technology. I got to see families being provided with access to computers they would not have had otherwise. I got to see the HQ simply being open for people to take shelter during a large heat wave. I can see that they live to serve in the ways they can, and there are some incredibly creative ways I see communities locally and beyond being served through this organization. I highly recommend connecting with The Geek Group, if you're looking for a unique volunteer experience I recommend this group, and if you're a potential client to their services I would recommend it.
Its truly a unique place that is just filled to the brim with passion.
TGG is a wonderful organization focused on helping people become better versions of themselves by providing a space where learning and exploration can take place at a personalized pace, and in a personalized manner.
In between directing and assisting in learning efforts of members, they also care for their local community by providing a safe place to weather storms, a community center to gather for activities, and a computer recycling effort that's trying to get ultra low cost computers into the hands of local community members.
